Description
London: Michael Joseph, 1953. Dear Mr. Bricusse..." A Superb Noël Coward Association Copy with Telegram and Telephone Message to Leslie Bricusse COWARD, Noël Coward. The Noël Coward Song Book. With an introduction and annotations by Noël Coward. Illustrated in colour and black & white by Gladys Calthrop. Frontispiece portrait by Clemence Dane. London: Michael Joseph, [1953]. First edition. Large quarto (11 1/4 x 8 7/8 inches; 285 x 225 mm.). [1-8], 9-314, [1], [1, blank] pp. Illustrated throughout with musical notation, photographic reproductions, and five inserted color plates including the frontispiece portrait. Publisher's original quarter yellow cloth over gray buckram boards, front cover decoratively stamped in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, pale gray endpapers, top edge stained yellow. A near fine copy in the original pictorial dust jacket, jacket moderately worn at spine ends and corners with a few small chips and short tears, but remarkably bright and attractive overall. Warmly inscribed by Noël Coward on the title-page: "To Leslie Bricusse with all my very best wishes Noël Coward" An exceptional theatrical association copy linking two generations of British musical theater sophistication: Noël Coward, the defining wit and songwriter of the inter-war and postwar stage, and Leslie Bricusse, whose later successes would include Stop the World - I Want to Get Off, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Doctor Dolittle, Victor/Victoria, and the Academy Award-winning "Talk to the Animals." Laid into the volume are two remarkable ephemeral survivals documenting direct contact between Coward and Bricusse: An original British Post Office telegram addressed to: "LESLIE BRICUSSE QUEENS THEATRE SHAFTESBURY AVENUE W1" Reading: "DEAR MR BRICUSSE YES AM VERY INTERESTED COULD YOU PLEASE COME SAVOY HOTEL ROOM 312 NEXT MONDAY 21ST YOURS SINCERELY = NOEL COWARD" An original Swiss telephone message slip from the Société de Banque Suisse, Lausanne, dated "5th January 70," noting: "Mr Noel Coward asks you to ring him back please..." The inclusion of both the telegram and telephone memorandum transforms the volume from a merely inscribed copy into a small archive of personal and professional communication between Coward and Bricusse during the later years of Coward's life. The Noël Coward Song Book remains the great collected monument to Coward's songwriting career, gathering together the lyrics and music to many of his most celebrated compositions, including material from Bitter Sweet, Private Lives, Conversation Piece, Ace of Clubs, Pacific 1860, and his famed cabaret repertoire. The volume captures Coward at the height of his reputation as dramatist, composer, performer, and arbiter of transatlantic sophistication. An outstanding association copy with unusually intimate accompanying material connecting two major figures of twentieth-century British musical theater.

A new preface was written by Crane for this edition and new illustrations on the preface and title pages. Walter Crane's color illustrations for these three children's stories, many full-page, with decorative borders and vignettes throughout. Considered to contain some of the best illustrations ever rendered by Walter Crane on Japanese Vellum, thus increasing the clarity and improving the color tone. "Walter Crane (1845-1915) was an English artist and illustrator. He is primarily known for his illustrations of the Faerie Queen as well as numerous children's books, however he also worked on designs for political pamphlets and even wallpaper, ceramic tiles and other decorative art. During the 1800s Walter Crane was considered Britain's greatest socialist artist, and he was asked to illustrate many socialist publications. However his best work was non-political in nature. He earned a good living doing book illustrations, and he was especially in demand as an illustrator of children's books such as nursery rhymes, fables and alphabet books. His drawings often featured child in the garden motifs, and were extremely influential in shaping the direction of children's illustrated literature, along with his collaborator, the printer Edmund Evans. Despite his versatility as an artist and the wide range of his subject matter, Crane was always best known as a children's book illustrator. His contemporaries included fellow illustrators Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott.

1835. First Edition. CROCKETT, David. An Account of Col. Crockett's Tour to the North and Down East. Philadelphia: Carey and Hart, 1835. Octavo, original brown cloth, mounted spine label. Housed in a custom half morocco slipcase. $1800.First edition of Davy Crockett's second autobiography intended to appeal to Western voters and encourage them to back William Henry Harrison in the 1836 presidential election, with frontispiece portrait, in original cloth.""Davy [Crockett]'s second autobiographical work, 'The Tour,' was a Whig campaign device. This break with the Democrats made him an important person and a valuable asset to the Whigs. For he was a real coonskin Democrat, a native Tennessean, and an authentic Westerner sent to Congress on the Jackson ticket but at bitter odds with Old Hickory. Clever Whig politicians began to exploit his eccentricities, his canebrake waggery, and his anti-Jackson spleen in order to big for the western vote. Thus, the Davy Crockett myth was created in Washington for partisan purposes… The Whigs decided to put Davy on tour as a campaign stunt; and he seems never to have realized how grossly he was exploited. 'The Tour' was probably written by Augustin S. Clayton, a Georgia Congressman, but doubtless under Davy's eye an with Davy's help. In any case, 'The Tour' was used as a Whig campaign document"" (Quarterly Review). The mythmaking is evident in the text: ""I had braved the lonely forests of the West; I had shouldered the warrior's rifle in the far South; but the North and the East I had never seen. I seemed to like members of Congress who came from these parts, and wished to know what kind of constituents they had."" Curiously, the work mixes the narrator's voice—that of an articulate, fairly civilized politician—with an introduction penned in a rougher style. The latter would come to be associated with many of Crockett's most popular writings (""Some persons tickle up their fancies to the scribbling point, and then their pen goes like a fiddler's elbow. I like real life, that makes a book jump out of the press like a new dollar from a mint-hopper. Some likes to use up the big I's, and write all about themselves; and I reckon it isn't easy to quit that, particularly when one is uncommon hard pushed to come out a second time""). Howes also supports a secondary authorship: ""Has been ascribed to his friend, Augustin S. Clayton, of Georgia"" (Howes C896). Sabin 17565. Faint marginal dampstain, light foxing to interior, a bit of wear, staining, and toning to cloth. A very good copy.

Description
Washington, DC, 1886. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This one-page letter to G. S. Faucher Esq. of West Winstead, Connecticut is written on letterhead that reads "United States National Museum / Under Direction Of / The Smithsonian Institution." It is dated October 28, 1886 and signed by G. Brown Goode as the Smithsonian's Assistant Director. The letter is enclosed in an official United State National Museum - Smithsonian Institution penalty envelope and has been canceled with a duplex Washington, DC postmark dated November 1, 1886. The envelope also bears a double-circle Smithsonian postmark-like handstamp also dated November 1. In nice shape with a little minor toning to the envelope. Goode's letter reads in part: "I have cancelled the duplicate order for the report of the Smithsonian Institution of 1884. I also learn that in addition to the copy of the report for 1884, sent to you by Prof Baird, copies of the reports for 1875, 1881 and 1882 have now been forwarded to you. Trusting that you will consider these as fair equivalent for you the idol, and hoping that you will find them matters of interest. I am yours respectfully, G Brown Goode Assistant Director." . Goode, an ichthyologist by training, was appointed to be the Assistant Curator of the National Museum in 1873 and served as such until 1877 when his title was changed to Curator. In 1881, he was promoted to become the Assistant Director of the Smithsonian Institution under the "Prof Baird" of this letter, Spencer Fullerton Baird, the Smithsonian's Secretary. He simultaneously served as the Assistant Secretary of the National Museum. Today the U. S. National Museum is known as the Museum of Natural History, but then it was housed in what is now the Smithsonian's Arts and Industries Building. Goode soon became the leading figure in American museum theory and display, revising the museum's mission to educate visitors with its displays, not to simply entertain them. He organized the exhibits within standardized mahogany cases carefully and specifically placed with the museums large open halls lit with natural light from skylights, window and door whose glass was frosted to diffuse the direct sunlight falling on the collections. By 1883, he had replace all of the old gas lighting with electric fixtures and installed an unusual air circulation system that improved air flow. By the time of Goode's death, the Smithsonian was renowned for its premier collection of anthropological artifacts, art works, historical objects and natural history specimens which was on par with the museums in Europe. (For more information, see "Smithsonian History" at the online Smithsonian Institution Archives.) A rather scarce signed letter by Goode. At the time of listing, nothing similar is for sale in the trade, and the Rare Book Hub show no similar items have ever appeared at auction. OCLC lists no similar items in institutional holdings, however many are held by the Smithsonian Institution Archives. .

Description
Hardcover, 10" x 7.5", 130 pp., pocket at rear, illustrated throughout. Under vernacular dust jacket made from pink & black bird-print wrapping paper, taped to itself, with handwritten paper label to front panel. Clean & solid binding, very good. Dust jacket torn at edges including a bit of loss at rear edges, but still in good condition with bright vibrant colors. There are things in the rear pocket, but they are kind of under the jacket and I haven't taken them out to examine them--they mostly look like tissue patterns but I don't know if they are original to the book. Homemade dust jackets come in many varieties. This one in particular is quite charming and would be a fun addition to any collection of vernacular bindings or jackets.
