18/01/1990. I will never ever forget your courage, your family love, your pride in your fallen son - your faith, your just plain classJust days after James Markell died in Operation Just Cause (the overthrow and capture of Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega), the President came to Cincinnati to address the Chamber of Commerce and met with the family privately at the Hyatt Hotel where he was speaking. A few weeks later, a note arrived from the President.  It is a very uncommon, important ALS as President. Autograph Letter Signed, The White House, January 18, 1990, to Sandra Rouse. “I am so glad we met. I will never ever forget your courage, your family love, your pride in your fallen son - your faith, your just plain class.  With best wishes, Sincerely George Bush.”

Two typed sheets in English from the publisher on flyleaf explaining the genesis and meaning of the book, with English index list of the illustrations tipped in over the Polish index in the back. 8 text pages in Polish followed by the full page color illustrations by Polish children. First edition on the English explanation stated as 1955 with 10,000 copies. However, title page states publication date of 1954; copyright page states 1955. Some of the drawings are from the German occupation, and others are post-WWII. Powerful and poignant drawings. Hardcover book in blue cloth is in fine conditon. DJ in good condition in spite of some repaired tears. Otherwise fine. Attached to the end papers is a complete typed 2 page description of the contents in English. Also a loose letter describing the involvement of the Polish Embassy in sending this book to patrons. The last 4 pages is an index also in English of the titles of all 101 illustrations by the children. A very nice presentation copy with unusual additions by the Embassy of Poland.

Description
New York: Gotham Book Mart, 1973 First edition, first printing. Signed by Gorey on title page. Publisher's light gray paper wrappers; in the original black paper dust jacket, white paper label with Gorey's illustration of a black armless doll laid onto the front wrapper. Near fine book, with just a touch of wear to spine ends and light soiling to a few pages; near fine dust jacket, with head of spine lightly bumped and rear panel just barely scratched. Overall, a charming copy. The Black Doll is Gorey's screenplay for an unproduced silent film. Like many of his works, the plot is set in a Victorian-esque setting. It tells the story of the black doll, a "PRO," or priceless ritual object, from the ancient Asian city of Glub (or Blug), which is sought after by various groups of people. The black doll figure is a recurring figure in Gorey's books, and makes appearances in The Listing Attic (1954), The Willowdale Handcar (1962), The Tunnel Calamity (1984), and The Raging Tide (1987). Gorey, a film buff particularly inspired by the works of Louis Feuillade, blends his own signature black humor with the tradition elements of silent film, creating a unique screenplay that provides much more insight into the author's thought process than many of his other books, which are hallmarked by their minimal use of text. In 1998, The Black Doll was reprinted along with several color illustrations by Gorey in Scenario, The Magazine of Screenwriting Art. In 2009, Pomegranate published a new, hardcover edition of The Black Doll with the Scenario illustrations, an interview with Gorey, and an introduction by Andreas Brown.. Signed. First Edition. Original Wrappers. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

New York: William Wood & Co., 1872. First edition. 1872 PRACTICING PHYSICIANS' MANUAL FOR PERFORMING AUTOPSIES. 14 x 23.5 cm hardcover, red cloth binding, gilt title to spine, ink signature of "John A. Douglass/ Nov. 8, 1877" to front free endpaper, and top of title page, [i-iii], 376 pp. Wear to corners, spine faded, spine ends frayed, light browning to page edges, scattered marginal notations. Very good in custom archival mylar cover. This was Delafield's first important book, and was later rewritten and enlarged into "A Handbook of Pathological Anatomy and Histology" (1885) that became a textbook for medical education. The first edition, offered here, is divided into 4 parts: the first gives the method of performing autopsies on the bodies of adults and children; the second gives in detail the lesions which have been observed in each organ; the third gives the lesions which are found after deaths from general diseases, from violence, and from poisons (forensic cases); the fourth gives a short classification of tumors. FRANCIS DELAFIELD (1841 - 1915) was an American physician, born in New York City. After earning his MD from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University and further study abroad, he returned to New York and was appointed to the staff of Bellevue Hospital and to the chair of pathology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons. He served also as pathologist and attending physician to Roosevelt Hospital and as surgeon to the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. He was the primary physician who was consulted following the shooting of United States President William McKinley in September 1901. He held membership in the New York Academy of Medicine, the Pathological Society, and the Association of American Physicians, becoming the first president of the latter organization in 1886. In 1948, in recognition for his career in medicine, the Francis Delafield Hospital opened as a cancer research center for Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.
