Description
1569. BARBARO, Daniel. La Pratica della Perspettiva di Monsignor Daniel Barbaro Eletto Patriarca D'Aquileia, Opera molto utile a Pittori, a Scultori, & ad Architetti. [2], 196, [12] pp., illustrated with over 200 woodcut diagrams and illustrations of which over 20 are full-page and one double-page. Folio, 300 x 204 mm., bound in contemporary Italian limp vellum, in a new red quarter morocco box. Venice: Camillo and Rutilio Borgominieri, 1569. First edition, second issue with both the title-page and colophon dated 1569. An unsophisticated copy of Daniel Barbaro's treatise on the rules of perspective specifically designed for Italian artists and architects, as previous quality treaties on the subject were in German, French and Latin. Barbaro (1514-1570) borrowed heavily from Serlio and from an unpublished treatise by Piero della Francesca for this work. However, the work stands on its own as an important advance in the understanding and practical use of perspective and brought these ideas to a broader audience. La Pratica della Perspettiva is divided into three parts: the first part discusses the principles of perspective and graphic representations. The second part breaks down the five regular polyhedrons, continuing the work of Leonardo and Pacioli. The last, and perhaps most important section, offers a study of scenography, dimensions of the human body, optical illusions, discussions of colour and shadow, and depictions of drawing instruments including the first analytic discussion of the camera obscura. The work is profusely illustrated with woodcut diagrams, geometrical forms, illustrations of architectural elements, scenery, anatomical illustrations, images of drawing instruments which includes the depiction of two men using one to copy a lute, freely borrowed from Albrecht Dürer's seminal Underweysung der Messung. Perhaps most attractive are the woodcut headpieces adorning the beginning of several chapters, being clever three-dimensional geometrical designs. Notes in Italian in a contemporary hand on the verso of the front flyleaf. Vellum with small stains and cracks, some very light marginal waterstaining, overall a fine copy in its original limp vellum binding, rare thus. PROVENANCE: Ex Libris Liechtensteinianis. Ex Musaeo Hans Furstenberg, with library stamp on front fly-leaf. Millard, Italian 12. Mortimer, Italian 39. Cicognara 809. Adams B170. Berlin Katalog 4694.

Description
11/11/1870. Ralph Waldo Emerson is remembered today as an essayist, lecturer, philosopher, abolitionist, and poet who led the Transcendental movement of the mid-19th century. His ideology is disseminated to us through his voluminous writings. But to his contemporaries, he was best known as a lecturer, and he delivered some 1,500 addresses In the United States and Great Britain over the course of his career. Over the period 1833-1871, Emerson often spent four to six months a year on the lecture circuit. In April 1871, just three months after this letter, Emerson’s lectures are commonly considered to have come to an end. This is so because any later lectures cannot be reconstructed. Because his most important ideas were worked out in his lectures, these lectures provide the best record we have of his evolving thought-and thus are a key to understanding of his essays and other printed works.Emerson was invited to speak at Andover, Massachusetts on January 13, 1871. Emerson’s Journal records that in September 1870, Emerson has written, “Andover 13 January proposed,” as it had been by a Roderic Terry of that town. At another location, Emerson wrote in the name of Terry and the year 1871. His account books indeed show that Terry paid Emerson on January 13, 1871. Based on other charges Emerson specified for lectures for this period, he likely received $70 for the lecture. The content of the lecture does not appear to be published.Autograph letter signed, Concord, November 11, 1870, to Roderic Terry. ""I do not foresee that any engagement will prevent me from coming to Andover on the evening of the 13th January next, as proposed in your note which should have been answered much earlier."" This letter is cited in The Letters of Ralph Waldo Emerson, which notes that it was sold at City Book Auction in 1949.By the spring of 1871, Emerson’s mind was on travel. He took a trip on the transcontinental railroad, barely two years after its completion.

Description
Springfield: Printed by Edward Gray, 1794 First edition of a moral guide book that serves to impart virtue and advice to readers on a variety of subjects: taste, time management, study, the cultivation of reason, friendship, aging, death, the "different and absurd notions which men entertain of God," of the duty of parents in education, children, good and evil, business, the omnipresence of God, and much more. . Contemporary full sheep. . Sixteenmo. Binding extremities have some wear and light scuffing. Lacks front flyleaf. Several pieces removed from upper title-page, but with no loss of text. Some browning, dampstaining, and foxing. Contemporary ink inscriptions on title-page, contemporary ink date on upper margin of p. v. A good copy of a fragile work. OCLC identifies the author as "J. Torrey," but we were unable to find any biographical information, including his or her dates. In the "Advertisement," the author provides an explanation for withholding his/her name, which is stated as follows: "For as the morals of a divine add no little weight to the doctrine he would inculcate from the pulpit; so the life of a writer equally diminishes, or adds, to the regard the public pay his works" (p.v). In his "To the Reader" section, the author writes: "…my chief aim and design in this composition is to promote the principles of morality and religion, and to render youth vigilant in discharging the social and relative duties in the several stations of life; by instilling into their minds such maxims of virtue and good-breeding, as tend to eradicate local prejudices and rusticity of manners" (p ix).

In picturesque nineteenth-century New England, tomboyish Jo, beautiful Meg, fragile Beth, and romantic Amy are responsible for keeping a home while their father is off to war. At the same time, they must come to terms with their individual personalities - and make the transition from girlhood to womanhood. It can all be quite a challenge. But the March sisters, however different, are nurtured by their wise and beloved Marmee, bound by their love for each other and the feminine strength they share. Readers of all ages have fallen instantly in love with these Little Women. Their story transcends time - making this novel endure as a classic piece of American literature that has captivated generations of readers with their charm, innocence, and wistful insights. This Signet Classics edition contains Little Women in its entirety, including Parts I and II.
