Description
[Durango]: Catedral de Durango, 1801. Broadside, approximately 16.5 x 12.25 inches. Old folds, light dust soiling and wear at edges. Completed in manuscript, with additional manuscript docketing on blank verso. Very good plus. A very rare broadside membership patent for the religious confraternity of the cathedral in Durango, Mexico, filled out for a female member, Toie Dionicio Garcia, on July 1, 1801. The text lists the responsibilities of the member, including assistance in the Mass and other services, and enumerates the indulgences that are obtainable, the chief of which is the forgiveness of all sins confessed on the day of entry into the confraternity. The final paragraph lists other posthumous benefits, including money towards a funeral and a mass said upon death of the member and on several following occasions. Manuscript docketing concerning the fulfillment of the confraternity's obligations and payment of funeral expenses in 1809 is inscribed on the blank verso. Interestingly printed, with a decorative border consisting of several types of rolls and tools and with three devotional woodcuts, and a good document of confraternal practices in the provincial cities of colonial Mexico. Not in OCLC, though we know of a copy at Princeton.
