Very good +
Description
Window Rock, Arizona: Office of Navajo Land Administration, The Navajo Tribe, 1976. Very good +. 42" x 70½". Blueprint map. Very good plus with minimal wear, a few tiny splits at intersections and a couple of border chips not impacting the map; several handwritten notations in ink. This is a rare and enormous map depicting Navajo Nation lands as of 1976. It's three and a half feet tall and nearly 6 feet wide and provides little information as to its purpose; secondary sources don't help much either. The handwritten notations may provide a clue. Several are scattered throughout and represent "Navajo AML sites." AML stands for "abandoned mine lands" and 1977 saw the passage of the Surface Mine Control and Reclamation Act (SMRCA). That legislation created the Navajo AML/UMTRA department which worked on reclamation of abandoned mine sites to protect the public health, safety and the environment. Hence, we think it possible that this map was actually used in anticipation of SMRCA to begin identifying Navajo AML areas. Rare: OCLC locates only 1 copy.

Description
New York: Howell, 1870. Carte de viste portrait on larger mount, with printed studio imprint “Howell, 807 & 869 B’way” on mount. 2 ½ x 4 inches. Excellent condition and contrast.. Three-quarter bust portrait of Stowe, facing slightly left, wearing a dark dress with ruffled trim and a cameo brooch at the collar; her hair arranged in tight ringlets framing the face, one of at least two poses from this sitting that were published. The Broadway address dates Howell’s New York studio operation to the post–Civil War period. Stowe, author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852), published more than thirty books including Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp (1856), The Minister’s Wooing (1859), and Oldtown Folks (1869). Uncle Tom’s Cabin sold an estimated 300,000 copies in its first year in the United States and was widely credited with intensifying sectional debate over slavery in the decade preceding the Civil War. Stowe lectured extensively in the United States and Britain in the 1850s and remained a public literary and reform figure into the Reconstruction era; cartes de visite such as this one were often sold as keepsakes for touring lecturers. Stowe’s likeness was reproduced by multiple studios during and after the height of her fame. A strong New York imprint of one of the most widely recognized American women of the nineteenth century.

Description
Berlin: F.A. Herbig, 1832. FIRST EDITION. Modern calf-backed marbled boards. Foxing throughout due to quality of paper. First edition. Hecker (1795-1850), celebrated epidemiologist and historian of medicine, was professor of medical history at the Friedrich Wilhelms Universitat. Der schwarze Tod was his first important work on the history of the great epidemics of the Middle Ages. Hecker also translated Harvey on the circulation, and wrote on the "dancing mania" and the "English sweats." The volume further contains a historical document describing the persecution, interrogation, and confession of Jews from Montreux, Evian, and other localities, who were accused of causing the Black Death of 1348 by poisoning drinking water and food. The defendants (one a famous surgeon from Thonon) are identified by name, residence, and scene of crime. Each admitted guilt after torture, and they were sentenced to death by burning, hanging, and other methods. These interrogations served as precedent for all later pogroms.

New York: J.S. Ogilvie, 1888. Full Description: MOONEY, James. The Trail of the Barrow;. Or, The Brother's Revenge. By James Mooney of the Firm of Mooney & Boland, the Detectives. New York: J.S. Ogilvie, 1888. "Favorite edition". Octavo (7 1/4 x 5 inches; 182 x 125 mm). [2], [7]-216, [2, ads] pp. These books seem to be rare on the market. Publisher's original marron cloth. Front board elaborately stamped in black. Spine stamped in black and gilt. Floral endpapers. Some minor rubbing to cloth. Binding slightly skewed. Inner hinges cracked. Leaves with some uniform toning. Overall a very good copy. "In the 1860's James Mooney and John Boland founded the Mooney & Boland Detective Agency and by 1882 they had opened a Chicago office with James Mooney in charge. He would spend the rest of his life living in Chicago and became a prominent citizen. It would be Mooney & Boland that Chicago playwright and real estate developer, Samuel Eberly Gross retained to prove that Edmund Rostand had plagiarized Gross's Merchant Prince of Cornville, for Cyrano de Bergerac, an endeavor in which the detectives were quite successful... While the Pinkerton detective agency was probably better known, Mooney & Boland ultimately became the bigger of the two and there was a lively competition... Chicago-based Belford, Clarke, which was believed to be the largest literary publisher in the country, began their Mooney & Boland Detective Series based on true cases that James Mooney had solved... The true detective mysteries usually had associations that would seem familiar to anyone who even causally read the daily newspapers. If the story wasn't directly based on an actual case as the Mooney and Boland Detective Series was, then the author would attempt to invoke some type of connection to someone or something that was actually real to achieve story verisimilitude."
