Description
London: n.p., 1998. Fine.. Limited edition artist's book that reflects on the colors, textures, and history of two ancient cities, incorporating a variety of illustration methods and materials. Susan Allix reflects on her creative philosophy, "I am concerned with visual things so I see books as full of colour and form in a pictorial sense as well as through the images created in my mind by the words, and through the sculptural qualities a book possesses" (artist statement). This richly-illustrated textural travelogue, with only two pages of text, is a beautiful example of Allix's artistry and skill at telling stories through visuals. Only nine copies of EAST FROM HERE were produced, one of her smallest limitations. 13.25'' x 10.5''. Original black goatskin-backed white linen boards. Original stiff paper dust jacket with color, embossed, suede, and metal clip elements, with cut-outs revealing the boards. Endpapers of hand-made blue paper. Illustrated with etchings, aquatints, collograph, drypoint, and other methods in color, gilt, and black and white. [50] leaves, [1] half-sheet, some with cut-outs. Signed by Allix to colophon and numbered 7 of 9 copies. In original blue cloth box with paper labels to spine and front joint, lined with soft material and suede. Metal clips a touch tarnished, with a tiny area of rubbing to jacket. Bright and clean.

Description
Paper. Good. Leporello with twelve panels, each with an oval hand-colored lithographic cameo view of a building or landmark, mostly exterior, in Franzensbad, a renowned Bohemian spa, or one of the nearby spa towns including Eger. These spas are located in what is now the Czech Republic, and at the time this leporello was issued, was a part of Austria. While their natural springs were known as far back as the 14th century, they became fashionable resorts in the early 19th century, attracting the Emperor, wealthy Russians, Goethe, Beethoven and many other notables such as Theodor Herzl. N.d., circa 1840. Measuring 10.5 by 7.5 when closed. Each of the oval cameos is 5 cm at its greatest height, 7 cm across at its widest. Depicted are the Salzquelle, the Egerer Badshaus (Eger bathhouse), the cafe in the park, a pleasure pavillion called the Neuquelle (new sources), the Siechenhaus, Loimanns Badehaus, the Franzensbad Kirche, the Salz und Wiesenquelle, the Franzensquelle, the Kaiserstrasse, the Louisenquelle, and a panaroma of Franzensbad. Most of the structures are classical in style, a few, grand in scale and ambition. All the illustrations are populated with well-dressed people, all tiny in the illustrations, to give a sense of Biedermeier scale and of the spirit and refinement of the place. Scarce -- no copies found on OCLC First Search or KVK. Condition: tape repair at fold of original paper cover. Foxing throughout the borders or margins. The illustrations themselves are exceptional bright and vivid.

Dated March 23, 1966 and signed by both Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Ball and Arnaz divorced in 1960 but they both founded the Indian Wells Resort Hotel, at Indian Wells, California, in 1956. Desi was remarried by 1963. While separate signatures of Ball and Arnaz are available it is difficult to obtain both their signatures on the same page. Although divorced, Ball and Arnaz remained close for the rest of their lives, with Arnaz calling Lucy every night until he died. He also sent her flowers every November 19th- their wedding day! Description
1920. Silver gelatin photograph of thirty-eight nursing students including one Black student. Circa 1920s. Photograph measures approx. 8" by 9.5". Photography studio stamp on verso from Commercial & Photo View Co. in Oakland, California. Image shows thirty-nine women posed standing in six rows on the front steps of a building, facing right with faces turned toward camera and smiling. Notably, one of the graduates on the far right side, fourth row, is a Black woman, while the rest are white. Nursing schools and other educational institutions of this time period were overwhelmingly racially segregated. Students are dressed in short sleeved nursing uniforms with white lapels, white shoes, and dark toned collared capes folded back over right shoulders to show a light toned lining. Mid-length nursing capes were popular from the 1920s-40s. Many of the women in this photo sport short, finger-waved hairstyles and drop-waist dresses indicative of the late 1920s. Minor light creasing. Chips to left side and top left corner on border not affecting image. Small rip at top left hand side. Overall very good condition. Scarce photograph of an early integrated class of nurses.

The 104-gun first-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy was ordered in 1758 and launched in 1765. It would become best known for being Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Throughout the 19th century, it also served as a troopship and a prison ship. Moved to dry dock in 1922, the ship went through several major restoration periods, eventually became a museum, part of the National Historic Fleet, and since October 2012, HMS Victory has been the flagship of the First Sea Lord.

Paris: Hazan / Institut du Monde Arabe, 2003. Hardcover. VG/VG+: Minor edgewear to the dust jacket. The book is in excellent condition.. Quarto. Hardcover. Boards bound in black paper with a glossy illustrated jacket. Green end papers. 295 pages with illustrations (some color); map.
