Collection of Photographs of Cars, Trucks, and Specialty Vehicles from a Pasadena Rental Car Company that Catered to the Movie Industry in the 1920s

Description
Twenty-seven (27) 8” x 10” photographs showcasing high-end vehicles for rent from the Iowa Garage in Pasadana, California, owned by former race car mechanic Eugene Lajunie (b. 1885). Each photo is accompanied by a typed caption giving the model number, color, some specifications, and the price per day to rent with a driver. Vehicles include many touring cars and cabriolets made by Renault, Packard, and Daimler; a Sunbeam roadster, town cars, taxis, a limousine, army trucks, a French truck mounted with an anti-aircraft gun, and several remarkable “camera cars” made with front or rear-mounted platforms to hold movie cameras and their operators. Rental prices ranged from $35/day for a camera car to $75/day for the Sunbeam Roadster or a 1926 Renault cabriolet. Many of the cars are “posed” in front of beautiful homes on tree-lined Pasadena streets. These photographs would originally have been in a sales catalogue or album, and there are remnants of the original pages on which they were mounted on the back of each one. Some have the original typed captions taped to the back, others are accompanied by recent copies of those captions. These photographs were acquired as a group from the granddaughter of Eugene Lajunie, and we believe the family made the modern captions to replace damaged ones from the original album. The images themselves are all original and in very good condition. Born in France, Lajunie emigrated to the United States to work as the personal mechanic of racecar driver George Heath. Heath won first Vanderbilt Cup race with Lajunie at his side in 1904. Lajunie later lived in Davenport, Iowa, before moving to Pasadena and opening his Iowa Garage on South Fair Oaks avenue. There he personally repaired, restored, and equipped the vehicles he rented to Hollywood studios.

Description
India, 19th or 20th century. Good. Two paintings on manuscript leaves (ca. 300 x 220 mm), both hinged on plexiglas so that the verso is visible, both matted (matte size: 400 x 315 mm). Edges of manuscript leaves significantly worm-damaged, without loss to painting of the bull, but intruding in several places into that of the camel. Colors vibrant and gold quite bright. Very attractive paintings. Two delicate Indian paintings that were likely made for the tourist trade, painted on manuscript leaves that have nothing to do with the images. The Arabic text of the manuscript is a Persian / Urdu dictionary. We admire the delicacy of the painting, particularly the modelling of the faces which are expressive. The hair on both animals is rendered in almost impossibly thin brush strokes. Suitable for exhibition and study. We are grateful to Kelley Tuttle for her characteristically excellent cataloguing assistance.

Description
Richmond [Surrey, England]: The Hogarth Press, 1923 First edition, printed in an edition of 1,000 copies. "There is a secondary binding in grass-green cloth with white paper label on spine similar to the noted above. Mr. Leonard Woolf does not recall the reason for this, but thinks that the paper, of Czechoslovak origin, may have run out and that the later copies were bound in the green-grass cloth which was used originally for the spine only." . Publisher's red and green diamond pattern over white paper boards. Green cloth spine with white printed paper label. Spine lightly faded. Some chipping/toning to spine label. Mild shelf wear to board edges. Light marginalia markings and underlining to first section. Small label to front paste-down from bookstore in Middlesex. A good + copy. In a preface to the present work, Tolstoy's personal associate and biographer Paul Biryukov explains the contentious nature of the love letters, which Tolstoy disclosed to him in the course of his biographical research, but which Tolstoy's wife, Sophie Andreevna, initially forbade Biryukov to publish. By the time Biryukov published the third edition of volume one of the Tolstoy biography, Andreevna had died, and Biryukov was free to do with the letters what he liked. He published them in full, and the present work's translations are drawn directly from the third edition of the first volume. The section titled "The Autobiographical Elements in Tolstoi's Works" is a short character study conducted by Biryukov as a result of direct conversations with Tolstoy and his famil

N.p.: Banner Pictures, 1956. Ten vintage studio still photographs from the US release of the 1950 West German film musical. A now-faded singer begins to regret her estrangement from her daughters after years of neglect while at the height of her career. Although she declared no political position during World War II, Leander was strongly associated with the Nazi Party due to her contract with UFA (and multiple successful films with that studio) in the late 1930s and early 1940s, and was subsequently restricted from appearing in German films until 1949. 10 x 8 inches. Seattle: Montlake, 2026. 1st Printing. Trade Paperback. Very Good. 5x1x8. First paperback printing. Light 1 inch crease on front corner, otherwise an excellent copy. Binding tight anf square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 2026 Trade Paperback. 299 pp. Her words used to set the page on fire. But a viral backlash over her latest film adaptation forced Petra Rose to take a hiatus, resulting in missed deadlines and an overdue mortgage. Branded a fraud and fame-hungry opportunist, she learned the hard way what happens when the internet turns on you. And she's been uninspired to write ever since. Now, with her next suspense novel outlined and savings nearly gone, she retreats to a secluded lakeside cabin, hoping to find inspiration. It's Petra's last-ditch attempt to save her career - and herself. Then he shows up. Detective Nathaniel Saint arrives with disturbing news, his presence igniting a creativity in her she thought long since burned out. Petra's words return in a rush, and her fictional cop character begins to mirror the very real cop who's becoming her muse. Their "research" sessions blur the lines between fantasy and reality. Each glance, every touch pulls Petra deeper into a world she thought she'd never lose herself in again. She's never felt more alive. But inspiration this powerful comes at a cost. When Saint starts taking his role in her career a little too seriously, Petra's forced to confront the chaos she created. But doing so could cost her more than the reputation she's been trying to salvage. The reputation the world wrote for her - the reputation only she can reclaim.
