Description
Los Angeles, 1933. Very good.. [12]pp. Original yellow wrappers, printed in blue, stapled. Minor dampstaining and dust soiling to wraps. Even tanning internally. A scarce pamphlet printing the articles of incorporation and by-laws of the Filipino World Federation (also known as the Filipino Federation of America), a Filipino-American labor, fraternal, and spiritual organization founded by Hilario Moncado in Los Angeles in 1925. The articles of incorporation are dated 1933, and outline the aims of the group ("To promote Fraternal and Social Welfare...To promote World Peace...Malaysia United...") and names its directors. The by-laws, meanwhile, outline the federation's governing structure, membership rules, dues, voting, amendments, and so forth. Not included is any reference to the religious beliefs of the group, which held its founder Moncado to be a reincarnation of Jesus Christ and ingrained a mystical fetishization of the number twelve. Not in OCLC.

Description
Toronto, Canada: Harbinger Magazine, 1969. First Edition. Fair. Large folio (445 x 290 mm) printed on cheap newsprint (browned and brittle, soiled along horizontal fold, a few short tears). [16] pp. of collages and texts, printed "head-over-heels" so that there are in fact two covers: "Mrclean's - A Harbinger Supplement" and "Eat Shit Magazine - Premier Issue." Preserved in a mylar L-sleeve with lig-free support board. BAFFLING AND INSCRUTABLE CANADIAN HIPPY (YIPPY?) 'ZINE. At it was printed on cheap newsprint in July of 1969, we are not surprised that no other copy can be located. The entire publication is irreverent and anti-establishment, created entirely from diverse collages, "artwork," dubious humor, and odd and unrelated texts. Certainly it ranks low in the many rank 'zines we have encountered, but it has its charm, but moreover it provides information to Toronto hippies about drug prices, a "Freek (sic) Out" in Queen's Park, Toronto, an Ottowa "Be-In," locations of free V.D. clinics in Toronto, etc. Two locations for the publisher of this 'zine are given: one was the Harbinger "head shop" located at 393 Spadina Avenue, Toronto, the other was a P.O. Box. On p. 2 of the "Eat Shit" section of the 'zine we learn that the editors' names were "Maenad" and "The Scribe." On this cover we are told that this is the Premier Issue; were others published? Other questions remain, such as: Who made it? Why was it made? Why was it saved at all?

Description
South Bend, Indiana: Hering House Welfare League, 1942. Very good. 11" x 8½". Stapled wrappers. Pp. 3. Very good: long vertical crease to wrappers extending throughout; wrappers lightly chipped and soiled, lightly toned. This is a rare program which honors the anniversary of an important educational and cultural center for the African American community of South Bend, Indiana, the Hering House. We learned how and why Hering House was founded from a 2016 article by Kevin Tidmarsh in Belt Magazine (https://beltmag.com/theforgotten-legacy-of-buford-gordon/). Tidmarsh was discussing the 1922 book, The Ne*ro In South Bend: A Social Study, written by the Reverend B.F. Gordon. Gordon's book documented the early history and contemporary conditions of South Bend's African American residents. Tidmarsh pointed out that the book's publication had a nearly immediate impact in South Bend as it led directly to two white philanthropists, Frank and Claribel Hering, donating money for a community center for African Americans. Modeled after Chicago's Hull House, Hering House was dedicated in 1925 and served as an exceptionally important gathering place for African Americans in South Bend for nearly 40 years. This program marked Hering House's 17th anniversary. Issued early after the United States entered World War II, the text shared, "In this age when DEFENSE is playing such an active part in the woof and warp of civilization . . . Hering House is called upon as never before in its existence to help shoulder the burden by helping in the DEFENSE of the Ne*ro youth and adult." The book shared the methods and accomplishments of the center, noting club and group activities for different age groups. It commented on providing service in areas such as "inter-racial," health and welfare, housing, recreation and education. It also shared that it needed funds for more space for the gym and physical departments. There were lists of the boards of trustees and directors, as well as the schedule of events and the lyrics to the "Ne*ro National Hymn." Rare source material documenting an important African American community center, not found online or in OCLC. Indiana University South Bend holds a small collection of Hering House materials; it contains a few anniversary celebration programs, but not this year's.

He graduated from Harvard University in 1855, subsequently studying engineering and chemistry, and taking the degree of bachelor of science at the Lawrence scientific school of the same institution in 1857; and in 1859 became an assistant in the United States Coast Survey. (n.p.): In Pro. Very Good. (c.1974). First Edition. Softcover. [moderate edgewear to covers, scuffing to rear cover next to spine]. Trade PB INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the inside front cover: "For Mort / I sincerely hope / the poems bring / some joy and / understanding of / our great game of / football, / Tom Bass." Yep, despite the locker-room real dope suggested by the book's title -- not to mention the full-rage aggression displayed by the cover photo of the author -- this is in fact a slim volume of poetry, in what one might call the Athletic Brutalist School. (I just made that up.) Sample stanza: "There can be no doubt / who will be the loser / in the end / but I / I would have it / no other way / Pro Football / is my way of life / and part of me shall die / the year / I can no longer play." There's a little poignancy to that last stanza, in fact, since the author's playing career was cut short when contracted polio in college. However, he did go on to enjoy a 30-year career in various coaching capacities at both the college and pro levels (including stints as Defensive Coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the San Diego Chargers for eight seasons in the late 1970s-early 1980s). One of his first gigs as a coach was with the Cincinnati Bengals in 1969, so it's appropriate that the book's Foreword is by the Sports Editor of the Cincinnati Post. Signed by Author .
