London: Printed for the Author, and for F. and C. Rivington, 1799. First edition. Five octavo volumes bound in two (9 1/8 x 5 1/2 inches; 233 x 140 mm). With the complete run of 180 engraved color-plates, many heightened in gum arabic. 1, 2, or 3 leaves of description for each plate. This book was originally issued in 60 monthly parts, each illustrated with three plates, between 1799 and 1804. The present set is bound without the title-pages for volumes III, IV and V. It has the "Linnean Arrangement" index for all five volumes, but not of the other indexes. With two errata slips tipped in for plates XXXI and CXIX. Contemporary full straight-grain red morocco. A few plates in volume II a bit toned. Overall a very good set with beautiful images. Edward Donovan (1768-1837), English travel writer and amateur zoologist, founded the London Museum and Institute of Natural History and authored a number of works of natural history in the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-centuries, including this well-known illustrated survey of British insects. "At its best, the zoological art of [the nineteenth century] is distinguished by tightness of drawing and brightness of colouring. . . . The remarkably industrious Edward Donovan typifies the mentality of the still largely dilettante world of descriptive zoology in the early nineteenth century. . . . In several multi-colume books he described and illustrated the birds, fishes, insects, and molluscs of the British Isles" (S. Peter Dance, The Art of Natural History). Nissen 1147. - Agassiz II, 253, 9. - Engelmann S. 669. HBS 69307. $3,250.

Description
Boston: Boston Book and Art, 1970. Third edition. Text in English and Swedish. Housed in the scarce original publisher's printed cardboard box. The exhibition catalog for Andy Warhol's first European museum show, held at the Moderna Museet from February through March, 1968. The catalog was designed by Kasper König, who commissioned noted photographer Billy Name and a then-teenage Stephen Shore to document Warhol's life and work at The Factory on 231 East 47th Street. The resultant publication resembles an artist's book as much as an exhibition catalog, and is composed of (intentionally crude) reproductions of Warhol's most iconic works alongside snapshots of the Factory taken by Name. The catalog was widely influential, particularly on Japanese photography of the late 1960s and 1970s Book: Near Fine in perfect-bound wrappers, with a single faint vertical crease on the spine and minute wear on the corners. Front wrapper bright and colorful with no fading. Box: Very Good condition, with light soil and wear overall, and one flap detached (but present).

Description
Berkeley: Irwin-Patton Company, 1907. Near fine.. Lithograph map, approximately 15 x 28 inches. Folded. Two contemporary manuscript annotations. Very minor wear at edges and faint toning; one small separation at fold point. Large, early 20th-century real estate map showing a proposed subdivision on some thirty blocks in North Berkeley, now adjacent to University Village. The map is oriented with due north corresponding roughly to the left edge, with San Pablo Avenue at the bottom edge, Cedar and Hopkins Streets running vertically at right, Santa Fe Avenue running diagonally toward the upper left corner, and with a plethora of streets name after the Ivy League: Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, and Yale, with Cornell running perpendicular to them. Interestingly, while this area was developed roughly as delineated here, it is not exact, and many of the street names are also different (Yale Street is today's Gilman Street, for instance). Docketed in ink on the verso, "Regents Park #2 & #4". Not in OCLC.

Description
1950. Korean War photographs early 1950s document U.S. Army combat conditions, including the presence of African American soldiers serving in integrated units following the 1948 desegregation of the U.S. military, and record frontline medical treatment and logistical coordination during the opening phase of the conflict. Initiated after June 27, 1950, when President Harry S. Truman committed U.S. forces to support South Korea against North Korean invasion, the war produced extensive casualties and established the first major armed confrontation of the Cold War. One image shows a wounded American soldier on a gurney receiving immediate aid from fellow troops, while another depicts a group of American and Korean soldiers assembled among supplies, tarps, and canisters, preparing for continued operations. The photographs provide direct visual evidence of battlefield care, exhaustion, and multinational coordination under active combat conditions. Group of two large format silver gelatin photographs mounted on original photographer boards, each measuring approximately 16.5 x 20.25 inches. One photograph bears a pasted label reading "First Aid" in the lower right corner. The images capture field medical response and supply organization, with figures positioned in active and candid arrangements. Composition emphasizes scale and immediacy, with close attention to facial expression, posture, and environmental detail. Mounted presentation indicates intended display or press use. Produced during a conflict often termed the "Forgotten War" due to its position between World War II and the Vietnam War in public memory, these photographs align with early Cold War military engagement and the operational realities of a newly integrated U.S. armed force. The presence of African American soldiers within frontline units reflects the implementation of desegregation policies under combat conditions, offering material for the study of race, military policy, and wartime experience. Edge wear and foxing to mounting boards; one photograph with a tear approximately 5 inches at top and the other with a tear approximately 2 inches at bottom. Overall good condition.

Description
Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1938. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Original dark blue cloth, slightly worn at head and foot of spine, otherwise an excellent copy. First American edition. A French writer and doctor, Louis-Ferdinand Destouches (1894-1961) adopted the pseudonym Céline when he wrote his first novel, Voyage au bout de la nuit. He here looks back on his Paris childhood, depicting the tale of a young boy struggling with his parents and life. These first two novels are a nihilistic vision of human suffering, failure and pessimism. Céline wrote three virulently anti-Semitic pamphlets between 1937 and 1941, and after WWII was accused of Nazi collaboration. He fled France to live in Germany, joining members of the Vichy Government and other French collaborators. While there, he treated refugees of the regime. Convicted in absentia in a civil court in France to one year of imprisonment and declared a national disgrace, Céline did not return to France until after his pardon in 1951. Céline’s later works were badly received, as his reputation as a writer had been shadowed his anti-Semitism and anti-Communism. He is now generally regarded as one of the most important and influential, as well as controversial, twentieth century French novelists.

Description
Studio of L. Gutmann in Vienna. From the collection of the distinguished American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne (b. 1934). Slightly worn and soiled. Otto Tressler was a celebrated German film actor who appeared in 46 films between 1915-1963, including "Lover Divine," "Castles in the Air," and "Sissi." The Honig family emigrated from Vienna to England in September of 1938 and then to the United States in 1939. The family papers are held at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. "Horne had a voice of extraordinary range, rich and tangy in timbre, with a stentorian chest register and an exciting top... In concert she once achieved the feat of singing in a single programme Rossini arias and Brünnhilde's Immolation Scene, proof of her exceptional versatility. Throughout her lengthy career she was an admired recitalist, singing lieder, mélodies, and Spanish and American songs with equal aplomb." Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online.
