Description
1897. (#173515) TRACHSEL, Albert. Les Fêtes réeles. 12 ff. With a portrait of the author by F. Hodler engraved by H. Forestier, and 50 large numbered heliotype plates by Trachsel in various tones of black, blue, sepia, and violet on white. Oblong folio, 357 x 468 mm, Bound in publisher's red three quarter cloth over boards by Villain. Paris: Société du Mercure de France, 1897. A fine copy of this incredibly scarce suite of large fantastic architectural designs by the visionary Swiss symbolist artist, poet and architect, Albert Trachsel (1863-1929), a contemporary of the young Picasso, with whom he exhibited at the Galeries Serrurier, Paris (1905). This curious work is specially mentioned by Bénézit, and contains a prologue in verse by Mathias Morhardt, as well as an historical and interpretive preface by Trachsel. The statement of limitation on the verso of the half title reads: "De cet album il a été tiré 100 exemplaires sur papier courant et 40 exemplaires sur papier impérial du Japon." The present copy is one of the regular copies and unnumbered. One plate and the table of contents spotted, but overall a fresh and appealing copy. OCLC lists 6 copies in the US: Columbia, Yale, LOC, NGA, Wolfsonian, Getty and 5 copies in Europe.

Description
1868. BENSON, William. Principles of the Science of Colour concisely stated to aid and promote their useful Application in the Decorative Arts. x, 48 pp., illustrated with 6 uncoloured lithographs, 4 text illustrations of which 2 are hand-coloured and 5 plates with mounted coloured circle patterns. 4to, 275 x 210 mm., bound in contemporary morocco-backed cloth, spine rubbed. London: Chapman & Hall, 1868-[1876]. First edition, second issue, of this elegant and unusual book. The colour plates in this issue are the same as in the first except that instead of being hand-coloured they are made of circular coloured paper samples mounted by hand. "Benson, an architect, published his unique cube-shaped color solid in 1868. Benson's cube model stands on end with a black to white vertical axis ... Benson's elegant diagrams, along with hand-colored plates, show how the cube may be sliced to reveal the colors that form the interior. He cites Mayer, Runge, and Chevreul as sources for his theories, but criticizes Field as being "too hasty." - Color Documents No. 27. Herbert also comments on the book: "Author's color standard based on a cube tipped on a point, and incorporating the then recent theories of Maxwell and Helmholtz" ("A Color Bibliography, II" in Yale Library Gazette, 1977, p. 143). An unusually clean copy of this work which is usually found with substantial foxing, tear in the gutter of one text page not effecting the text. With a prize bookplate and gilt stamp on the front cover. Birren Catalogue No. 34.

Description
France, late 12th century. 176 x 132 mm. (7 x 5 1/4"). Single column, 18 lines in a protogothic hand (text on one side only). Rubrics in red, "Liber" in upper margin in red. Recto and verso with scribblings by later hands, the name "Simon Pivante" clearly visible on recto, but the others illegible. ◆Recovered from a binding and thus with obvious staining, folds, and rubbing, a couple lines at top and bottom and a few other words here and there too rubbed to make out, but by and large still very legible and in a pleasing hand. This leaf is primarily of interest for its content, containing a rare example of Anastasius Bibliothecarius' "Historia Ecclesiastica" of the Byzantine Church (also known as the "Chronographia tripartita"), compiled from the works of the near-contemporary Greek authors Theophanes, Nicephorus, and Syncellus. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, Anastasius Bibliothecarius (ca. 810-79) "learned Greek from Greek monks, and obtained an unusual education for his era, so that he appears to be the most learned ecclesiastic of Rome in the barbaric period of the ninth century." He earned the moniker "Bibliothecarius" from his appointment as librarian of the Roman Church, a position he held during the reign of popes Adrian II (867-72) and John VIII (872-82). It is possible that Anastasius was also the same figure elected antipope in 855 (as recorded in at least one contemporary chronology), but historians disagree on the validity of this identification. Anastasius' work appears to be extremely rare in the marketplace..

Description
Boston: The Office of the Woman's Journal, 1871. First thus. Near Fine. No. 2 of the Woman's Suffrage Tracts printed by The Woman's Journal of the American Woman Suffrage Association. Original printed self-wraps stitched at spine. Collates 24, [4]: complete, including the unpaginated Constitution, list of officers, and ad for the Woman's Journal. Light soiling to wraps; small closed tear to upper corner of pages 9-10 not affecting text. In all, a lovely survivor of an important work, marking one wing of the women's movement branching off on its own and developing its distinct platform for promoting equality. While the American Equal Rights Association and the NWSA's periodical The Revolution printed earlier versions of this tract (1867 and 1868 respectively), both of which are listed on OCLC, the 1871 Woman's Suffrage Tract printing is the only one to contain rear material on the newly founded organization's Constitution, officers, and journal. The only copy on the market, this edition was not located in OCLC. At the 1867 Constitutional Convention of New York, civil rights activist George William Curtis delivered a speech connecting women's rights to the Declaration of Independence, and questioning contemporary legal readings of the word "man" which he asserts "undoubtedly includes woman as much as the word mankind." Arguing against archaic systems in which "woman is absorbed into man as a social inferior and subordinate," Curtis urges "the enfranchisement of women on the ground that whatever political rights men have, women have equally" and are only denied them. Unsurprisingly, a number of organizations gravitated toward Curtis' message, reproducing it under their own imprints. And so it was with the American Woman Suffrage Association. Having split in 1869 from the National Woman Suffrage Association led by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, the American Woman Suffrage Association narrowed its focus solely to voting rights under the guidance of Julia Ward Howe, Lucy Stone, and Mary Livermore. Whereas the NWSA sought equality for women in multiple spaces (education, employment, marriage, suffrage), the AWSA opted solely to emphasize enfranchisement of women. The vote, the AWSA leaders asserted, could only be accomplished with single-minded commitment; and only its achievement would open the door to those other spaces. Just as the NWSA had a voice via its newspaper The Revolution, the AWSA founded The Woman's Journal in 1870. And, though the Revolution printed its version of Curtis' speech in 1868, the Woman's Journal opted to pull Curtis' into their own orbit, placing their mark on his words by attaching them to the Constitution of a new regional branch and with advertisements for their new periodical. Notably, the rear "Opinion of the Press" section features Curtis' own assessment of the journal as a cornerstone for readers "who wish to keep the issue clear from entangling with other reforms" and as "indispensible to those who would truly understand the character of the movement and the measure of its progress." An important legal argument, here serving as a key example of effective branding. Krichmar 262 (for first appearance of 1867). Near Fine.

Pair of Manuscript Diaries kept by an unidentified United States Navy sailor, a machinist, including accounts of his service aboard USS Octopus, an early US Navy Submarine, 1907-1911

Description
2 diaries, small quarto, 247 pages, plus blanks, and pasted in clippings and pictures, original plain paper wraps, wrappers, worn, badly chipped, detached, but present, entries in ink, generally clear and legible. Diaries of an early US Navy submariner, a machinist. The diaries discuss his daily shipboard activities, as well as those in his personal life. From the entries we learn that the early submarines were mechanically unreliable, accident prone, and otherwise unsafe, the exhaust fumes, while the Octopus was in operation, were often overpowering. Our diarist was a thirty-year-old, five-year veteran of the Navy, who had been married for a year when the diaries begin, to a woman named Alice, and who was very religious. The diary entries begin July 22, 1907. Our diarist works in in engine rooms, tending and repairing engines. The first ship he mentions is the USS Vesuvius, a dynamite gun cruiser, then operating out of Newport, Rhode Island. The Vesuvius sails for Boston in August where it remains, until orders were given in November to put the Vesuvius out of commission. On December 17, he was discharged from the Navy. The next day, the 18th, our diarist went to Newport where he "got application papers at the Torpedo station." On the 19th he notes that he went to Quincy and "saw Mr. Bowles of the Fore River Ship building Co…." He was employed the next day. By December 23 he was at work at the Fore River Company on the Birmingham (CS-2/CL-2, named for the city of Birmingham, Alabama, was a Chester-class scout cruiser, reclassified a light cruiser in 1920). He was engaged primarily in various aspects of building its engine. Our diarist in the meantime was also sending in applications to the "Newport Torpedo Station." In May 1908 he began working on the North Dakota (USS North Dakota (BB-29) was a Delaware-class battleship). On June 16, 1908, he received word to report at the Torpedo Station that Saturday, our diarists reaction was succinct, "Praise God." "June 18… I gave Mr Battles my notice at 10 am (he called it one weeks notice to avoid having to fire me) quit work at 11 and got laid off before noon. Went out and bought some tools and did some packing this afternoon." "June 20 Fair Staid at the Y.M.C.A. last night. Met Mr. Cruthers on Thames St this morning. Reported for work at 9 am. The chief clerk sent me to Mr. Moore who told me to come in to work Monday morning left my grip of tools in the tool-room. Alice and I went all over the town looking for a tenement and I am dead tired as I slept little last night. We decided on the house at the head of Thames St." "22. Hot. Met Miller this morning went to work at the Torpedo Station this morning. Tested out a new screw machine in the new factory, getting settled at 57 Farewell St…" "July 22 … Roosevelt was at the Training Station today…" In August he rejoins the Navy and is assigned to the Wabash. On September 1st he was given orders to leave the Wabash and "sent to the Hist at Newport" (USS Hist, formerly Thespia, was built in 1895). "Sept 1, 1908 Pease and I got started on piping job…. Told to pack our bags and hammocks to be ready to leave the Wabash at 12 noon to be sent to the Hist at Newport… We went over on the "Wave" and reported on the Torpedo Station, the Hist is not here at present so all I have to do is report once a day and stay ashore until the Hist comes in …" [Sept.] "11 fair. Stood the forenoon watch on the main engine. Cruised around all day. This evening all the submarine men went to the "Yankee" except the Octopus men …" [Sept.] "23. Foggy. This morning Cortney sent me to the "Octopus" I was very much disappointed but trust and pray that it may all come out well. I was sent to take the place of a man that is sick. Today we took out the pistons of the port engine (6 pistons) The "Yankee" ran aground near the "Hen and chickens" light and the submarine men are coming back aboard the Hist." [Sept.] "24 Foggy. Worked on the "Octopus" assembling the port engine. This afternoon we came up and anchored off Fort Rodman the engine makes a fierce racket. I cant make up my mine whether I want to stay on the Octopus or not." [Sept.] 28 Foggy. Got up a 2-30 am got breakfast and caught the Fall River boat "Prascilla" which leaves Newport at 3-45 am Came aboard the Hist about 9 am about 10 am we went up to New Bedford. Airhart and I took some work up to a machine shop. The Cuttle-fish went aground when the tide went down. We put on oil …" [Oct.] 3 Windy to fair. We left Newport at 1 pm I saw Alice on the little pier. Just before dark the "Hist" signaled for us to "stand by" both her boilers are disabled. We anchored off Montauk point." [Oct.] "4. We took the "Hist" in tow this morning for New York came near turning back to Newport" [Oct.] "5 Fair The tow line got foul of the Octopus propellor and we had to come alongside the Hist and send down a diver. We arrived at N.Y. Navy yard about 3 pm…" [Oct.] "6 Fair. Charged batteries. This afternoon we got orders to go to Philadelphia the Scorpion to act as tender, a lot of the men are ashore. We took on oil and got the engines ready. I went up to the shop this morning for a couple of close nippers. Slept aboard the "Octopus." [Oct.] "10. … Today we took off the broken cyl-head and cleaned up… Went ashore at 4-30 pm went to City Hall (fine building) walked down market st and around town …" December 5, 1908 "fair. We made a trial run this afternoon not enough pressure on pumps. Went to the "Granby" and saw the "Kandy Kid." January 15, 1909 "fair. We left the Navy yard about 10 am. We made a dive this afternoon at about 30 feet deep for 1 hour and 15 minutes. My first dive. Anchored and came aboard the Castine about 7 pm I got a letter from Alice just before we left the yard." January 18. Fair. Took greater part of forenoon to get both engines running went from Lamberts Point to Norfolk, from there to York-town hard run, fumes were fierce from a leaky joint, came aboard the Castine about 7-30 pm." January 20, 1909 "Fair. Took leads on No 2 crank-pin this forenoon. The USS Octopus, later designated USS C-1 (SS-9), was the lead ship of her class of submarines built for the United States Navy in the first decade of the 20th century. The C-class submarines were enlarged versions of the preceding B-class, the first American submarines with two propeller shafts. They had a length of 105 feet 3 inches overall, a beam of 13 feet 10 inches and a mean draft of 10 feet 10 inches. They displaced 240 long tons on the surface and 273 long tons submerged. The C-class boats had a crew of 1 officer and 14 enlisted men. They had a diving depth of 200 feet. For surface running, they were powered by two 240-brake-horsepower (179kW) Craig gasoline engines, each driving one propeller shaft. When submerged each propeller was driven by a 115 -horsepower (86kW) electric motor. They could reach 11 knots on the surface and 9 knots underwater. On the surface, the boats had a range of 776 nautical miles at 8.13 knots and 24 nautical miles at 8 knots submerged. The boats were armed with two 18-inch torpedo tubes in the bow. They carried two reloads, for a total of four torpedoes. C-1 was laid down by Fore River Shipbuilding Company in Quincy, Massachusetts, under a subcontract from Electric Boat Company, as Octopus. Octopus was launched on October 4, 1906 sponsored by Miss F. Webster, and commissioned on June 30, 1908, Lieutenant C. E. Courtney in command. She was renamed C-1 on November 17, 1911. Assigned to Submarine Flotilla 2 (SubFlot 2), Octopus operated out of Newport, Rhode Island and New York City until October 9, 1908. Tests and experiments, of both submarine design and the tactical use of her type, continued from Norfolk, Virginia and Newport until she was placed in reserve at Charleston, South Carolina on February 14, 1910. Recommissioned on April 15, the submarine conducted experiments and served as a training vessel at Newport until May 10, 1913. C-1 was reassigned to Submarine Group 1, Torpedo Flotilla, Atlantic Fleet, and from May 29 – December 7 operated out of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. She served in Panamanian waters in training, and later, on patrol during World War I until August 4, 1919, when she was decommissioned at Coco Solo in the Panama Canal Zone. Here, she was sold April 13, 1920.

NICHOLAS MAGAZINE, of Alcott's story about a less common holiday seen in literature, and later incorporated into AUNT JO'S SCRAP BAG. 19. [36 Poems by 36 Haikai Poets]. N.p. C. 1900-1920. 30.4 x 26.5cm volume string-bound Japanese-style, fukuro-toji with olive green brocade covers. The blank title slip is mounted on the top left of the front cover. The inner wrappers are covered in gold-flecked paper and the free endpapers appear to be laid paper. [18] cho with an image of a poet and a poem in Japanese calligraphy on each page for a total of [36] pages. The images are in black with a light wash of peach, green and gray on heavy Japanese paper with a poem and poet’s name in sumi ink. Each one has the same red hanko by the artist, likely Kashō 霞樵. Kashō was one of the pen names of the established calligrapher and painter Ike no Taiga 池大雅 (1723 - 1776) and this could be an ode to his work. The poet depicted on the final page appears to be the haiku poet Hattori Tohō 服部土芳 (1657-1730), a protege of legendary haiku poet Bashō 松尾芭蕉 (1644-94). A delightful rendition of the theme of “36 poems by 36 poets,” done with a whimsical feel. Likely about 1900-1920 by a skilled amateur. Slight wear to covers, string is snapped at top.

Description
Berkeley: Gina Rosenberg, 1977. Fine.. Broadside printing an excerpt from Bloch's book ALL THINGS CONSIDERED, 1976, published by Gina Rosenberg (Berkeley: Gina Rosenberg, 1977). Originally published in French as COMPTE-RENDU 1976, the text offers a feminist critique of the Situationist International and subsequent "pro-situ" movements. "At the center of the alienation of women one finds both their need to submit to men and their criteria, and the contempt that women have for themselves. [...] It is significant that the participants (all men) in the Orientation Debate of the SI never stopped posing the question of the appropriate of their theory by the workers, of the necessary interaction between the theory they formulated and this appropriation, without ever even citing this same question for women." One copy found through OCLC at the University of Kansas. 11" by 17" inch off-pink sheet, printed recto only in blue, and folded in quarters as issued. About fine; crisp, bright, sharp, and vivid.

Description
n.p.: No printer or publisher listed, 1963. Good. Each poster approximately 36 x 57 cm. Modest soiling and wear (a corner tear, a few small scraped areas, etc.) Both stamped in lower right corner: Approved for Bulletin Boards [only the first letter of last word visible on second poster]. Both posters have gun safety messages handprinted in large letters on back side with a black marker: [First poster] "Colorado Hunting Accidents A. Intentional Discharge -- 53% 1. "Sight" Shot - 32.9% 2. Sound Shot -- 67.1 % B. Unintentional Discharge - 47% Discharge 1. Self Inflicted - 57% 2. Shooting Another Person 43% C. Average Results 1. 6 mo. in Hospital 2. $10,000 in BIlls and Lost Wages; [Second poster] "Every Hunter Must Know, Practice and Make Sure Others Know and Practice Safe Gun Handling Techniques !" The first poster mixes up the states governed by Wallace and Barnett (and also misspells Governor twice and Barnett once). The second poster seems like an undated college spoof in poor taste; the first poster is less clearly a spoof but we had no luck figuring out any place where these four speakers appeared serially. The handprinted gun safety message on the back of the first poster suggests Cororado as a location; nothing else on either poster seems to give a hint as to location. An odd pair of intriguing posters which may not have been posted anywhere.

Description
Los Angeles: Oscar Tittman. Near Fine. [1943]. Stapled wraps. [minor wear to extremities, small white smudge on rear cover]. (B&W photographs, one cartoon drawing) 20-page souvenir program booklet for the popular Hollywood revue, "A Screamline Variety Laff Riot," produced, staged, directed and emcee'd by Murray at the El Capitan Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. from 1942 through 1949. Purportedly the longest-running variety revue in the history of American theatre, it was basically a ramped-up vaudeville bill, featuring singers, dancers, comedians, acrobats, and one notable animal act: Daisy the Wonder Dog, pictured on the front cover along with Murray and the real star of the show, scatterbrained comedienne/actress/model Marie Wilson. Wilson is prominently pictured on both the front and rear covers of this program, and gets a page to herself inside (as do Murray himself and "Renfro and Daisy"). The roster of performers in this iteration of the show ("Subject to Change Without Notice"), apart from Wilson, ranges from the forgotten to the obscure (although film buffs will readily recognize actor Jack Mulhall, then past his prime as a movie leading man but still working steadily in small roles and uncredited bits). A few examples: Grace Poggi & Igor (a dance team); Tip, Tap & Toe (an African-American dancing trio); the Hollywood Elderlovelies (a group of seven ladies -- singers, I guess -- who appear from their photo to be in their 50s or 60s); and, most importantly, the acrobatic duo of (Frank) Park & (Bob) Clifford. Why "most importantly"? Because both Park & Clifford have autographed this program, on their featured page, with brief generic inscriptions ("Sincerely") to its one-time owner. (Laugh if you must, but I defy you to find another Park & Clifford-autographed anything.) The peforming dog Daisy, by the way, was the very same dog who was featured in several of the "Blondie" movies of the late 1930s, although the Blackouts was purportedly "the first time [she] has ever been on the stage." And speaking of "Blondie," the last page of the program features a cartoon drawing by Chic Young, depicting Blondie and Dagwood proudly presenting "our little Daisy in person Signed by Associated .

Description
Decatur, Ill.: H. Mueller Mfg. Co., 1904. Very good. Undivided-back postcard; 3 1/2 x 5 1/2; mild age-toning and light wear to edges; in very good condition. From the Exhibit of Water, Gas, and Plumbing Goods at the Palace of Manufactures at the St. Louis World's Fair, the poscard showed the offices and the factory of the H. Mueller Mfg. Co. - founded in 1857 in Decatur, Illinois and known for gunsmithing, plumbing services, and sporting goods. The 1904 St. Louis World's Fair would be the place, where hold-to-light postcards would gain massive fame in the United States as popular souvenirs from the event. With die-cut windows and a hidden translucent layer between two card stock ones, when held up to a lamp or flame, the image magically transformed—windows "illuminated" at night, colors shifte, new hidden figures appeared, and the Moon and the Sun shone brightly.
