Description: U.S.S. Dickman Near the Coast of Casablanca, 1942. Good. 10¾" x 7 5/8". Single sheet printed one side. Good: old folds and a couple of chips. This is an extraordinary item that's also extraordinarily rare: an inspiring message to troops aboard the U.S.S. Dickman from Major General George S. Patton, printed on ship in advance of Operation Torch. It was found years ago in a collection of documents from a sailor who served on the Dickman. Operation Torch occurred from November 8-16, 1942. It was an invasion of French North Africa which met the British objective of securing victory in Northern Africa while allowing United States troops to begin fighting Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy on a limited scale. Patton was in command of the operations Western Task Force which was aimed at Casablanca and stated, "In making our landing, we may be opposed by a limited number of Germans. It is not known whether the French African Army, composed of both white and colored troops, will contest our landing. It is regrettable to contemplate the necessity of fighting the gallant French who are at heart sympathetic towards us, but all resistance by whomever offered must be destroyed." We find nothing similar in institutional libraries or at auction.

This rare 1854 edition of Prison Life and Reflections recounts the harrowing ordeal of George Thompson and his fellow abolitionists, James Burr and Alanson Work, who were arrested in Missouri in 1841 for attempting to assist enslaved individuals in escaping to freedom. The book serves as both a personal prison memoir and a broader abolitionist testament-an eyewitness indictment of slavery, Southern legal systems, and the moral price of resisting injustice under U.S. law. The three men, students at the Mission Institute in Quincy, Illinois-a known abolitionist training ground-crossed into Missouri with the intention of aiding enslaved people to escape. Their arrest and conviction led to a five-year sentence in the Missouri State Penitentiary. Thompson, one of the imprisoned, offers a detailed and deeply spiritual account of their experience: from arrest and trial, to the brutal conditions of confinement, to their eventual release. More than a narrative of punishment, Prison Life and Reflections is a work of moral testimony, filled with reflections on faith, endurance, and the righteousness of antislavery resistance. It circulated widely in abolitionist circles and was used to galvanize Northern sentiment against the Fugitive Slave Act and the legal compromises that upheld slavery. The volume is of critical historical importance for documenting the lived experiences of white abolitionists punished for their solidarity with enslaved Black Americans, and for illustrating the risks faced by those who participated in early iterations of the Underground Railroad. Its emotional tone, religious introspection, and eyewitness testimony provide rare insight into the penitentiary system and conscience-driven protest in pre-Civil War America. Some wear to covers, some penciled inscriptions to free end papers, and foxing throughout. Binding and text remain tight and clean. Overall very good condition. Scarce, at the time of this writing, OCLC states only one first edition is found in institutional library holdings.

The Cambridge University Press began in 1534 when it was granted letters patent by King Henry VIII, and since then the publishing house, part of Cambridge University, has printed titles from numerous authors ranging from John Milton and Isaac Newton to Noam Chomsky and Stephen Hawking. This bibliography of the Press includes publications from 1696 to 1712, and also details the financial side of the business, with many facsimiles of material printed by the Press; the set forms an extensive picture of just a small part of the work produced by the world's oldest publishing house. Loosely laid into the book is a small single sheet "With the compliments of D.F. McKenzie" printed at the top, and a short note in manuscript beneath, "And with renewed Thanks for a most enjoyable morning last January". This obviously a note from the author and presumably in his hand, althought neither signed nor dated. ___DESCRIPTION: Both volumes of full blue cloth, red stamped spine label with gilt lettering and ruled borders, oval red stamped spine label with gilt ruled border and volume number, top edge stained teal, title page with emblem of the University in black, Volume I with black-and-white facsimiles of printed material from the Press and four three-colour charts of "work done by compositors and pressmen"; quarto size (11" by 7.5"), pagination: Volume I: [i-vi] vii-xv [xvi] 1-432 [433-435]; Volume II: [i-iv] v-ix [x] 1-381. In orange dust jackets with white and black lettering, the coat of arms of Cambridge University in black and title in white on the front panel, white and black lettering on the spine, the address of the Press on the rear panel, and a description of the book on the front flap with the original price of $55.00 ("in U.S.A."); note the lower left corner is clipped (we presume by the publisher, since the printed price is still present), the rear flaps are blank. Loosely laid in is the short note referred to above, measuring 6.75" by 4.25", written on brown paper, the printed words in dark brown. ___CONDITION: Both volumes fine overall, with clean boards, straight corners without any rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors are clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; Volume I with the rear corners gently bumped and Volume II with an extremely small spot on the spine, else fine. The dust jackets near fine overall, not price-clipped, clean, with only a few spots of light edgewear; the spines are lightly sunned and the jacket for Volume II has a small area which caught and wrinkled (no missing pieces, but the wrinkled area is obvious).
