A MEDIEVAL ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF, RECOVERED FROM A BINDING

Description
Germany(?), late 12th or early 13th century. 335 x 224 mm. (13 1/4 x 8 7/8"). Double column, 29 lines, in an elegant proto-gothic book hand. Rubrics in red, several two-line initials in red. Recovered from a binding and so the vellum a bit soiled, creased, and wavy, recto with a lighter patch (where a title label was once situated), light stains and glue and paper residue on the verso, but overall the leaf remarkably clean, entirely legible, and surprisingly well preserved. Once serving as a cover for a later book, this leaf comes from a nearly contemporaneous copy of Peter Lombard's "Sentences," considered the most important theological book of the 12th century. Written between 1155 and 1158 and arranged topically, Lombard's "Sententiae" summarize past learning about Christian doctrine by quoting authorities in an attempt to resolve textual disagreement by dialectical analysis. As a source collection that continued to spark discussion, Lombard's great work enjoyed sustained success as a theological textbook until the 17th century and inspired numerous commentaries, including those of Aquinas and Luther. This leaf comes from Book IV, "On the Doctrine of Signs," which is primarily concerned with the seven sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist, Penance, Extreme Unction, Sacred Orders, and Matrimony. The script is an upright and very legible proto-gothic book hand with a few distinctive letter forms and abbreviations that may help determine a more definitive point of origin (these include a "g" with a downward cross on its tail, and a conjoined "qe" for "que"). It is unusual (and very lucky) that this leaf survives completely intact, as Medieval manuscripts used in later bindings were often cut down in size to make smaller covers or used as waste paper for pastedowns or other binding elements..

Description
London: Printed for Tho. Woodward [by William Bowyer], 1726. FIRST EDITION. One of 1,000 copies (according to Bowyer's ledgers, per ESTC). 360 x 222 mm. (14 x 8 3/4"). 12 p.l., 456 [i.e. 452] pp. (4L2v is numbered 316-320). Contemporary calf, covers with gilt roll frame, oblique floral cornerpieces, rebacked in olive-brown calf, raised bands flanked by scrolling gilt rolls, panels with decorative gilt centerpiece, red morocco label, marbled endpapers and edges (neat repairs to head edge and to corners). With engraved frontispiece, five small engravings in the text, and two engraved plates of plants. Front pastedown with armorial bookplate of Charles Gresley; pp. 286, 288-290 with contemporary ink annotations to (folded) fore margins. Henrey 945; ESTC T146573. ◆Boards with a number of small abrasions, but the restored binding sound, and perfectly agreeable; isolated faint dust-soiling to head margins, other trivial imperfections, but the text in very fine condition, especially clean, crisp, and bright, and with ample margins. Very fresh and bright internally, especially for a book expected to incur use in an unprotected context, this practical and comprehensive work would have been an indispensable resource for any 18th century husbandman interested in raising livestock and cultivating trees, vegetables, and fruit. Although the frontispiece depicts the stately Richmond home of the Prince of Wales, with its manicured grounds and rows of neatly spaced trees, the contents are just as useful to the everyman, including "Husbandman, Grazier, Planter, Gardener, and Florist." John Laurence (1668-1752) was a fellow at Cambridge before becoming rector of Yelvertoft, Northamptonshire, where he developed a passion for horticulture while renewing a dilapidated garden there (DNB tells us he was especially skilled at growing pears). Laurence wrote three books on the pleasures of gardening while living in Yelvertoft; he later moved to Bishopwearmouth, Durham, where he wrote the present work--his last and, according to Henrey, "most ambitious literary project." The author explains how to improve and maintain the land in book I, with advice on planting crops and raising different kinds of livestock, from cattle to silkworms. He even devotes a few chapters to using land for mines and quarries, revealing the "hidden Treasures, which lie couched in Nature's Bowels." Book II is devoted to forest and timber trees, and books III-V offer a catalogue of fruit trees, vegetables, and decorative plants to grow in the Fruit Garden, Kitchen Garden, and Flower-Garden, respectively. This is a pleasurable book to leaf through, being wonderfully clean throughout, and accessible to the modern reader, with familiar plants that might be growing in one's backyard today..

Description
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1941. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. A Fine copy of the book in a Near Fine dust jacket. Jacket with a scratch on the front panel, slight rubbing to the spine and spine ends and very slight fading to the spine, but much less than typically encountered. Let Us Now Praise Famous Men is the surprisingly striking product of a Fortune Magazine collaboration between photographer, Walker Evans, and writer, James Agee, in 1936. For four weeks they lived, worked alongside, and earned the trust of desolately impoverished sharecropping families in Alabama. Originally envisioned as a short article on sharecroppers in the Deep South amidst the reforms of President Roosevelt's New Deal, Agee and Walker expanded the work considerably. Emotionally driven by the poverty they experienced, Agee and Walker crafted a fictionalized account of three families incorporating Evans' powerful images. Despite a lukewarm initial reception, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men was brought to national attention by the social justice movements of the 1960s and has remained an important work of southern literature and an innovative collaborative work. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

1903. Japanese Fairy Tale Series No. 25. Chin Chin Kobakama. Lafcadio Hearn, translator.T. Hasegawa (Hasegawa Takejirō 長谷川武次郎), publisher. Meiji 36 [1903]. 19.2 x 13.9cm crepe paper book, stab-bound Japanese style, fukuro-toji. [10] cho, including introductory notes by the translator. Colophon in Japanese on the inside rear wrapper with the date Meiji 36 [1903] gives the Hasegawa publisher address as 17 Kami Negishi. [10] pages with woodcuts on the front and rear inside wrappers. Colorful and detailed woodblock prints and English text throughout. Chin-Chin Kobakama is a cautionary tale of a lazy young woman who is taunted every night for her sloth by angry fairies who live within her tatami mats. It is a classic Japanese folklore tale, which has similar iterations with the same moral and ending, such as the additional [1] cho tale at the end, about a girl who hides her plum-stones in the tatami mats. This tale is illustrated with charming woodcuts of ladies in colorful kimono that dance across the final page over onto the rear inside wrapper. Wear and toning to wrappers with dirt staining on front cover, inside front cover and spots on a few pages. Front cho is nearly split and rear cho is split and detaching with rips at binding. Stain along side and top edges of final page. The letter ‘E’ is handwritten on the rear inside wrapper. A wonderful early printing.

[Los Angeles]: FX. Near Fine. [2008]. First Edition. Hardcover. (in Near Fine slipcase) [book itself is unworn, but slightly blemished on rear endpapers from removal of spot of sticky substance; slipcase shows some external surface-rubbing]. (color photographs and graphics) Large-format (approx. 9"x13") promotional book (in slipcase), issued in advance of the premiere of the fourth season of the FX series "American Horror Story," a self-contained 13-episode mini-series set in Jupiter, Florida, in 1952, and telling the story of the struggle fo survival of one of the last remaining freak shows in America. Several pages are devoted to each of the show's major characters, including a full-page color photo of each actor in costume, and a publicity-kit-type biography of the actor; among the cast were Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Michael Chiklis, and Angela Bassett. Also profiled (more briefly) are the members of the show's creative team and various FX network executives. Per Wikipedia, "Freak Show" was FX's most-watched program ever, and received a total of twenty Emmy nominations, including six for various cast members. As essentially a press kit (albeit a well-produced one), this was never offered for sale to the public. NOTE that the scanned image accompanying this listing is of the book itself, not the slipcase. .

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1902. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 7x5x0. Vawter, J.W. U.S. Secretary of State Robert Lansing's copy, with his bookplate on front endpaper. Spine faded, light edge wear, front matter and a couple pages faintly foxed. Binding tight and square, text clean and unmarked. 1902 Hard Cover. 176 pp. Maroon cloth, gilt titles and decorations, top edge gilt. A collection of verse about children by American poet James Whitcomb Riley. Frontispiece, plates, and woodcut illustrations on title page and throughout text, by J.W. Vawter. About the author: "James Whitcomb Riley (October 7, 1849 - July 22, 1916) was an American writer, poet, and best-selling author. During his lifetime he was known as the "Hoosier Poet" and "Children's Poet" for his dialect works and his children's poetry respectively. His poems tended to be humorous or sentimental, and of the approximately one thousand poems that Riley authored, the majority are in dialect. His famous works include "Little Orphant Annie" and "The Raggedy Man". Riley began his career writing verses as a sign maker and submitting poetry to newspapers. Thanks in part to an endorsement from poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, he eventually earned successive jobs at Indiana newspaper publishers during the latter 1870s. Riley gradually rose in prominence during the 1880s through his poetry reading tours. He traveled a touring circuit first in the Midwest, and then nationally, holding shows and making joint appearances on stage with other famous talents. Riley was an alcoholic, never married or had children, and caused a scandal in 1888 when he became too drunk to perform. His publicist blamed his alcoholism and depression on his inability to achieve financial success, despite his fame and popularity. He was ultimately able to extricate himself from poorly negotiated contracts that had limited his earnings and as a result, he quickly became very wealthy. By the 1890s, Riley became a bestselling author. His children's poems were compiled into a book and illustrated by Howard Chandler Christy. Titled Rhymes of Childhood, the book was his most popular and sold millions of copies. As a poet, Riley achieved an uncommon level of fame during his own lifetime. He was honored with annual Riley Day celebrations around the United States and was regularly called on to perform readings at national civic events. He continued to write and hold occasional poetry readings until a stroke paralyzed his right arm in 1910. Riley's chief legacy was his influence in fostering the creation of a midwestern cultural identity and his contributions to the Golden Age of Indiana Literature. Along with other writers of his era, he helped create a caricature of midwesterners and formed a literary community that produced works rivaling the established eastern literati. There are many memorials dedicated to Riley, including the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children.
