Description
New York: Published by John S. Taylor, 1836. Second edition. Good. Following the Boston edition of 1833. Octavo. 216 pp. Lacking flyleaves, otherwise complete. Contemporary teal cloth with spine titled in gilt. Foxing and some wear to corners. Contemporary paper numerical label to upper board. Some foxing throughout. A Good+ copy of one of the cornerstone works of the abolitionist movement, in which Child exposes the violence of chattel slavery in the South as well as the violence of systemic racism in the North. "When Lydia Maria Child issued her Appeal in Favor of that Class of Americans Called Africans, she had been enjoying dizzying popularity for almost a decade. Child had burst upon the literary scene at the age of twenty-two, with her novel Hobomok, whose double violation of the taboos against miscegenation and divorce had simultaneously scandalized and titillated her contemporaries...North American Review ranked her highest among women writers of the day, and the most prestigious publishers vied for her favor" (Karcher). This work of overt social activism made sense for a writer with an elevated platform. She now had the ability to voice her views about the stories of women and of enslaved people being intertwined, with both groups defined by white men "in terms of ownership" whose positions within "economic transaction reveal the perversion of paternity into the profits of bondage" and the denial of human dignity (Sanchez-Eppler). Within the work, Child forces her readers to confront the horrors of the Middle Passage and the ongoing violence of hereditary chattel slavery; but she does not only take the South to task. The North, too, participates in systemic racism; and she argues that equality can only come by ending anti-miscegenation laws; eliminating the segregation of public spaces such as churches, schools, theaters, and transportation; providing equal access to education and employment; and addressing all levels of racist attitudes. Outrage among white readers was loud and widespread, and some predicted the end of Child's career. The Boston Athenaeum revoked her library card to prevent future research; additionally, "her Boston benefactors, scared off by their association with a newly born radical abandoned her, and family and friends who did not share her abolitionists stance avoided her" (Bergren). Yet her work sparked among activists a new dialogue about abolition and white supremacy; and it drew a number of influential people including Charles Sumner and Wendell Phillips to a cause that would continue to build strength. "From this point on, Child's career was defined by her participation in the anti-slavery movement" (Bergren). BAL 3116. Sabin 12711. Good.

Description
London: Jonathan Cape, 1965. First edition. Fine/Fine. First printing. Second state binding without the gilt gun to the upper board. A Fine copy in like dust jacket. Pinpoint smudge to closed edge of text block, otherwise an excellent example. Price-clipped dust jacket clean and vibrant. A very attractive copy. Published a year after Ian Fleming's death, The Man with the Golden Gun is the final James Bond novel written by its original creator. Fleming's health rapidly decreased while writing the book and though he finished a draft of the novel in 1964, he never fully re-worked it. After Fleming's death, the novel was published in the United Kingdom and then serialized in The Daily Express and Playboy. Ironically, in this novel, Bond is presumed dead before returning to London. He's been brainwashed by the Soviet Union and attempts to assassinate "M." After regaining his senses, Bond is sent to the Caribbean to assassinate Francisco Scaramanga, known as "the Man with the Golden Gun.". Fine in Fine dust jacket.

Description
[Utrecht, 1857. Illustrated broadside, 17 x 13.75 inches, with large illustration at top printed in black, and title and body text printed in gold in three columns. Old folds, minor toning around edges, a few short closed tears, two small repairs on verso to short line separations, light surface wear and soiling. Overall very good. A rare lamplighters' address, akin to the American postal carrier's address, issued by the "Lantaarnopstekers" of Utrecht on New Year's Day, 1857. The illustration at top shows a lamplighter in the midst of his work, carrying a ladder and basket of tools to the next street lamp in a handsome Utrecht neighborhood. The remainder of the broadside, consisting of the lengthy title and three-column poem in six eight-line stanzas, is printed entirely in gold. The poem is, naturally, almost entirely a celebration of light, the sun, and fire. The work is dedicated to the mayor, aldermen, and residents of Utrecht, located in the central part of the Netherlands. OCLC reports two slightly later examples of New Year's addresses by night watchmen, but nothing from lamplighters.

Carmel, New York, 1889. Vellum diploma from Drew Female College awarding the "Mistress of Art" degree to J. Alice Griswold after completing the "Scientific Course of Studies" prescribed by the institution. Ribbon runs the entire page vertically and is fully intact. In Fair condition. Vellum shows moderate creasing and foxing throughout. Shelved at Rockville Room J (MW Shelf). Drew Female Seminary (often informally called "Drew Female College") was a 19th-century Methodist-affiliated girls' school located in Carmel, New York, established in the 1840s to provide advanced education for young women at a time when female academies were expanding across the Northeast. Named for benefactor Daniel Drew, the seminary offered instruction beyond basic schooling, including literature, languages, music, moral philosophy, and other subjects designed to prepare women for teaching, refinement, and intellectual development within the era's social expectations. Like many female seminaries of the period, it combined religious instruction with academic coursework and operated during a time when women's higher education was gradually gaining acceptance prior to the rise of coeducational colleges and women's universities later in the century. 1409581.
