Description
The Hague: Vaillant, 1758. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary gilt calf-backed pastepaper boards, red edges, green silk marker. Gift inscription on the front flyleaf. A superior copy. First edition of this anti-Jesuit diatribe. The author trumps up a global conspiracy theory in which Jesuits murdered kings and emperors, including an organized plot to kill King Henry IV and the execution of Emperor Kangxi of China by missionaries. The text systematically moves from one country to the next, reporting on the supposed crimes that Jesuit residents or visitors committed there: sedition, fraud, homicide, theft, and libel. Bibliotheca Brasiliense 1316; see Goldsmiths’-Kress 9442.

Description
Amsterdam: Petri vanden Berge, 1658. SECOND EDITION. Illustrated engraved title, woodcut on general title, full-page engraved plate. Half-morocco and marbled boards. Second edition of this rare and valuable treatise by Spain’s most outstanding surgeon of the sixteenth century. First printed by christophe Planin in 1574, this work on curing wounds in the head and other parts of the body was notable in improving the conditions, as well as educating and reforming the technique and ethics, of his profession. In treating wounds and physical deformities, the author provides information on fevers and various treatments for illnesses, including drug-related remedies. Arceo “believed in healing by first intention, described an operative technique for removal of the breast for cancer, and discusses the treatment of talipes with a special shoe of his design” (Leonardo). In addition, he describes a new rhinoplastic method and was the inventor of a special balm. Of particular interest is the chapter devoted to what was later called clubfoot. Arceo provides the details of a case in which he operated on a child’s lame foot by dislocating it and replacing the foot in the correct position. Following the operation the foot is placed in a specially-designed boot which the author invented and which is pictured in the engraved plate. Apparently the procedure worked. Arceo (1493-1575) of Fregenal was so highly esteemed as a surgeon, that patients visited him from foreign countries. His name is preserved to us today in the ‘Balsamun Arcaei’ that he invented. The translation of this book into English by John Read in 1588 (entitled A most excellent and compendious method of curing woundes in the head, and in other partes of the body, London, Thomas East) is notable for containing the first printing of the Hippocratic Oath in English. The book was also translated into German and Dutch. For the 1st edition, seed Durling, 240; see Garrison & Morton, 1757.90; Leonardo, History of Surgery, p. 147; Palau, 15444; Waller, 449; Wellcome, I, 370.

Contemporary red straight-grained morocco, gilt spine and edges. Owner’s not that “Mrs. Donaldson will add this to her stock of Robins, from her very affectionate (initials).”. First editions of these entertaining almanacs for the year 1812 which (as mentioned in all of the printings) was a leap year. Included are a great variety of puzzles, enigmas, riddles, mathematical questions and solutions. One contains arts and sciences for the “Fair Sex”; a number are astronomical almanacs of eclipses, tides, and information on the moon and stars, and ephemera. There are quite a few astrological observations, a chronology of remarkable events throughout history, details of current “inventions,” and newsworthy affairs from around Europe, as well as a discussion of how climate affects behavior. Of special interest is a long poem on the “modern fine lady.”.

First and only edition of the catalogue of Adams' famous and extensive collection of scientific and related books that he bequeathed to Cambridge University library. The preface states: "Professor Adams, who died January 31, 1892, by his will left to the University Library such of his early printed books as the Librarian should select. By the kindness of Mrs Adams, various other books from his Library were added to the bequest and incorporated in the Collection." Many of the incunables include their Hain number. Tipped in is a two-page ALS from Adams to Ramsay, from Pembroke College, inviting Ramsay to either dinner or breakfast at the College during the "present meeting of the British Association." Paris, 1841. Wood engravings throughout. Later cloth-backed marbled boards. Light foxing, otherwise a good copy. First edition, a satirical typology of tourists and travelers. The text opens with a historical account of travel modes across cultures, then describes different kinds of travelers: artists, students, vagabonds, humanitarians, etc. Alhoy goes on to categorize train conductors and ship mates, along with the perils of traveling by train and sea. Each chapter includes humorous anecdotes poking fun at the French. For example, a description of a journey between Paris and Saint-Germain in which the travelers overcome all odds to arrive in time for dinner.

Description
(Los Angeles): Dawson's Book Shop, 1976. First printing. Near fine.. Inscribed first edition of arguably the first serious scholarly study of contemporary graffiti. Sally and Jerry Romotsky's BARRIO CALLIGRAPHY examines the Los Angeles incarnations of Chicano and Chicana plaqueasos or placas. Gathered primarily through fieldwork and interviews, the book documents the alphabets, styles, designs, and methods (including how to decipher messages and markings) particular to the region and placing it among cultural traditions dating back to the 1930s. Part of the Los Angeles Miscellany series from Dawson's Book Shop (which also included among other titles THE ART OF STREET LIGHTING IN LOS ANGELES and MANHOLE COVERS OF LOS ANGELES), it is decidedly scarce - one of just 300 copies. While we've previously handled a couple of other examples, this is the first signed copy we've encountered. A founding document of modern graffiti. 9.5'' x 6''. Original quarter black cloth over photographic salmon-colored boards. No jacket, as issued. 80 pages. Inscribed by the authors on the front free endpaper: "To Bill / with love / Jerry and Sally / Romotsky." Loosely laid in are a press release and promotional flyer for a 1983 exhibition of Jerry Romotsky's paintings (where the book was likely signed), as well as eight color slides of Romotsky's graffiti-influenced works from that show. Minor soil to front cover, touches of shelfwear. Overall sound.

Description
Philadelphia: Anti-slavery Society of the City and County of Philadelphia; printed by Merrihew & Gunn, 1837. Single quarto issue (29cm x 23cm; ca. 11-1/2" x 9-1/4"). Bifolium (4pp), pages numbered [9]-12. Issued monthly. Old horizontal fold at center (as issued?); small loss at upper margin (away from printed area), brief separations at folds, without loss to text; complete and Good. Single issue of this very scarce, presumably short-lived abolitionist newspaper, published by Benjamin S. Jones under the auspices of the Anti-slavery Society of the City & County of Philadelphia. This copy with dated (1864) pencil ownership markings of "J.E. Jones," this possibly being the publisher's spouse, the reformer, abolitionist, and suffragist Jane Elizabeth Jones (née Hitchcock; 1816-1896). The paper's contents are devoted almost entirely to exposure of the injustices of the southern slave system, with excerpts from Southern papers quoted and sharply rebuked by Jones' editorial comments. This issue also includes a brief notice of the progress of the recently-founded city of Houston, Texas, which now contained "...about 3000 people, two hundred buildings, four hotels, thirteen retail stores, and one wholesale establishment..." The extracts quoted in this issue are generally dated from March, April, and May of 1837, leading us to suggest a May-June date for this issue. It is unclear how many issues of Facts for the People appeared. The only recorded example for a physical copy is at AAS, which holds two unspecified issues, with the annotation "sparse holdings." Not in LCP Afro-Americana. Not in Blockson.
