Description
[Bangor, Maine,] 1847. Broadside, 12.5" x 9.5". Text in two columns below title, early pencil inscription on verso: "Petition of Antiquarian Society." CONDITION: Very good, foxed, horizontal and vertical creases. A satirical memorial of the Bangor Antiquarian Society (established in 1864, a precursor of the Bangor Historical Society) with seven numbered resolutions, including "to grant [the Antiquarian Society] an unlimited charter to build a Boom, in the Gulf Stream"; "To give said Society authority to send delegates annually to the Legislature, to sit in the Lobby; provided, however, that said delegates shall be learned and expert in all the occult mysteries of the three Z's, as contained in the diagonal found under the roots of Mount Ararat, whereby said delegates can exhibit to perfection all the art and science of log-rolling, wire-pulling, button-holding, back scratching, elbow-tickling, fisticuffing, under-ground burrowing, and all kinds of wood-chucking, as will tend to sustain the present well-earned reputation of the third branch of the Legislature"; and-lampooning the Presidential election that year with an approving nod to Zachary Taylor and a wink at the "Salt River" of political iniquity and defeat-"To grant said Society the exclusive right to build a dam across Salt River, clear out the stream,...in order to facilitate the great drive of scrubby, shaky, crooked, conkusy, rift-cracked, sap-stained, black-knotted, bollow-butted, rotten-hearted, worm-eaten, and defunct politicians who will go with a rush to the head of Salt river, March 4, 1848, when old Zack is borne into the White House at Washington..." The resolutions are followed by an extract from an unpublished poem on the Aroostook War, "in the possession of the Grand Hunilihodus of the Antiquarian Society." Carter, a Lebanon, New Hampshire importer and wholesale dealer of "British, French, German and American Fancy Goods" ranging from hosiery and gloves to brushes, ivory combs, silver ware, buttons, and imported cigars. The large wood engraved illustration at the head depicts a horse-drawn carriage passing by the business on a tree-lined road. The sale, written in ink, records the sale of the following goods to "M. Sawyer S. Jones": overalls; collars; beads; ivory combs; and gilt buttons. Measures approx. 9.5" by 8.5
