Bright gilt, a pleasing & enviable Fine copy of Dickens classic tale, now known to be primarily autobiographical.. xiv, [2], 624 pp. Text & plates quite clean [washed sometime prior?]. Illustrated with frontis, vignette title-page & 38 plates by Hablot K. Browne (Phiz). 8vo. 8-3/8" x 5-1/2" David Copperfield is a novel in the bildungsroman genre, narrated by the eponymous David Copperfield, detailing his adventures in his journey from infancy to maturity. It is also an autobiographical novel: "a very complicated weaving of truth and invention", with events following Dickens's own life. Of the books he wrote, it was his favourite. At first glance, the work is modelled on 18th-century "personal histories" that were very popular, like Henry Fielding's Joseph Andrews or Tom Jones, but David Copperfield is a more carefully structured work. It begins, like other novels by Dickens, with a bleak picture of childhood in Victorian England, followed by young Copperfield's slow social ascent, as he painfully provides for his aunt, while continuing his studies. The novel has a primary theme of growth and change, but Dickens also satirises many aspects of Victorian life. These include the plight of prostitutes, the status of women in marriage, class structure, the criminal justice system, the quality of schools, and the employment of children in factories.

Description
1836. [Slavery & Abolition] CHILD, Lydia Marie. An Appeal in Favor of That Class of Americans Called Africans. New York: Published by John S. Taylor, 1836. Second edition. Illustrated with 2 plates. Coleridge quote on title page. In original blue cloth boards with embossing and gilt to spine. 8vo, 216 pages. Child was a vocal abolitionist, women's rights activist, anti-American expansionist, and proponent of racial equality amongst African and Native Americans. An Appeal in Favor of That Class of Americans Called Africans was the first written by a white woman in support of the immediate emancipation of slaves without compensation to their enslavers. Child begins by writing about the history of the slave trade as well as harrowing stories on it's detrimental and immoral faculties in order to engage readers to action. One illustrated plate showcases shackles and chains used on enslaved individuals. First published in 1833, Child's work was a prominent contribution to the abolitionist movement, and her writing influenced many notable figures, including Harriet Beecher Stowe and Frederick Douglass. Missing frontispiece, some foxing to pages, some wear to covers. Small tear affecting a few words in the fist first sentence on page 127. Binding is tight and text is clean and legible. Overall very good condition.

Anthology of Nineteenth Century American Legal Poetry. xvii, 281 pp. Clark, NJ: Talbot Publishing (an imprint of The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd.), 2017. ISBN-13: 9781616195489. ISBN-10: 1616195487. Hardcover. New. $59.95 * Despite the demands of a practice undertaken without today's modern conveniences--and electricity--many 19th century lawyers and judges in America found the time, and had the inclination, to write poetry. A good deal of it was about the law-clients, cases, trials-even law books-and the affairs of the day. Other poems address timeless themes such as nature, faith and illness. Some were meant to be humorous. Edited by Michael H. Hoeflich, an expert on 19th century American legal practice, this collection, which includes poems by President John Quincy Adams and Supreme Court Justices Joseph Story and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., and a few laymen with an interest in law, offers a window into life in 19th century America as reflected in the practice of law, which by its very nature is entwined in so many stages of life. Includes poetry by John Quincy Adams, David Barker, Irving Browne, William Allen Butler, Francis Dana, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., Sidney Lanier, John Pierpont, George D. Prentice, John Godfrey Saxes, Joseph Story, William Wetmore Story, Eugene Fitch Ware, and many others. MICHAEL H. HOEFLICH is the John H. & John M. Kane Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Kansas School of Law. He holds degrees from Haverford College, Cambridge University and Yale Law School. He taught at the University of Illinois from 1980-1988, was dean of the Syracuse University College of Law from 1988-1994, and was dean at the University of Kansas School of Law from 1994-2000. Hoeflich is the author or editor of 15 books including Sources of the History of the American Law of Lawyering (2007), Legal Publishing in Antebellum America (2010), The Law in Postcards & Ephemera 1890-1962 (2012) and more than 115 articles. He is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, a member of the American Antiquarian Society and the Kansas Correspondent of the Selden Society. He was awarded an honorary degree (LL.D.) by Baker University in 2003.
