Description
Cantabrigiae [Cambridge]: Cornelius Crownfield, 1710. THE DEDICATION COPY, ONE OF 150 ON LARGE PAPER, per Mackenzie. 248 x 192 mm. (9 3/4 x 7 1/2"). 4 p.l., xxiv, 532, [2], 318, 283-304 pp., [84] leaves.Edited by Rev. Joseph Wasse. FINE CONTEMPORARY RED MOROCCO, GILT, covers panelled with gilt fillets accented with fleuron, acorn, and scallop tools, raised bands, spine compartments densely gilt with similar tools, red morocco label, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt (probably with some very facile repairs to top and bottom of joints and spine). Front pastedown with the armorial bookplate of the dedicatee, Henry Grey, Duke of Kent, dated 1713, and with the armorial ex-libris of Robert Offley Ashburton Crewe-Milnes, Marquess of Crewe; front free endpaper with engraved armorial bookplate of Thomas Philip, Earl de Grey (see below for all). Dibdin II, 385; Mackenzie, "The Cambridge University Press 1696-1712" I, 273-76. ◆Front joint with thin crack at head and tail, covers with darkish splotches (obvious, but somehow not overly offending with antique morocco like this), other very minor signs of use, but the binding still extremely pleasing as a grand specimen for an important dedicatee. A MOST ATTRACTIVE COPY INTERNALLY, especially clean and fresh, with only negligible imperfections. This is the stately dedication copy of Wasse's monumental edition of Sallust, in its original handsome unrestored binding. Described by Dibdin as "an excellent edition . . . the merits of which have long been acknowledged by the literary world," our version was prepared by Wasse after consulting nearly 80 manuscripts, including "some very ancient editions." A huge undertaking, it spent five years in the press. Oxford Antiquary Thomas Hearne mentioned it in his "Remarks," amazed that "Mr. Wasse . . . has so swell'd his Salust [sic] . . . with Notes" that "his Index will be upwards of 20 sheets"; in fact, the Index consumes 84 leaves (21 quires). The text of the present volume contains the only two extant historical works of Sallust (86-34 B.C.), which are his history of the conspiracy of Catiline against the senate in the year Cicero was consul, and his history of the Roman war against the Numidian (Algerian) chieftain Jugurtha, brought to its conclusion by the great soldier and populist politician Marius. As a stylist, Sallust has enjoyed great fame for his artistic and epigrammatic speeches with their vividly delineated characters. A fellow of Queen's College, Cambridge, Joseph Wasse (1672-1738) served as chaplain to the Marquess (later Duke) of Kent, Henry Grey (1671-1740), to whom he dedicated this work. The handsome binding is of very high quality and is decorated in the Cambridge style by an unknown binder of that city. Grey was a courtier who held a number of prominent positions: under Queen Anne, he served as Lord Chamberlain of the Household and Knight of the Garter, and as one of the Lords Justices (Regents) of the Realm upon her death; under George I, he was Lord of the Bedchamber, Lord Steward of the Household, and Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal. Our volume was passed down in his family, through the line of his granddaughter Jemima Campbell, Marchioness Grey, to Thomas Philip de Grey, 2nd Earl de Grey (1781-1859), an amateur architect who rebuilt the family seat, Wrest Park in Bedfordshire. He became the first president of the Royal Institute of British Architects. It was later in the 24,000-volume library of the politician Robert Crewe-Milnes (1858-1945), Marquess of Crewe..

Description
ALICE TOKLAS (1877-1967). Toklas was an American-born member of the early-twentieth century Parisian avant-garde. ALS. 1 pg. 8 x 10. September 12, 1946. 5 rue Christine. An autograph letter signed Alice Toklas to Dear Tony: Just the letter Gertrude would have liked - thanks for writing it to me. In haste Im sending you Carl Van Vechtens address in New York 101 Central Pak West- ring himEndicott 2-8748 and o to see him if you have time. I have written to him about your first chapters. Basket and I are looking forward to seeing you soon. Alice Toklas had a nearly-four-decade long romance with fellow American expat, novelist and playwright Gertrude Stein (1874-1946). Together, they hosted a literary salon in Paris at their home at 27 rue de Fleurus, frequented by other American expats in Paris like Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Paul Bowles, Thornton Wilder, and Sherwood Anderson, as well as avant-garde painters like Picasso and Matisse. In 1933, Stein published her memoir, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, written in Toklas voice, a literary bestseller that vaulted Stein from relative obscurity into the mainstream literary world. Today they are buried side-by-side in Paris. However, because their relationship, though an open secret, had no formal standing, Steins family denied Toklas access to paintings and other items deeded to her in Steins will. Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964) was a patron of the Harlem Renaissance and the literary executor of Gertrude Steins estate. The letter was sent to Tony Scott, an up-and-coming writer with Variety. The letter also references Basket, Toklas and Steins poodle. The letter is written on thin stationery paper and is in fine condition.

Boston: Printed for D. Henchman, 1735. [2], 33, [1- errata and advertisement] pp. Lacking the half title and final blank leaf. Scattered light foxing. Attractive ornamentation. Good plus. Wigglesworth opposed unbridled evangelism, the Great Awakening, and Reverend Whitefield. He warns his audience not "to believe every Pretender to divine Revelations to be under the Conduct of the Spirit of Truth, because he himself had Confidence to affirm it; but to examine first what Right such Persons could make out to such Pretences; and not to receive the Dictates of any Man as divine Oracles, whatever specious Pretences he might make without sufficient Reason to believe him a Teacher sent from God." Very Good Plus
Description
New York: Selchow & Righter. Very Good Plus. Paper. Circa 1870s word game with 72 pieces, each with a letter and part of a picture illustration one of twelve words (11 of the pieces have no letter and add to the width of the pictorial for the words "bridge" and "coach". The pieces, or "slices" as they are called, are 7.25 by 1.25 inches each. Several of the illustrations relate to specific New York City locations: St. Paul's Church between Vesey and Fulton Streets, the statue of Washington in Union Square, the High Bridge spanning the Harlem River, the Bethesda Fountain in Central Park, and the "Stevens" House, which is a typical neo-Gothic pile such as once populated Fifth Avenue. It is quite conceivable that some of the other items too had a specific New York context, but I have not been able to establish that as yet. The words are: coach, yacht, boat, fort, house, fountain, bridge, car, dam, statue, engine, and church. All the illustrations have delightful color and would work well framed and hung on a wall. The box housing the pieces provides instructions for the game underneath the lid along with black and white illustrations of each object. All the pieces are present, and most are clean, with a few having some minor soilage. The box has the usual wear along edges and soilage of the top illustration. The box has had some repair, with one edge of the lid a slightly different color, but overall it has integrity as a box and if treated respectfully, should remain attractively so. The box measures 9 by 8 by 1 inch. Quite an extraordinary rare game with special interest for Gothamites.

Description
Chicago, Illinois: Haymarket Books, 2022. Reprint. Paperback. New. 360 pp. Octavo [22.7 cm]. Illustrated wraps. From the publisher: "ABOLISHING STATE VIOLENCE is an urgent and accessible analysis of the key structures of state violence in our world today, and a clarion call to action for their abolition. Connecting movements for social justice with ideas for how activists can support and build on this analysis and strategy, this book shows that there are many mutually supportive abolition movements, each enhanced by a shared understanding of the relationship between structures of violence and a shared framework for challenging them on the basis of their roots in patriarchy, racism, militarism, settler colonialism, and capitalism. This book argues that abolition is transformative. It is about defunding, demilitarizing, disbanding, and divesting from current structures of violence, but also about imagining new ways to organize and care for each other and our planet, and about building new systems and cultures to sustain ourselves in a more equitable, free, and peaceful way. It shows that change is possible.
