Description
30/10/1945. During World War II, Ike received requests for him to send one of his sleeve patches as a souvenir. He never seems to have had one on hand, but instead sent a printed color facsimile patch, with a description of its meaning below the image, and which he signed above the description. The description makes clear that the sword on the insignia “represents avenging justice by which the enemy power will be broken in Nazi-dominated Europe”. The black background represents Nazi oppression, and the rainbow above is emblematic of hope.Miss Martha Wiedermann was one of those who wrote asking for a patch. Eisenhower responded by sending her this printed color facsimile patch, signed above the description. The envelope is still present, postmarked October 30, 1945, just after hostilities ceased. Affixed to a light board. This is just the second Eisenhower sleeve patch we have carried in all these years. The other Ike had sent to his brother.

Description
Padua: Nella stamperia del Seminario, 1710. FIRST EDITIONS. Each work with separate title. With 14 folding plates (10 in the first volume, 4 in the second volume). Contemporary vellum in fine condition; from the library of Antonio Pacchioni (1665-1726), famous anatomist and physician. First editions of Vallisnieri's first two books. In the first work, the author describes the brain of an ox, which supposedly contained some curious stones, petrified during the lifetime of the animal. However, he denies that the mass found in the animal's head is actually its brain. We can't tell you exactly what it turned out to be; you have to read the book. The second work is an important treatise in parasitology, with observations on parasites in the human body. He proved that these parasites were not due to spontaneous generation, as then frequently believed, but grew from eggs. Vallisnieri (1661-1730), the famous pupil of Malpighi, was noted as a physician, professor of medicine at the University of Padua, and as a scientific investigator. He wrote extensively on embryology, biology, natural history and geology, and did fundamental research in the fields of helminthology and entomology. Pacchioni (1665-1726), a pupil of Malpighi, was a successful physician in Rome and head doctor at the Hospital of San Giovanni in Laterano. He collaborated with Lancisi on the explanatory text of Eustachi's Tabulae anatomicae, but is best known for his Dissertatio epistolaris de glandulis conglobatis durae meningis humane (Rome, 1705) which describes the arachnoidal granulations and the slight depressions produced by the arachnoid tissue under the dura. Pacchioni's bodies and Pacchioni's depressions were coined from his discoveries.

Description
The Connecticut Foundry, [c. 1928] The Connecticut Foundry. Pair of "Cape Cod Fisherman" bookends, with "The Connecticut Foundry" and 1928 copyright date engraved on back. About fine, with some natural darkening. Overall, an attractive pair of vintage bookends. Sailors and other maritime themes were popular subjects for bookends in the early 20th century because of their literary connection (Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" as an example) and evocation of adventure and romance. The Connecticut Foundry was a metal goods company founded in 1919 by A. O. Knudson, Arthur Enquist, and Ernest Spencer, based in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, that produced a wide range of high-quality home products. Named after the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts that took place in Paris in 1925, Art Deco was a design movement that flourished in the 1920s and 1930s, characterized by sleekness and geometric lines, and influenced by industrialism, Cubism, Bauhaus, and archaeological discoveries, including King Tut's tomb in 1922. During the height of the movement, Art Deco bookends were popular objects to collect, due to their beauty, affordability, and practicality. Notably, New York City is home to a few of the world's most famous examples of Art Deco architecture: the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, and Rockefeller Center. This collection of Art Deco bookends features a wide and wonderful variety of designs and metal types. The sculpted works span historical figures like Roycroft arts-and-crafts community founder Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915), modern dance pioneer and inventor of the "Serpentine Dance" Loie Fuller (1862-1928), and the legendary literary pair Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) and his muse Beatrice Portinari (ca. 1265-1290). Other designs include lions, serpents, whales, seamen, puppies, and cherubs, among many others. The bookends were made by some of the most prominent American art metal companies of the first half of the 20th century, including PM Craftsman (est. 1911), Armor Bronze (est. 1910 as "National Metalizing Company"), Frankart (est. 1924), and Pompeian Bronze Company (est. 1889 as the "Galvano Bronze Company").. Near Fine. 4.5" x 2" x 6".

Description
Baldwin, ME: By the author, 1822. Very good. Manuscript; 7 1/2 x 6; laid paper, folded and sewn with a string to form a notebook; pp. [8]; text and tables to pp. 1-4, in brown ink; fore-edge unevenly trimmed; light spotting, mostly to margins; in very good condition. An early 19th century document, it addressed Joel Libby, one of the surveyors of highways in the town of Baldwin for the year 1822 and presented him with a list of assessments of estates, in the form of large, detailed tables, of the people in the town, and their respective proportions of seventy two dollars and twenty seven cents "to be expended in labor and materials upon the highways" within their limits. It listed allotments of ten cents per hour for men's labor and ox labor and ten cents per hour for a good plough and six cents per hour for a good cart. The manuscript also stated that any deficiencies from people not paying would be put in the next assessment for a town tax. The town of Baldwin, now part of the Portland-Biddeford metropolitan area, was originally known as Flinstown and was founded by a grant to the survivors of the Company of Captain Flint of Concord, Mass in 1774. It was incorporated in 1802 and named after one of its earliest settlers, Loammi Baldwin. At the time, the town was said to be "destitute of a meeting house and minister" and that the first roads constructed through it were in a "dangerous condition for teams, carriages, and horses." Apparently, in the following years, efforts had been made to improve the condition of the roadways.

Description
No Binding. Very Good. quarto, one page, formerly folded, in very good, clean and legible condition. Bache, while traveling writes his father, summing up his opinions of Millard Fillmore's Washington: "My Dear Father, Supposing that a word from me will be expected. I will write these few lines. Our visit here has been reasonably pleasant and satisfactory. . To day we visit Mt. Vernon having delayed the view till now on a/c of the weather. I will not attempt to write my observations on "the Lions" at Washington - only to say "some ain't Lions" they being "apes." ." If the writer visited the United States Senat that week, he might have caught a glimpse of Henry Clay, Jefferson Davis, Stephen Douglas, Hannibal Hamlin, Lewis Cass, Salmon Chase, William Seward and Charles Sumner. Then again, he might have seen some of the other forty Senators who, in animal simile, were far from majestic lords of the political jungle.
