Description
28/02/1862. He was later promoted to Lt. Colonel for gallantry in action at the Battle of GrovetonDocument signed, with fine engravings of an eagle, flags and cannons, Washington, February 28, 1862, naming Percy B. Spear a Commissary of Subsistence of Volunteers with the rank of Captain, effective November 30, 1861. The document is countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. The appointment is listed in the U.S. Army Register. The Civil War Commissary Department was responsible for procuring, storing, and distributing food to soldiers. The rations managed by the department included such things as pork, beef, bread, coffee, and soap. But Spear did not serve solely as a Commissary for the entire war. He would soon serve an aide-de-camp in the Fifth Corps in the Gettysburg campaign, with Gen. James Barnes mentioning him with distinction in dispatches. Spear ended the war as a Brevet Major. In July 1865, he was appointed Lt. Colonel of Volunteers for meritorious service, and for gallantry in action at the Battle of Groveton in 1862. After the war, he was again named Commissary of Subsistence, this time at the recommendation of Gen. George G. Meade.

Description
12/07/1871. Édouard René Lefèbvre de Laboulaye was a French jurist, poet, author and anti-slavery activist. In 1865, he originated the idea of a monument presented by the French people to the United States that resulted in the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor.Autograph Letter Signed “E. Laboulaye,” Versailles, July 12, 1871 to an unnamed man who wanted his help in obtaining a position. In French, an incomplete translation reads “I do not know anyone at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs…I'll find out what I could do and I am very willing to forward your request that you addressed to the minister. I am very happy to be able to contribute to obtaining you a modest position.” A very gracious letter helping someone, and a very uncommon autograph.A lawyer by profession, following the Paris Commune of 1870, Laboulaye was elected to the national assembly. During the American Civil War, he was a zealous advocate of the Union cause and the abolition of slavery, publishing histories of the cultural connections of the two nations. At the war's conclusion in 1865, he became president of the French Emancipation Committee that aided newly freed slaves in the U.S. The same year he had the idea of presenting a statue representing liberty as a gift to the United States. The sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, one of Laboulaye's friends, turned the idea into reality, though sadly Laboulaye didn’t live to see its completion.

Description
1964. First Edition. Signed. (SENDAK, Maurice) JARRELL, Randall. The Bat-Poet. New York: Macmillan; London: Collier-Macmillan, (1964). Octavo, original blind-stamped brown cloth, original dust jacket. $1200.First edition, presentation copy, of this children's story about embracing individualism, inscribed to a close friend and neighbor: ""For Elizabeth From Maurice Sendak May '75.""""In this story about a young bat who cannot sleep during the day and follows his own individual and isolating creative lights, Jarrell offered his young readers what many consider to be one of the best statements about the plight of the artist in his search for creative independence on the one hand and his longing for acceptance on the other"" (Children's Books and Their Creators, 352). Hanrahan A60. The former owner of this inscribed book was Maurice Sendak's neighbor, Andrew, from Ridgefield, Connecticut. Sendak bought a home and studio in Ridgefield in 1972 with his longtime partner, Eugene Glynn, and lived there until his death. Andrew first encountered Sendak in 1975 during one of his daily dog walks. (Sendak owned many dogs throughout his life, and they often starred in his books.) Andrew was immediately taken with Sendak, who reminded him of his recently deceased father. One day, Andrew called Sendak at home and asked if he could join him on his walks. Andrew and Sendak thus embarked on a 37-year friendship that also included the Andrew's mother, Betty, as well as Andrew's brother. Sendak went on long walks and hikes with Andrew and his family regularly, discussing general life events, opera, and books. He also invited them into his studio to show off works in progress. Andrew's mother, Betty, was an avid reader and collector and she and Sendak would talk late into the night about books. Sendak offered Betty advice about how to find and authenticate rare children's books, which she used to build her collection. Additionally, he frequently bartered for autographs (i.e. a cake for an inscribed drawing). Sendak often referred to Betty as ""Elizabeth"" in inscriptions as he felt that ""Betty"" was too common a name. The many inscribed drawings, along with first editions, signed books, and other valuable items grew into one of the country's premier Sendak collections. Tiny bookseller ticket.Book with only a couple tiny spots of soiling to text and a bit of toning to cloth, dust jacket with light wear and toning to extremities and minor repair to spine head. An extremely good inscribed copy.

This first opera was Ingwelde, a music drama based on a poem by Count Ferdinand von Sporck, which recounts the Scandinavian Svarfdälasaga in Zedlitz's Altnordische Bilder. First performed in Karlsruhe in 1894 under Felix Mottl, initially it was greeted with critical approval and received further performances under Strauss in Munich in 1897." Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1965. First edition. BENTLEY GLASS: FIRST EDITION OF AN ANALYSIS OF THE EVOLUTION OF HUMAN VALUES, ETHICS IN GENETICS, AND THE NEED FOR CONSILIENCE BETWEEN SCIENCE AND HUMANITIES--SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY. 8 inches tall color printed paper covers, inscribed verso of half title page, "To Elof Carlson in warm appreciation of a master teacher. Bentley Glass 1970," ix, 101 pp. Near fine. HIRAM BENTLEY GLASS (1906 - 2005) was an American geneticist and noted columnist. Born in China to missionary parents, he attended college at Baylor University in Texas. He then furthered his education at the University of Texas, where he received his Ph.D. degree under the mentorship of geneticist Hermann Joseph Muller. His first major academic appointment was at Johns Hopkins University, at which time he was also a regular columnist for the Baltimore Evening Sun newspaper. He taught at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and at Goucher College in Maryland before joining the faculty at Johns Hopkins. Glass was a frequent attendee of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Symposia. In 1965, Glass became the first Academic Vice-President and Professor of Biological Sciences at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Like his doctoral mentor H. J. Muller, Bentley Glass was deeply concerned about eugenics. In response to the destructive (consciously or unconsciously racist) views of Charles Davenport, Morris Steggerda and others, Glass wrote "Geneticists Embattled: Their Stand Against Rampant Eugenics and Racism in America During the 1920s and 1930s". PROVENANCE: ELOF AXEL CARLSON (born 1931) is distinguished teaching professor emeritus at State University of New York at Stony Brook, as well as an American geneticist and noted historian of Science. Carlson earned his B.A. in 1953 from New York University, and his PhD in 1958 in zoology from Indiana University under the mentorship of Hermann Joseph Muller.
