Ripa sculp. Mediolano" printed to foot of first page of music. Provenance The Earl of Abingdon, with annotation in pencil to recto of front free endpaper, in all likelihood Willoughby Bertie, 4th Earl of Abingdon, Lord Norreys (1740-1799), English peer, music patron, and composer; Norreys was an associate of J.C. Bach and Carl Friedrich Abel, and a patron of Haydn; later noted musicologist and collector Geneviève Thibault Comtesse de Chambure (1902-1975), with her bookplate to front pastedown; "A.n" in contemporary manuscript to verso of front free endpaper. Binding slightly worn, rubbed, bumped, and warped; free rear endpaper lacking. Minor internal wear. A strong impression, in exceptionally good condition overall. First Edition. Rare. BUC p. 1103. RISM Z351 (two copies only in the U.S., at the Newberry Library, and the Library of Congress; the present copy, the only one recorded in France, was subsequently sold at a Paris auction of the collection of the Comtesse de Chambure). Zuccari, an Italian violinist and composer "studied the violin first in his home town, later in Parma, Guastalla and Bologna, and finally in Cremona with Gasparo Visconti. Giuseppe Gonelli taught him counterpoint. In 1723 Zuccari arrived at Vienna in the suite of Count Pertusati. Having won favour at the imperial court, he travelled on to Olomouc, where he stayed for four years, and visited various German towns. In 1733 he married and in 1736 settled in Milan, where he founded a school. In 1741 he participated in the famous academy held at the Collegio dei Nobili under the direction of G.B. Sammartini, who was to call on his services as a violinist on several future occasions. During this period he acquired the nickname Zuccherino quoted in some contemporary sources. Around 1760 he was living in London, where he became a member of the Italian opera orchestra and had some violin compositions published, including his celebrated set of 12 adagios in dual plain and ornamented versions (The True Method of Playing an Adagio). He had returned to Italy by 1765, when he led an orchestra under Sammartini in an academy held at Cremona to mark the passage of the Archduke Leopold. Burney reports having heard him in Milan in 1770, noting that Zuccari was considered 'a good musician'. In 1778 he retired to Casalmaggiore." Michael Talbot in Grove Music Online "One may point to his regular adoption of a three-movement cycle ..., the complexity of melodic elaboration and the exclusion of the bass from the thematic discourse; but despite there 'modern' features his basic harmonic and contrapuntal language departs little from that of Corelli's disciples. In fact, the easy mastery of conventional forms processed by his contemporaries is supplemented by a similar mastery of contrapuntal procedures associated with earlier generations. A movement such as the fugue in the second solo sonata, where two (occasionally even three) instruments are simulated by means of multiple stopping on the single violin, is a remarkable demonstration of the improvements which a more methodical approach could bring to a well-established species of composition cultivated in Italy from Corelli's time." Michael Talbot in The New Grove 2 Vol. 27, p. 874. A highly attractive copy of a very rare publication, elegantly engraved.

Description
Carnuntum, c62AD-200AD. Fragment of a reddish clay brick with the stamp of Legio X Gemina Pia Fidelis “"LEG X C P[F]" (the 10th Roman legion of 5,280 men split into 10 cohorts). Mortar layer on the back, otherwise a very good and well preserved stamp. Ex collection Piscator 1959. Cf. on this piece Brandl, op. cit. no. 187-190. 6 1/2" x 4" x 1 1/4" Legio X Gemina was formed from the disbanded Legio X, the first Roman legion levied personally by Julius Caesar in 58 BCE. It distinguished itself as one of the four legions used by Caesar in his invasion of Gaul, fought for Octavian and Antony against Brutus and Cassius in the Battle of Philippi in 42 BCE, and followed Antony in his campaigns against Parthia and Armenia (36-34 BCE). The legion surrendered to Octavian after the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE, losing its prestigious name Equestris as punishment and receiving veterans from other legions, which earned it the cognomen "Gemina" (twin). After service in the Cantabrian Wars and brief deployments to various frontier posts, the legion was sent to Carnuntum (a fortress on the Danube between current day Vienna and Bratislava) in about 61 CE where it remained vigilant against Germanic threats. Following participation in Trajan's Second Dacian War, the legion moved twice more, first to Aquincum (Budapest) in 103 CE, then finally to Vindobona (Vienna) in 114 CE, where they remained stationed defending the Danube frontier until the 5th century, though vexillationes were periodically sent for campaigns in Judaea, Mauritania, and Parthia. Red clay bricks like these were a common building material in Roman architecture from about the time of Augustus, and making bricks was among the chores for Roman soldiers during their down time.

Description
Berlin: Verlag Gebr. Mann, 1965. Neubearbeitet. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio, 2 vols. Original blue cloth. Overall in excellent antiquarian condition. This is the indispensable second edition of the catalogue of the greatest Costume book collection ever formed: the text consists of more than 1,166 pages; the items are very well described; and the text is illustrated by 221 black and white illustrations. In their day Franz Joseph and Frieda von Lipperheide were the foremost publishers of fashion journals in the world (e.g. "Die Modenwelt," "Die Dame," "Illustrierte Frauen-Zeitung"). At one point their fashion magazine empire required a staff of more than 400 workers. Franz Joseph von Lipperheide (1838-1906) begin forming his costume collection in about 1870, systematically acquiring primary sources and secondary literature about fashion and traditional costume; civil, professional and religious costumes; weapons and uniforms; masks, dance and theatrical costumes, and much more. He also collected books related to weaving and knitting, tailoring, embroidery and other crafts, fashion magazines and illustrated newspapers, almanacs, etc. In 1899 Lipperheide gave his very important library to the Prussian State Library where it resided in a large and beautifully appointed room, the stately bookcases surrounded by choice paintings and miniatures. Among Lipperheide's collection of ca. 5,560 costume books, 45 MSS, and 840 fashion Almanacs are numerous treasures and great rarities. To these we must also add approximately 2,750 drawings, 23,700 individual woodcuts, etchings, and lithographs, plus ca. 2,500 photographs. Lipperheide's 686 paintings and 200 portrait miniatures are now in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin. ¶ B.H. Breslauer copy, with his long inscription on front flyleaf concerning the first edition of the Katalog. Purchased by us at the sale of the famed Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana (Christie's NY 6/27/2005). REFERENCES: Besterman 1504; Colas 1880; Hiler p. 547. NDB.

Description
Paris: Crevot, 1824. First edition. 1824 LANDMARK ILLUSTRATED STUDY OF ASCARIS--ITS LIFE CYCLE WOULD NOT BE DISCOVERED UNTIL A CENTURY LATER. 10 3/4 inches tall hardcover, marbled paper-covered boards, leather spine with gilt title, decorative bookplate of Jean Theodorides to front paste-down, bookplate of Robert L. Chevalier to front free endpaper, vii, 130 pp, 8 fine folding engraved plates. Light wear to spine, covers clean, binding tight, plates bright, very good in custom archival mylar cover. Large intestinal roundworms have been known since antiquity. Eggs have been identified in archeological coprolites across the globe, the oldest ones being more than 24,000 years old. In 1758 Linnaeus named them Ascaris lumbricoides. For many centuries, they were thought to arise by spontaneous generation. In 1855, Ascaris eggs were found in human faeces by Henry Ransom in England. In 1922, Shimesu Koino ingested 2,000 Ascaris lumbricoides eggs, found larvae in his sputum a few days later, then after 50 days took an anthelmintic and recovered 667 immature Ascaris lumbricoides, thus confirming the life cycle. An estimated 1 billion people are currently infected with Ascaris lumbricoides worldwide. The eggs are extremely resistant to strong chemicals, desiccation, and low temperatures and can remain viable in the soil for several months or even years. JULES GERMAIN CLOCQUET (1790-1883) the famed French anatomist, surgeon, and professor, has many eponyms associated with him, including: Cloquet's fascia, Cloquet's gland or lymph node of Cloquet, Cloquet's hernia, Cloquet's ligament, Cloquet's canal, and Cloquet's septum. A man blessed with artistic talents, Cloquet was the author of many theses, as well as anatomical volumes that were comparable to the works of other great anatomists of his time. Cloquet attracted many pupils with his innovative teaching style and implementation of anatomical preparations, drawings, and sketches on the black board with chalk. PROVENANCE: JEAN THEODORIDES (1926-1999) was a parasitologist and a historian of biological and medical sciences. For more than thirty years, he pursued the study of gregarines, a class of Apicomplexa exclusively represented in invertebrates. He will remain the world specialist in these parasitic protozoa to which he has devoted nearly 100 publications. With Pierre-Paul Grassé, in 1955 he undertook the study of gregarines by electron microscopy and it was this material that revealed the presence of ergastoplasm in protozoa. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Description
[Norfolk, VA?]: The board, 1894. Broadside printed on thin, pliant card stock, 11 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches, the head in bold all caps. Most of the regulations deal with the creation of obstacles to public travel, repairing damage, maintenance, etc. (e.g., "No person shall be allowed to fasten a cow or other stock on or near the roadside in such a manner, that the rope, chain, or other fastening may, at any time, be extended on the road"). Not recorded on OCLC. Good copy only of a fragile, late 19th century broadside dealing with road management, a remarkable survival. Paper very browned and brittle, especially at the edges (large chip to upper corner crudely replaced, long horizontal tear rather crudely repaired, both flaws damaging text, but taking only a small portion of one letter, some other edgewear and light chipping); unrelated pencil notes on verso. (#7123).
