Description
1788. FRENCH CALLIGRAPHIC MANUSCRIPT. Recueil de Chansons et Romances. [4], 108 pp. Square 8vo., 178 x 137 mm, bound in contemporary French red morocco, spine richly decorated with gilt-tooled lyres and floral ornaments in alternating spine compartments, French filet borders on covers, blue silk endpapers and flyleaves, a.e.g. Paris: 1788. A Superb Calligraphic Manuscript; a masterpiece of eighteenth-century creative text and image. The manuscript is completely written and drawn in black ink on thick papier vergé by a French calligrapher of the Ancien Régime. The pages of this manuscript contain one image per page, each being an incorporation of words and ornament to create a morphological composition. For example, there appears on page 4 a verse "A Eleonore" where each couplet forms the solid part of a cloverleaf, as a symbol of luck to Eleonore; page 22 is a short verse on the body and soul, set inside a shaped heart composed of a triple floral border; on page 51 one finds a pair of eye-glasses (Les Lunettes) with four couplets of verse in each lens on the subject of seeing matters of life clearly; several pages contain songs with the border ornamentation comprised of musical staves and notes, while the lyrics can be found in the center ornaments. A number of the morphological compositions are shaped into pieces of jewelry, flowers, trees, snowflakes, or furniture (page 50 shows a couplet of verse inside of a table mirror composed of flowers). The remainder of the pages offer compositions which are purely ornamental in nature, with text and image creating geometric lozenges, circles or a coalescence of circles, partitioned quadrangles, floral rectangles, etc., all of them ornamented with flowers and garlands of a most delicate and exquisite design. The manuscript is absolutely complete, executed by an exceptional, artistic calligraphic hand. The volume is preserved in a contemporary French red morocco binding in very fine condition.

During this period, Vance played a key role in overseeing the U.S. military's involvement in the Vietnam War, though he privately expressed reservations, and eventually resigned from his post. Vance was also the primary negotiator during the Panama Canal Zone disputes and helped de-escalate the Cyprus crisis in 1967. This foreign diplomatic experience led to his nomination as President Carter's Secretary of State in 1977.

London: Printed by D. Bond, for J. Bew, 1778. Third Edition, with Additions, and the "Epithalamium" Newly Translated. 240 x 148 mm. (9 1/2 x 5 7/8"). x, [11]-238 pp. LOVELY DARK BLUE STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO ELABORATELY TOOLED IN GILT BY TAFFIN (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in), covers with gilt frame entwined with large lozenge and with rays emanating from central ornate medallion to corners, raised bands, spine gilt in densely stippled compartments with central roundel and floral tools, gilt titling, gilt rolled turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Extra engraved title page with tondo portrait of the poet and engraved frontispiece by Bartolozzi, as called for, and EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 32 DELIGHTFUL ENGRAVINGS BY EISEN AND COCHIN printed on Japon, consisting of 12 full-page scenes, eight tailpieces (these with a second printing of the ornament in sanguine tipped on the plate), and two larger vignettes printed in sanguine tipped onto flyleaves at front and rear. Old dealer description tipped onto front free endpaper. Brunet V, 257; ESTC T101632. See also: Gray, "The Art of Love Poetry," pp. 83-85. Trivial rubbing to joints, intermittent minor foxing to text (due to paper quality), but still A FINE COPY, the plates bright and richly impressed, the binding lustrous and with few signs of wear. This is an attractive edition of a popular and influential collection of Renaissance love poetry, enhanced with amorous engravings by Rococo masters and beautifully bound by a Belle Epoque Parisian binder. In his brief life, Jan Everaerts, or Johannes Secundus (1511-36) studied law in Paris, served as secretary to a Spanish archbishop, and achieved enduring fame for the neo-Latinist poems he wrote, based on the works of Catullus. Originally published posthumously in 1541, this series of 19 poems exploring the joys of kissing "significantly influenced the development of European love poetry," according to Gray. In his essays, Montaigne noted that he found the "Basia" equally as entertaining as the "Decameron" or Rabelais. The gallant engravings here, showing flirtatious couples of the ancien régime, complement the verses perfectly. These include some of the images Charles Eisen created for the Fermiers-Généraux edition of La Fontaine's "Contes et Nouvelles," considered some of the finest French illustrations of the 18th century. Bryan says that Eisen (1720-78), court painter to Louis XV and drawing master to Madame de Pompadour, had a hand in "almost all the important [illustrated] books published in France in his time." His "exquisite plates [are] engraved with a light point and with striking originality." He "took his inspirations direct from nature, but add[ed] something of the ideal, after the manner of Watteau and Boucher." The elegant binding was created by the Taffin workshop in Paris, the upscale hand-bindery operated by Lille publishers and trade binders Taffin-Lefort. Flety notes that Taffin took over the rue de Savoie workshop of E. Rouselle in 1895 and, after a move to new premises following the First World War, the bindery continued to operate until 1954..

Description
1940. Hughes, Langston. Signed broadside for lecture readings at Lincoln University, circa 1940s-early 1950s, documents his role as a leading African American poet and public intellectual returning to his alma mater for a formal campus appearance. The printed announcement lists Hughes as presenting "Lecture-Readings" as part of Lincoln University's Lecture-Recital Series and includes performance of "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," his 1921 poem that established themes of historical continuity, racial memory, and cultural endurance central to his literary career. Issued during the period when Hughes regularly appeared at historically Black colleges and universities following his national recognition as a Harlem Renaissance figure, the broadside records the circulation of Black literature through live academic and communal settings. Lincoln University, where Hughes earned his B.A. in 1929 after leaving Columbia University amid racial exclusion, provided an early institutional foundation for his intellectual development; his later return as featured lecturer underscores the sustained relationship between Black higher education and African American literary production. Hughes, Langston. Signed printed broadside announcing lecture readings at Lincoln University. Undated, circa 1940s-early 1950s. Measures approximately 5 x 7½ inches. Printed program notes Hughes's presentation of "The Negro Speaks of Rivers" alongside musical selections and concludes, "Mr. Hughes will meet the public in Bennett Lounge following the program." Signed prominently in blue ink in the lower blank area, "Langston Hughes." The broadside situates Hughes within mid-century campus programming that combined poetry, music, and public discussion, reflecting the integration of literary performance and Black institutional life. "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," first published when Hughes was a teenager, links African American identity to ancient civilizations and diasporic history, and its inclusion in this program demonstrates the continuity between his early poetic voice and later public presentations. Light overall wrinkling now largely flattened; two small closed tears at the bottom edge and right margin stabilized with archival tape on verso; signature bold and clear. Overall very good condition. Signed piece of African American literary ephemera connecting Harlem Renaissance authorship to historically Black collegiate culture.

Description
New York: The Author, 1951. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. First edition. Corners 9 a bit bumped, very good in worn, about good dust jacket with several tears and some staining on the rear panel. Signed by the author. Because of growing concern over his Communist sympathies, Fast was unable to find a commercial publisher for this book and finally published it himself. In the midst of the Red Scare this study of the eternal quest for freedom, and of the dying days of the Roman Republic as it moved toward Empire, became a best-seller. Basis for the epic film produced by and starring Kirk Douglas, and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The magnificent cast also included Laurence Olivier, Jean Simmons, Charles Laughton, scene-stealer Peter Ustinov (who won an Oscar), Tony Curtis, Woody Strode, and many others. Douglas's unflinching insistence that Dalton Trumbo receive screen credit for his script signaled the end of the Hollywood Blacklist. A compromised but reasonably presentable copy.

Description
Washington, D.C.: National Woman's Party, 1942. Very good. 7 7/8” x 5”. Stapled self-wrappers. Pp. 15. Very good: a touch of faint soiling to wrapper edges; a few small dogears. This is an offprint of an article by an important lawyer, Helen Elizabeth Brown, intended to drum up support for the National Woman's Party (NWP) and to promote equal rights and legal justice for women. Helen Elizabeth Brown was born in Indiana in 1899 but grew up in Fort Worth, Texas. Upon finishing high school she went to work for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, where she paved the way for female reporters by covering the police court circuit, City Hall and local politics. In 1922 she accepted a position on the staff of the Baltimore Post and was the first woman at that paper to cover the courthouse as well. Brown attended law school at the University of Maryland and was admitted to the bar in 1926. In 1927 she formed the first organization for women lawyers in Maryland, and one year later founded the Business and Professional Woman's Council. Brown also served as Assistant City Solicitor, Judge of the Baltimore Housing Court and instructor at the University of Baltimore Law School. This article originally appeared in Equal Rights, the official magazine of the NWP. Founded in 1923, the publication was directed towards women, but also strove to educate men about the benefits of women's suffrage and women's rights. NWP was an outgrowth of the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage, formed in 1913 by Alice Paul and Lucy Burns. The group is best known for their efforts in writing, revising, publicizing and advocating for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). The fight for this bill lasted decades, including a pivotal rewrite in 1943, and it was finally passed by Congress in 1972. With a sharp wit, Brown's article systematically reviewed the legal inequalities women faced, covering labor laws, the 14th and 19th Amendments, “the miracle of marriage” and the “biased masculine process.” Ultimately, Brown posited that “There is now but one remedy for this accumulated injustice, and that is the prompt passage and ratification” of the ERA – “This Amendment will end the lingering tyrannies of the dark ages and counteract the corrosive common-law interpretations by men judges which have destroyed the Constitutional rights which should have been the just heritage of every American woman.” An uncommon and inspiring work on legal justice for women. OCLC shows six holdings.
