London: Frederick Warne and Co, 1905. First Edition. Boards. Very good. Beatrix POTTER. Edmund Evans, The Racquet Court Press, Swan Street, London S.E., [printer.] First edition, Hofer variant boards. 12mo (7 1/8" x 5 ½"); 51 [1]pp; brownish maroon boards, stamped-white border and title, color portrait of a cat onlaid to front within a white-stamped frame; mottled lavender endpapers; partial bookseller's ticket to foot of rear pastedown; gift inscription to half-title dated 1905; frontispiece plus 9 color plates, 21 vignettes in b&w; light spotting and rubbing to boards, ½" crack to foot front hinge, some finger marks; very good. Quimby No. 9 (Hofer). Linder. The first of Beatrix Potter's books to be published in this larger format in order to increase the size of the illustrations. From 1930 and on, the book was published in the smaller format to bring it into size with the other Potter books. Rushing into publication, Potter had no pictorial endpapers ready, so early editions are bound with the mottled lavender. The story scene is set in Sawrey, the village that she loved, and many of the illustration backgrounds were sketches of nearby homes. A lovely story about a cat named Ribby and a dog named Duchess.

Boston in New-England: Printed by John Draper, printer to His Excellency the governour and Council, for Daniel Gookin, over against the Old-South Meeting-House., 1746. 30pp, but lacking the half title and final blank. Attractive ornamentation. Disbound with some loosening. Good plus. "For one Person alone to have the Government of a People in his Hands, would be too great a Temptation. It tends to excite and draw forth the Pride of Man, to make him unsufferably haughty; it gives him too much Liberty to exert his Corruptions; and it encourages him to become a Tyrant and an Oppressor." Description
[Washington, D.C.]: Smithsonian Institution, 1919. Fabric Sample. Fabric. Very good. A piece of fabric from the Curtiss NC-4 Flying Boat, which made the first transatlantic flight on May 27, 1919. This relic was produced by the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, which restored the aircraft on the 50th Anniversary of the fli. Document measures 13" x 20", fabric sample measures 2" x 2". Held in archival sleeve. Light offsetting where previously framed. The Smithsonian revised its policies after this production and no longer offers pieces of restored relics for public sale. The Curtiss NC-4 flying boat, built by the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company for the U.S. Navy during World War I, became the first aircraft to cross the Atlantic Ocean in May 1919. Part of the Navy-Curtiss series of large multi-engine seaplanes designed for long-range flight, the NC-4 had four engines and a wingspan of over 120 feet. Alongside NC-1 and NC-3, it departed from Rockaway, New York, stopping in Newfoundland and the Azores; while the other aircraft were forced to withdraw, NC-4, commanded by Lieutenant Commander Albert C. Read and a crew of five, completed the 3,925-mile journey, landing in Lisbon on May 27, 1919. Though taking 23 days with stops for refueling and repairs, the flight proved the feasibility of transoceanic aviation. The NC-4 is now preserved at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida.

London and New York: The Butterick Publishing Co. (Limited), 1893. Paperback. Very good. Paperback. 11" X 8". 125pp. Bound in black textured printed paper, with spine backed in thin cloth. Rubbing, toning, and bumps to covers, corners, and edges binding, with small tears to spine. Hinges tender; binding shaken, but remains sound. Laid in are several folded period hand-drawn lace patterns, as well as newspaper clippings and a blank order form. A presentable 1893 printing of this guide to lace-making by the Butterick Publishing Company, founded by Ebenezer Butterick to distribute the first graded sewing patterns. By 1867, it had released its first magazine, Ladies Quarterly of Broadway Fashions, followed by The Metropolitan in 1868. These magazines contained patterns and fashion news. In the spring of 1867, E. Butterick and Co. began publishing Ladies Quarterly of Broadway Fashions. In 1868, the monthly magazine The Metropolitan began publication. Both magazines were aimed at women and served as a means to sell Butterick paper patterns via mail order. In 1873, the two magazines were merged into a single publication, The Delineator. The magazine served as a marketing tool for Butterick patterns and discussed fashion and fabrics, including advice for home sewists.
