Description
1962. First Edition. Signed. SEXTON, Anne. All My Pretty Ones. Boston and Cambridge: Houghton Mifflin and The Riverside Press, 1962. Slim octavo, original half black cloth, original dust jacket. $2900.First edition, presentation copy, of Sexton's second collection of autobiographical poetry, inscribed in the year of publication to illustrator Barbara Swan, whose lithograph, ""The Musicians,"" inspired the 1964 poem, ""To Lose the Earth"": ""For Barbara, with love and thanks for ""The Musicians""—Anne. Dec-1962.""A collection ""of torment and reflection transposed into personal poetry reveals power and potential substance… Many of the poems explore the pain of others dying—here mostly parental portraits—and all the familiar responses, anger, indifference and celebration, appear in varying dosage. There is painful realism as well ('The Operation') and eulogies on the most vivid of Miss Sexton's subjects—woman, as mother, lover, and child… [B]olstered by strong words, and imploring emotion, the poems aim to realize their author's conception: 'This is what poems are:/ with mercy/ for the greedy/ they are the tongue's wrangle/ the world's pottage, the rat's star' (Kirkus Review). This presentation copy is inscribed to Barbara Swan, a well-known American lithographer, painter, and illustrator. Swan, a member of the Boston Expressionist school during her early career, developed important collaborative relationships with several creative women through a grant at the Radcliffe Institute for Independent Study. Anne Sexton was one of those women. Swan provided pen-and-ink illustrations for several of Sexton's books, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning Live or Die. In an essay on Sexton that Swan wrote (and that was later published in Anne Sexton: Telling the Tale (1988)), Swan recalled the impact of her lithograph, ""The Musicians"" on Sexton. The lithograph inspired Sexton's poem, ""To Lose the Earth,"" published in 1964. Sexton and Swan encountered many of the same criticisms throughout their career: namely, that their work was overly feminine, emotional, and delicate. Their collaboration resulted in an enduring friendship and many notable contributions to poetry, illustration, and book arts in general.Book about fine. Dust jacket extremely good, with a bit of wear mainly to extremities. A desirable inscribed copy with an interesting association.

Description
Chicago: Illinois Central Railroad Company, 1897. Handwritten. Very Good. No Binding. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 87 pages (22 manuscript, 61 typed, and 4 telegrams). Almost all individual correspondences signed. This collection of correspondence documents the late-nineteenth-century planning and negotiation necessary in constructing an Illinois Central Railroad Company (ICRR) branch line connecting Dyersburg, Tennessee to the Stevens Lumber Company track at the Obion River. This project, envisioned during a period of rapid railroad expansion, displays the economic importance of regional development via railroads at the turn of the twentieth century. The planning of this line would ultimately contribute to the formation of the Chicago, Memphis & Gulf Railroad Company in the early 20th century. This collection, likely assembled and retained by David Sloan, acting Chief Engineer of the ICRR, includes engineering reports, drafts of contracts, cost estimates, invoices, telegrams, and letters exchanged amongst railroad officials predominantly regarding the Dyersburg to Obion River switch. Main themes include route selection, flood risk, right-of-way acquisition, grading costs, and the financial feasibility of constructing thirteen miles of track through flood-prone terrain described here as being "overflowed every year." They also note the need for a wide right of way and extensive elevation measurements due to seasonal flooding along the Mississippi floodplain. The correspondence also illustrates the web of permissions, agreements, and financial commitments required to advance a railroad project, even when constructing just thirteen miles of track. Because Stevens Lumber Company and the citizens of Dyersburg were primary financial backers, their interests also heavily influenced decisions. There were also discussions about a line connecting a southern alignment along the Chester tract to the Stevens Lumber Co. track, a line from Dyersburg to the "Joe Stinger place on the old channel of the Mississippi River," and a line from the Obion River to Carruthersville and Tiptonville. This project eventually evolved into a line extending from Dyersburg to Tiptonville, first independently organized as the Dyersburg Northern Railroad Company and later renamed the Chicago, Memphis & Gulf Railroad Company. Notable correspondents: David Sloan (Chief Engineer, ICRR), J. P. Wallace (Assistant Second Vice President), A. T. Sabin (Assistant Engineer), T. J. Hudson (Traffic Manager), A. W. Sullivan (General Superintendent), M. Gilleas (Assistant General Superintendent), C. A. Wilson (Chief Engineer, Chicago, Dyersburg & Northern Railroad), and the Obion Business League. Overall condition Very Good, all sheets legible. .

Description
1962. Indianapolis 500 photograph archive. 1962. This group documents the 46th running of the Indianapolis 500 held May 30, 1962, preserving race action and spectator experience at a moment when American open-wheel racing was undergoing a shift from front-engine to rear-engine design. The photographs include views of the No. 5 Watson-Offenhauser driven by Rodger Ward, the race winner, recording one of the final winning performances of the traditional front-engine roadster before its displacement later in the decade. The archive establishes the Indianapolis 500 as both a technical competition and a large-scale public event, with attention to car design, track conditions, and the scale of audience participation. Archive of fourteen vernacular silver gelatin black-and-white photographs, each measuring approximately 3.25 x 4.5 inches, with two prints bearing processing dates "JUN 62." The images show race cars in motion on the track, including Ward's No. 5 entry and other competitors associated with drivers such as Len Sutton, with visible numbering and bodywork details. Several photographs are taken from infield and spectator vantage points, combining close views of cars navigating turns and straightaways with wider views of grandstands filled with spectators. Motion blur in some images conveys speed, while sharper exposures preserve mechanical and visual detail. Additional photographs document the crowd, with men in hats and women in summer attire seated in the stands, reading programs and watching the race. Multiple images include the Goodyear blimp positioned above the speedway, indicating the event's scale and its integration into mid-century sports media and sponsorship. The 1962 Indianapolis 500 occurred during a transitional period in racing technology, as European rear-engine cars began to challenge established American designs, leading to rapid change in the years immediately following. At the same time, the race functioned as a major national gathering, drawing large audiences and media attention that reinforced its position within American sports culture. Fine condition with strong tonal clarity; minor edge wear from handling; no significant defects; two photographs dated "JUN 62." A focused visual record of a specific race and the broader cultural and technological context of American motorsport in the early 1960s.

Description
London: W. Dickenson in Witch Street, 1733. First Edition. Folio. 32.5cm. Disbound, with slight residual crust of old calf to spine region. 18pp. Some old ink spots to title page, which effectively comprises the front wrap, strong and durable, toning to the extremities of both outer wraps and a little internal thumbing, otherwise clean and fresh, woodcut head and tailpieces, luxuriously wide margins. A very good, long disbound example of a well-aimed piece of 18th century satire. A vastly Popean excoriating satire of the Whig government of the 1830's under Robert Walpole, James Ralph, William Stanhope as Secretary of State, George Byng as First Lord of The Admiralty, and a host of other aristocratic pillars of the British aristocratic system. Written in full flow as faux-Pope, Whitehead, with full reference to The Dunciad and wielding the righteous wrath of a breakfast table diplomat under full sail, tears into the sitting government and bemoans with Pope how nothing has changed since the last crop of dunces. A successful part II was published in the same year, and the two are often found bound together, this copy comprises only part I. Whitehead's uncanny ability to ape Popean epic actually made him something of a living during the 1830's-40's, allowing him to pen political and social satire like a Temu Alexander Pope, but available at Witch Street prices. Foxon gives priority to this one which also contains 24 lines eliminated in the others. This was the poem that Whitehead sold for an advance of ten guineas, provoking Johnson to demand the same for London in 1738. Foxon W426; ESTC T48572.
