Description
Venice: Giordano Ziletti, 1574. First Edition in Italian. Folio. [18] ff., 296 pp. Collation: *8 **6 ***4 A-Z6 AA10, COMPLETE. Ziletti's device on title, 5 large woodcuts showing operations (2 on the battlefield), numerous woodcut illustrations of surgical instruments and heads with incisions, occasional staining or soiling; title with outer corners extended; fol. f5 with marginal infill, gathering AA at end with old ink stain to top margin, extending perhaps 5 mm and not affecting text, N1-2 with old ink stain in the lower margin, likewise not affecting text; Interesting early annotations to the first 35 pages, including early ownership inscriptions on title (dated 1605). Recent full vellum antique. FIRST VERNACULAR EDITION. Recognized as one of the foremost sixteenth century accounts of surgery in Italy, this was preceded only by this publisher's Latin edition of the previous year; our edition contains MORE woodcuts of surgical instruments and illustrations of the removal of bullets by field surgeons. The "Cirugia" is justly celebrated for its profusion of fine woodcuts, some half- or full-page. It includes original illustrations for cranial surgery. "Croce improved the instruments for trephination, and published classic woodcuts depicting the operation, including the first illustrations of a neurological surgery actually taking place. The work is also important for Croce's description of cranial and cerebral diseases. In hundreds of woodcuts of instruments and procedures Croce illustrated all of the instruments used before and during his own time" (Garrison-Morton). "The various types of arrows, spears, and bullets used in warfare of his day are also illustrated as well as several scenes of the typical operating room of the sixteenth century" (Heirs of Hippocrates). Concerning the trepan, Croce used a brace and drill stock, to which the circular saw or a sharp perforator was fixed with a screw (see: C.J.S. Thompson, History of Surgical Instruments, 1942, p. 40, with illustration). Giovanni Andrea della Croce (1514-1575), a native of Croce d'Ampugnani in Corsica, practiced at Venice and played an important part in the rise of surgery during the Italian Renaissance. He was certainly familiar with Pare's methods, and probably learned of them through Guido Guidi of Paris. Of this first Italian edition, only one other copy has sold since 2012 according to Rare Book Hub, unless we consider the gravely defective copy that was offered on three different occasions by Kiefer, which with good reason always failed to sell. Ours is the only copy of this edition currently on the market, complete or otherwise. Wellcome I, 1668 (inexplicably fols. *3v-*4r in their online surrogate are not reproduced). This edition not in Waller, Osler, or Adams.

Description
FIRST "COMPUTER" PORTRAIT OF AMERICA'S FIRST PRESIDENT Lyon, Joseph Marie Jacquard, 1856. Silk machine-woven textile (49.8 x 42.2 cm). Mounted on old board. Edge wear, some marginal tears and losses, edge toning from mounting tape, some damp staining and wrinkling. This said, a remarkable survival. Rare silk textile portrait of George Washington (1732-99) woven on the earliest programmable loom – the Jacquard Loom – which influenced the development of other programmable, punch-card-driven machines that in turn would lead to the early versions of IBM's digital compiler. The present work thus may plausibly be considered the first 'computer' portrait of the first President of the United States. The textile carries the monogram 'JR' and is dated 1856 from Lyon, the birthplace and home of Joseph Marie Jacquard (1752-1834), who invented his revolutionary device in 1804 to aid in the production of complex patterns of damask, matelassé and brocade. Based on Gilbert Stuart's (1755-1828) iconic portrait, this two-color textile is inscribed with the famed line, 'First in War, First in Peace, and First in the Hearts of his Countrymen,' which is taken from Washington's eulogy delivered by Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee (1756-1818), a major general in the Continental Army, a member of the Continental Congress, governor of Virginia, father of the famous Civil War general Robert E. Lee, and a close friend of Washington. Now rare, the textile was apparently well known to American audiences for decades after its initial production: A certain R. H. Thurston, for example, in his 1880 inaugural address as president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, invoked history's greatest engineers, including "Jacquard, who perfected the pattern-loom, which to-day weaves with equal facility the portrait of him who was 'first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen,' and the most beautiful and ingenious combinations of form and color of which decorative art is so wonderfully prolific" (Thurston, p. 9). Provenance: Skinner, Fine Books and Manuscripts, 1 June 2013, lot 19. * J. Essinger, Jacquard's Web: How a Hand-Loom Led to the Birth of the Information Age; R. H. Thurston, "The President's Inaugural Address," Transactions of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, vol. 1 (1880), pp. 1-16.

Description
Onnakunjyōhōki 女訓重宝記 early 1700s? Osaka. Publ by Morita Shōtarō 毛利田庄太朗 2 vols in one, string bound in fukuro toji 26 x 18cm with modern brushed title slip and housed in a modern chitsu with clasps 26 x 19cm. 7cm margin at the top throughout. 44 cho with black and white original woodblock prints, two hand-colored, and Japanese text. Recent title slip in Japanese text laid in. Onnakunjyōhōki 女訓重宝記 is a type of Jyoshiyō Ōraimono 女子用往来物, or instruction manual for women. It is an early- to mid-18th century etiquette book in which vol 1 depicts women in detailed kimono and hairstyles of the period, while vol 2 includes more extensive text and focuses on women working in the household. Household work shown includes serving tea and hand washing laundry, but also extends to the arts. One chapter, for example, is entitled Someruhiden そめるひでん, Secrets of Dyeing, and a woodcut shows women with lengths of fabric and tools used in the art of dyeing. Although the date given by the previous owner is Tenma period 天和 1681-84, the hairstyles of women appear to be from the Genroku period (c.1690) and the sophistication of the woodcuts lends itself to a later period. It is possible that Nishikawa Sukenobu 西川 祐信 (1671 – 1750), a well-known mid-18th century Kyoto artist, or a follower, had a hand in this sophisticated work. Sukenobo portrayed women from all walks of life, and his work was greatly appreciated during his time. The connection between Morita Shoutarou and Nishikawa has been established, as the publisher put out at least five different books by the artist. In addition, Morita Shoutarou was involved in publishing ōraimono; Yometori 嫁取, for example, was a tract for a new wife entering a household and was published in 1697. No record of Onnakunjyōhōki in KSSM, NDL or in any university or fine art holdings that we can find. Staining, wear to wrappers, slight worming, some damage to prints. The prints are good for this type of book, better quality than most, as they were circulated like paperback books.

"Sentiment is out of fashion," says Beerbohm in his note. "Yet Bittersweet, which is nothing if not sentimental, is not a dead failure ... Sentiment goes on; unaffrighted by the roarings of the young lions and lionesses of Bloomsbury, Bittersweet goes on, too; and Mr. Cochran [Charles Cochran, the producer] (being a sentimentalist), has wished that his survival should be commemorated by me in some sentimental drawings, which are here submitted to you." Along with Noel Coward, there are portraits of Peggy Wood, Georges Metaxa, Ivy St. Helier, and Cochran.

Description
Boston: Otis Clapp, 1848. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Original yellow printed wrappers. The publisher’s English translation of Swedenborg’s popular cosmological treatise. In it, the author claims that there are two worlds—the natural and the spiritual, each with its own sun. The sun of the natural world is fire and thus all beings that live in its presence are dead, and the sun of the spiritual world is only a manifestation of God’s love. Man may ascend from the natural to the spiritual world and attain immortality through moral words and deeds.

Some cover soiling scuffing and wear. Internally sound and clean with some minor corner curling. Not found in OCLC although the Universidad de Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras seems to have a copy. The New York Times Book Review of July 5, 1936 gave a paragraph to the English language magazine's debut. We found nothing to definitive as to whether any additional issues were published. We also had difficulty finding much about Mr. Vandemeyer, the editor and publisher. The front cover illustration and one of the other color illustrations in this issue were done by Eliza Bellows King Dooley, 1880–1958, who is also listed (as Mrs. Henry W. Dooley) as Art Director for this periodical. Her Wikipedia entry offers some details about her life in Puerto Rico and elsewhere as an American government official, artist, and writer.

Near Fine in Very Good dj
Description
Garden City NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc.. Near Fine in Very Good dj. 1928. Later Printing. Hardcover. (in A.L. Burt reissue dust jacket) [minimal shelfwear, top corners a bit bumped; jacket edgeworn, a bit of paper loss at spine ends, a few small edge-tears]. Proto-feminist novel that grapples with the burning question: "Is there a new kind of woman coming to disturb our homes -- a woman who lives by making war on her kind? Has the freedom won by the 'old-fashioned suffragist' been taken over by a new 'emancipated' type who ignore women's duties while demanding women's privileges? Hilda Reynolds was forced to believe so. She had created for her husband, her three boys, and her flapper daughter, a household where there was a spirit of sportsmanship and loyalty. Perhaps she did 'wear hats that would have caused a civil war,' but she was a good mother and a good citizen. Then Vesta took the house next door, and Hilda's quiet, happy life was rudely shattered." The author (1888-1952) had been a newspaper reporter at age nineteen and also wrote magazine fiction; she published her first novel in 1917 and subsequently wrote one or two books every year until 1934. (NOTE that the book itself bears the Doubleday, Doran identification inside and out, but is encased in an A.L. Burt reissue dustjacket.) .

New York:: Appleton-Century-Crofts, 1970., 1970. 8vo. Cloth, dust-jacket. INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR KURT DEUSCHLE [not stated, but inscribed to Arthur Frank, who is not named in the inscription]. Very good. First edition, hardcover issue. Adair and Deuschle recount their experiences, problems, and conclusions, in the Navajo-Cornell Field Health Research Project, to aid in improving health for the Navajo people. / John Adair was a professor of anthropology San Francisco State College, known for his studies of Navaho culture. Dr. Adair, a native of Memphis, worked with the Navajo and also with the Zuni for more than four decades. He wrote about and photographed many aspects of their culture. / Dr. Kurt W. Deuschle was a leader in creating medical school programs in community medicine, teaching that understanding local culture is a necessity when providing health care in rural and poor areas. A professor emeritus at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Dr. Deuschle began his career in 1952 with the Public Health Service in Fort Defiance, Ariz. As head of the tuberculosis program at the Navajo Medical Center, he recognized that disease could be prevented most effectively by combining Western and Navajo medical practices and by involving health workers from the community. – NYT, Obituary, by Stuart Lavietes, March 2, 2003.
