Description
Berne: Chez la Nouvelle Societe Typographique,, 1783.. Rare Early Account of Cook's Final Voyage The second French-language edition, published a year after the first, of Zimmermann's firsthand account of Cook's third voyage. The text has been corrected and reset for this edition. Zimmermann was coxswain on the Discovery during Cook's third voyage, and kept a detailed journal despite strict orders to the contrary. His account first appeared in Germany in 1781, titled Reise Um Die Welt Mit Capitain Cook, but it was suppressed in that country at the behest of the British government (which would spend another three years preparing the official account). A French-language edition was published surreptitiously in Berne, Switzerland in 1782, with this second Berne edition and a second German edition appearing in 1783. Dutch editions appeared in 1784 and 1791, and a Russian version was published at St. Petersburg in 1786. As Rodney Davidson wrote of the early printings of Zimmermann: "all these editions are exceedingly rare. It is hard to predict the realisation price for a copy if one were to come into the open market, as competition between collectors would be very keen." This is one of the scarcest of all the Cook voyage accounts. Zimmermann's narrative was the first description of the third voyage to appear on the continent, and as one of two accounts first published in 1781 (a full three years before the official account), it may well be the first description of the voyage (and, therefore, of the Hawaiian islands) ever published. It includes an eyewitness account of Cook's death. Beaglehole calls Zimmermann's work "valuable for his lower-deck impressions of the character of Cook," and Holmes commends his "ingenuousness and charm....His appreciation of Cook's character deserves to rank with that of Samwell." A rare, unauthorized account of Cook's third voyage. Modern half calf and paper boards, spine gilt, raised bands, gilt leather label. Light shelf wear. Dark stain in upper gutter of pp.120-150 and 178-200, closed tear in p.161, just grazing a letter. Very good. BEAGLEHOLE III, p.ccvi. BEDDIE 1630. DAVIDSON, p.66. FORBES 59. HOLMES 44 (note). KROEPELIEN 1364. O'REILLY & REITMAN 424. SABIN 106436. BAGNALL 6227. HOCKEN, p.20.

Description
[Baltimore]. , 1827.. A tract seeking to generate support around the candidacy of John Quincy Adams in the 1828 presidential election, published by the pro-Adams convention met in Maryland in 1827. The address principally defends Adams against the criticisms levelled at him by supporters of Andrew Jackson published by the Maryland pro-Jackson convention from earlier in the year, in particular the accusation that Adams was elected against the will of the people in 1824. The final three pages lists the attendees of the convention, organized by county. Only five copies located by OCLC. Dbd. Contemporary ownership inscription on titlepage. Some tanning and foxing. Good plus. SABIN 45291. SHOEMAKER 29895.
