Description
Washington DC: Institute of Inter-American Transportation, 1947. First edition. Original pictorial paper wraps stapled at spine. 199 pages with multiple illustrations and charts. Gently toned, but overall a tight, pleasing copy. With provenance from Ayn Rand's library, and including 45 pages annotated in pencil by Ayn Rand as she conducted research for what would become her most influential work, Atlas Shrugged. Atlas Shrugged, Rand's fourth, final, and longest novel, depicts a dystopian America where reason, individualism, and capitalism have been set aside in favor of government control and coercion. At the book's center are railroad heiress Dagny Taggart, her steel magnate lover Hank Rearden, and Rand's unforgettable non-conformist hero John Galt. Railroads and trains become more than a backdrop for the action, functioning as a symbol of all that Objectivism can bring to a crumbling collectivist U.S. For this reason, Rand's research into the rail industry was crucial -- and The United States Railway Mission to Mexico provided her with in depth information about the industry. Documenting American efforts to restore and repair railway lines through Mexico, the report contains background on the project's mission and organization, cost and investment numbers, and details on the work done and its results. Throughout in pencil, Rand scores key areas of interest, at times leaving exclamation and question marks for particularly important sections. Of note are sections about insurance premiums on trains and their cargo, the use of trains to ship strategic mineral and mined materials, the acquisition of motor-power vehicles and diesel engines, and the need for rail systems to supply industry particularly in wartime. A unique and important example of Rand's research for her magnum opus, this copy of The United States Railway Mission sold at Bonham's auction in 2005 for $9,987. Bonham's lot 3205 (2005). Provenance: From the private collection of Jay T. Snider.

Description
Poet and artist e. e. cummings sketched a full length woman dressed in tight fighting clothing wearing a hat and holding a handbag, standing with hand on hip seeming to look down. A small group of people is suggested in the distance. The drawing is rendered in pencil on thin artists paper measuring almost 8 1/4 x 10 1/4. The poet and artist signed in pencil in his typical small hand in the lower left, "cummings." Another small signature appears in the lower right. .

Description
Silk covered boards. Good. N.d., circa 1850. 12mo, 16 by 12 cm. Each painting mounted on thin paper and framed with blue strips, as typical of such albums made presumably for the tourist and expatriate market. The paintings have a disarming naive quality. Yet in our view the paintings have more color and detail than the average such album of this size (larger format pictures tend to be more nuanced when it comes to this genre). The silk patterned cover has had its joints repaired. The usual amount of fissures, or tears, to the pith paper. Most of the paintings have no or very light defects of this type.

Description
1924. Yule, G. Udny (1871-1951). A mathematical theory of evolution, based on the conclusions of Dr. J. C. Willis, F.R.S. Offprint from Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, series B, 213 (1924). 21-87pp. 304 x 232 mm. Original printed wrappers. Fine. First Edition, Offprint Issue. In this landmark paper British statistician G. Utny Yule introduced the Yule process (now known as preferential attachment process), along with the Yule distribution (now known as the Yule-Simon distribution) as a means of mathematically analyzing evolutionary processes. "A preferential attachment process is a stochastic urn process, meaning a process in which discrete units of wealth, usually called "balls," are added in a random or partly random fashion to a set of objects or containers, usually called "urns." A preferential attachment process is an urn process in which additional balls are added continuously to the system and are distributed among the urns as an increasing function of the number of balls the urns already have . . . " classic example of this is the growth in the number of species per genus in some higher taxon of biotic organisms. New genera ("urns") are added to a taxon whenever a newly appearing species is considered sufficiently different from its predecessors that it does not belong in any of the current genera. New species ("balls") are added as old ones speciate (i.e., split in two) and, assuming that new species belong to the same genus as their parent (except for those that start new genera), the probability that a new species is added to a genus will be proportional to the number of species the genus already has. This process, first studied by British statistician Udny Yule [emphasis ours], is a linear preferential attachment process, since the rate at which genera accrue new species is linear in the number they already have. "Linear preferential attachment processes in which the number of urns increases are known to produce a distribution of balls over the urns following the so-called Yule distribution"(Wikipedia, "Preferential attachment"). .

Description
iv+380 pages with illustrations, diagrams, tables, and index. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 6 1/4") bound in half brown leather with gilt lettering to spine and blue marbled boards. From the library of Dino Ruggieri. Volume XIII (13). (Betts: 7-25). First edition. The Chess Monthly of Great Britain was one of the first to give properly annotated games. The principal editor, Leopold Hoffer, was helped enormously by having Johannes Hermann Zukertort as co-editor until his death in 1888. There were four regular sections: news, annotated games, problems and endgames. In addition, Hoffer carried on a profoundly bitter feud with his one-time benefactor, Wilhelm Steinitz. This publication should not be confused with The Chess Monthly published in the United States which was short lived from 1857-1862 and edited by Fiske and Morphy.Dino Ruggieri was born in, a small city in the Buenos Aires province, October 22, 1921. His parents were both Italians, natives of Porto D'Ascoli. In their early years in Argentina, the Ruggieri's family lived in the country, located about 45 miles from his birth city. The family was engaged in agriculture. When Ruggieri was 8, his father purchased a home in his birth city, where he lived until 2008. In 1938 he was involved in an accident and he was transferred to Buenos Aires for recovery. This was the beginning of his hobby of chess, both as a player over the board and by correspondence, but as well as a major collector of chess materials. After his recovery he became a prominent local chess player and very good representative in postal chess, where he represented Argentina in matches against Italy, Yugoslavia, Holland and other countries. He was using the correspondence with his rivals to offer exchanges. Ruggieri was related to Mr Niemeijer and soon began exchanging materials and making important purchases. He also had frequent contacts with Gregorio Lastra, Normando Ivaldi, Gaspar Soria and Carlos De Veyga, all known collectors of chess. He died in 2009 at the age of 88.Condition:Corners bumped, Ruggieri's stamp to front end paper, some foxing else a very good copy of a scarce item.

New York/Toronto: Longmans, Green and Co.. Fair. 1931. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket, but encased in a nice-looking facsimile reproduction of the original first edition jacket; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [considerable shelfwear, bumping and fraying at all corners, external soiling, red spine lettering dulled, light staining along right side of front cover]. (pen & ink frontispiece drawing) A werewolf thriller set in a small village in New York's Hudson Valley in the late 18th century. The trouble starts when a mysterious French count, said to be fleeing the Revolution's guillotine, moves into the village, shortly after which there commences a series of grisly killings perpetrated by a mysterious wolf-life creature -- which eventually turns out to be the Count himself, in his lycanthropical form. (First clue: his name is the Comte de Saint Loup.) A parallel narrative thread involves a romantic triangle that develops around another newcomer to the village, the beautiful Felicity Paige, as the Count and a local swain compete for her affections. This erstwhile young fellow enlists the help of the local minister (an occult buff) and Felicity's Haitian maid (well-versed in werewolf-fighting folklore, it seems) to track down and kill the murderous beast. NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, which has not been factored in to our pricing. .
