Description
South Manchester, CT: Cheney Brothers, 1906. Good. First edition presumed, n. d. (ca 1906); 17 x 12 1/2; large, heavy, card stock portfolio (the two boards separated), printed in black; eight wall charts on heavy card stock, illustrated with photographs, drawings, and silk samples; seven of them with a string to upper margin for hanging; boards with scuffing to edges and some age-toning and spotting; charts with a bit of rubbing and wear to edges and corners; two of the charts missing two swatches of fabric each; overall in good to very good condition. The Cheney brothers of Manchester - Ward, Frank, and Rush - began their career by investing in cultivating the notoriously-difficult to grow mulberry trees, the food source of the silkworm, in 1833. Quickly realizing that the project would be a failure and that the money lay in processing, rather than in raw production, the brothers partnered with their other brother Ralph and another investor and opened the Mt. Nebo Silk Mills in 1838, which would be renamed the Cheney Brothers Silk Manufacturing Company in 1854. By the time the second Industrial Revolution rolled in in the 1860s, the Cheney business was well on its way to becoming the largest silk manufacturer in the United States and the only company to manage all phases of silk production, but the actual raising of silkworms. Instead, they imported silk cocoons from Asia. The Cheney brothers were not only businessmen, but also inventors (their patented Rixford Roller would revolutionize the silk manufacturing process), investors (an employee of theirs and an ex-Colt firearms employee, Christopher Spencer, would invent and patent his revolutionary Spencer Gun in 1860, with the Cheneys' backing, in their own factory), philanthropists (they would build numerous community centers, schools, hospitals, a railroad, etc.), and generous employers (providing free, on-site, modern accomodations for the workers and their families). Unfortunately, the Great Depression and later, during WWII, the ushering of synthetic fabrics, would spell the demise of the company, which would ultimately be bought and dismantled by the J.P. Stevens and Co. of New York in 1955. The current educational charts, lavish and well-executed, showed the cultivated stages of silk, including actual cocoons and frisons, and provided numerous samples ( over 30 ) of silk ropes and raw-silk threads, and pile, gown, necktie, upholstery, and decorative silk fabrics.

Description
Orinda, California: Donna Day Westerman, N.D.. Limited and Signed Edition. Stiff wraps. Fine. Westerman, Donna Day. No. 13 of 20 (book edition; there are another 20 in a fine print edition), tall, thin quarto size, single wood engraving on four folded leaves, signed by the artist. Donna Day Westerman is a printmaker, painter and book artist in the Bay Area of California. [She is] "interested in traditional and historical media — particularly, woodcuts, wood-engravings and egg tempera — used in a contemporary manner. Working from close observation, and occasionally referring to [her] own photographs, [she] conceptually reduce[s] realistic nature to calligraphic or glyph-like notations. A kind of erasure takes place as the visual abundance... is distilled into the essence of the place. Other senses, such as sound and touch often inform the visual... A challenge... has been to capture the powerful ephemeral forms of fog and water in the hard-edged medium of wood... the medium itself determines much of the outcome." (n. b., "Artist's Statement" from the web site of the artist.) The present volume is inspired by a whale skeleton found on Lummi Island, Washington. ___DESCRIPTION: Original handmade paper covered boards heightened in foils, deckled edges, printed title strip laid onto upper board, printed label with author's name inlaid to lower board, backstrip opens so the accordion style format can be displayed in a connected elongated format, single-panel wood engraving printed in black 4" by 20", Optima type, Arches 88 paper, 12"by 4" when closed, five folded leaves including title page and colophon, limited edition, number 13 of 20, signed by Donna Day Westerman. ___CONDITION: A fine copy, no flaws to the paper covers, leaves are bright, rich impression, a fine copy signed and numbered by Donna Day Westerman; acquired by us directly from the Artist, new. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell. Although it is part of a series, this book is a stand-alone; it is also in a lovely custom binding, as it was probably issued in the original wraps. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter red leather with marbled paper boards in red with flecks of gilt, the spine with five raised bands, five gilt illustrations of the Star of David, and gilt lettering, top edge gilt, red marbled endpapers, title page with publisher's device in black, various tables and maps in black throughout, three fold-out maps and one fold-out topographical chart, some in black and white and some in colour; quarto size (10" by 6.75"), pagination: [i-vii] viii-ix [x] 1-380. J. O."; even with its few flaws, still a lovely work.    ___POSTAGE:  International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. ABC Television. No binding. Near Fine. [New York: ABC-TV, 1974-75]. Set of six vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) and 7 x 9" (18 x 23 cm) black-and-white photos. Most have affixed descriptive text, overall near fine. Set in a middle-class African American neighborhood in Washington, D.C., That's My Mama revolved around the character Clifton Curtis (played by Clifton Davis), a man in his mid-20s who worked as a barber at Oscar's Barber Shop, the family barber shop he inherited from his late father. While Clifton enjoyed being a bachelor, his loving but tart-tongued and opinionated mother Eloise "Mama" Curtis, played by Theresa Merritt, wanted him to settle down and find a nice wife. Additional characters such as Clifton's two best friends -- Earl, played by Teddy Wilson, an easy-going mailman and Junior, played by Ted Lange, a suave and good-humored ladies' man -- came and went over the course of a typical day at Oscar's Barber Shop.
