Description
1895. RODENBACH, Georges. Les Vierges. WITH: Les Tombeaux. Two volumes. Unpaginated, illustrated with 4 original coloured lithographs by Jozsef Rippl-Ronai, plus 3 woodcuts by James Pitcairn-Knowles. 8vo, 250 x 170 mm., both bound in original publisher's illustrated wrappers with woodcut illustrations by Pitcairn-Knowles, and each preserved in a morocco-backed sleeve and matching slipcase. Paris: Samuel Bing, 1895. Pitcairn-Knowles conceived an idea for an imaginary book and illustrated it with a series of woodcuts. He then induced his friend Jozsef Rippl-Ronai to create four coloured lithographs for another unwritten book, Les Vierges. With these illustrations already finished, they approached gallery owner Samual Bing, who had excellent connections in the publishing world. Bing commissioned the Belgian writer Georges Rodenbach, author of the symbolist novel Bruges la Morte, to write texts based on the Nabis-style illustrations of Pitcairn-Knowles and Rippl-Ronai. Fine copies of these fragile works, each limited to 500 copies. Turn of the Century 64. From Manet to Hockney 12. Monod 9810.

Description
Richmond, VA, 1875. Chicago, IL: 1880s. 6 ½" x 4 ¼". Fair.~~Cabinet card with printed signature of Miss Irene Woodward, "America's Original Tattooed Lady". Known as La Belle Irene, she toured America and Europe. She claimed variously to have been tattooed by her father or abducted by tribesmen in the "South Seas", she was actually tattooed by Samuel F. O'Reilly. Woodward's fame traces to the golden age of the "freak show", in which iconic figures considered strange by the general public were made a spectacle. Her partial nudity necessary for observation of her tattoos contributed to her magnetic appeal, which she balanced for the media with charm and intelligence. This image shows Woodward casually posing with her arms exposed. ~~Damage across top right corner/edges but otherwise good. ~.

Nineteenth Century Watercolor of a Comely Boy Holding the Union Jack by the Cliffs of Dover

Description
England, 1840. A winsome watercolor portrait done probably by a gifted amateur, with a sublime naivete -- some might not find this painting naive at all. What sets this painting apart from typical amateur artwork is how movement is suggested; how wonderful is the spring in the boy's foot -- he almost looks as if he is dancing! The only things that to us peg this more of an amateur are the hands, the hardest thing to paint, which here are done without polish, and the waves of the flag in the wind or as the boy plays with it seem executed with a cursoriness. N.d., circa 1840. Children's attire is especially challenging to date, as it generally evolved slower than adult fashion, but the decade of the 40s is certainly consistent with the clothing we see, and the curls in his hair give him a Byronic androgynous beauty, and that would suggest the likelihood of an earlier date, with the yellow top hat, possibly something on the later side. The backdrop with the lighthouse is almost certainly representing the Cliffs of Dover, also something consistent with the gentle patriotic messaging of the portrait. The watercolor is 20 by 18 cm. The painting is on a thin paper probably done in a sketchbook. We might expect such a painting to have been mounted into an album, but the back of the paper is incredibly clean -- there is nothing to suggest it was pasted or somehow attached to something else.

Description
New York: William Morrow, 2014. First Paperback. Paperback. Color illustrated wrap. Near fine.. 278 pages. 20.5 x 13.5 cm. In How to Love Wine, New York Times wine critic Eric Asimov examines why the American wine culture produces anxiety and suggests how readers fearlessly develop a sense of discovery and wonder as they explore and enjoy the diversity and complexity of the world of wine. With warmth, candor, and intelligent authority, Asimov interweaves his professional knowledge and insights with engaging personal stories of his love affair with wine. In a direct, down-to-earth manner, Asimov discusses favorite vineyards, wine's singluar personalities, the flaws of wine criticism, and current wine issues.
