Miyako Meisho Zue 都名所圖會 (都名所図会) 5 of 6 vols Akisato Ritō 秋里籬島, author & Takehara Shunchōsai 竹原信繁 (竹原朝斎), artist Yoshinoya Ihachi 吉野家為八, publisher Kyōto 1786 [Temmei 6] Kyōto, Yoshinoya Ihachi 吉野家為八, publisher. A 6 volume title, lacking volume 5, thus incomplete. 27.2 x 18.7 cm. String-bound, Japanese-style, fukuro-toji. The colophon lists the original edition as being from 1780 [An'ei 9] and the copy at hand a "recut, reprinted" expanded edition published in 1786 [Temmei 6]. In the original covers with printed paper title labels. There is a final 2 page advertisement for the publisher's other "meishoki" geographical gazetteers. Takehara Shunchōsai 竹原信繁 (竹原朝斎) was considered an expert in the genre of meishoki, and this particular work “shows how the guide drew the attention of the traveller to every kind of entertainment, to establishments for arts and crafts, refreshment houses and the like.” See Jack Hillier, “The Art of the Japanese Book” pp. 562-3. The covers are a bit worn and soiled; the binding string is broken on vol 1. The printing is good overall; the interior clean. Very useful, and a very interesting guide to the Kyōto area in the late 18th century.
