Description
Venetia: appresso Pontio Bernardon, 1682. 12mo.  155 x 75 mm., [6 x 3 inches].  [12], 115 pp.  Illustrated with a woodcut vignette on the title-page, head- and tailpieces, and floriated initial letters.  Bound in contemporary brown calf; joints expertly restored, textblock tight within the binding.  This copy has two old manuscript ownership notes at the bottom of the title-page, one dated 1807. Extremely rare first Italian edition, of these famous Portuguese love letters attributed to Marianna Alcoforado, a Franciscan nun who passionately fell in love with Noel Bouton, the Marquis of Chamilly, a military man whose seduction is documented in this series of eleven letters.  It was originally printed in Paris in 1669 and over the centuries has gone through well over one hundred editions in all European languages.  Published anonymously, the extraordinary nature of these letters, five from Alcoforado and six from Bouton, has intrigued scholars for centuries.  Speculation as to who the nun was the subject of numerous articles and reviews.  But it was not until 1810 when Jean François Boissonade, the French historian, discovered Marianna’s name written in a copy of the first edition by a contemporary hand. “The veracity of this ascription has been placed beyond doubt by the recent investigations of Luciano Cordeiro, who found a tradition in Beja connecting the French captain and the Portuguese nun.” In his article in the Encyclopaedia Brittanica Edgar Prestage writes of the passionate nature of Alcoforado letters: “The letters to her lover which have earned her renown in literature were written between December 1667 and June 1668, and they describe the successive stages of faith, doubt, and despair through which she passed.  As a piece of unconscious psychological self-analysis, they are unsurpassed; as a product of the Peninsular heart they are unrivalled.  These five short letters written by Marianna to “expostulate her desertion” form one of the few documents of extreme human experience, and reveal a passion which in the course of two centuries has lost nothing of its heat.” This Italian edition is very rare.  It is not cited in the Italian Union Catalogue; OCLC cites only the copy in the BnF and NUC cites the copy at the Library of Congress as the only copy in America.  M. Pelaez, entry “Marianna Alcoforado” in Enciclopedia Italiana,  1929.  F. C. Green, “Who as the Author of the ‘Lettres Portugaises’.  The Modern Language Review vol. 21 No 2 (April, 1926), pp. 159-167.  .

Description
Paris: chez Claude-Antoine Jombert, 1775. 8vo.  195 x 120 mm., [7 ¾ x 4 ¾ inches].  iv, 500 pp.  Illustrated with 6 folding plates with numerous diagrams.  Bound in contemporary mottled calf, lightly rubbed at the edges.  A sound and attractive copy. First in French, originally published in Milan in 1748 in two quarto volumes under the title Instituzioni analitiche ad uso della gioventù italiana,.  It is considered the first book on differential and integral calculus written by either a man or a woman and its publication brought Agnesi international recognition.  Although the title suggests that the book was written for the “use of Italian youth” it was a highly sophisticated and detailed presentation including algebraic equations, and thermos of finite and infinitesimal quantities.  The six plates illustrate her ideas.  This French edition was translated by P. T. d’Antelmy, with additions by Charles Bossut.  It was followed in England in 1801, translated by John Colson, the Lucansian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge.  Maria Agnesi (1718-1794) was born into a wealthy family in Milan. She was identified as a child prodigy and her father encouraged her to study and introduced her to many of the most prominent thinkers in Milan. By her teen years she was fluent in seven languages.  While maintaining her father’s household, she pursued her studies at the University of Bologna, where after the publication of her book was the first women appointed to the faculty. After the death of her father in the 1750's she dedicated herself and her income to the poor of Milan and was recognized by the city fathers for her contributions. Dictionary of Scientific Biography I. pp. 75.  Essay by Edna Kramer.  Riccardi, Biblioteca mathematica Italiani, I, p. 83.   .

Description
Worcester: Published by Edward Livermore, 1852. Large 4to.  280 x 215 mm., [11 x 8 ½ inches]. 148 pp.  Illustrated with 200 plates of plans, elevations, details, and practical stair-building on 54 plates and in the text.  Contemporary sheep, Black leather label with title in gilt on spine; some rubbing to binding; text block clean and bright; six examples of dried leaves inserted and now removed, causing browning to paper stock on verso and recto of the page.  Ownership inscription in pencil of "Harvey Bricknell, Barnard Vt." on front free endpaper. With faults a very good, sound copy in original binding. Fifth edition, revised and enlarged with new plates and a chapter on rural architecture.  Original issued in 1848, Brown's work became a standard manual for carpenters and builders and went through at least six editions, the final one being printed in 1854.  Brown was a practicing Lowell, Ma. architect, whose goal was to produce a manual, written in simple terms, which explains the techniques of construction without the complexity of a treatise on architecture.  Interesting text which places some focus on existing home built in Worcester and surrounding area, with details of construction and design patterns. Hitchcock, American Architectural Books, 217 (for 1851 edition). .

Description
Andover (Mass.): Flagg and Gould ....Printers, 1830. 12mo.  200 x 125 mm., [8 x 5 inches].  36 pp., missing half of the final leaf affecting about 20 lines of titles. Stitched as issued, uncut and unopened. Paper stock soiled, showing some tide marks.  Rare little pamphlet codifying the book collection formed by debating two societies that were part of the Andover Theological Seminary.  The Seminary was formed in 1807 by disaffected members of Harvard College after the election of a Unitarian to the School of Divinity.  This conservative school of divinity built a campus as part of Phillips Academy in Andover and thrived there for nearly a century. The catalogue is organized in two parts, the first describes the library of the Porter Rhetorical Society, followed by the library of the Society of Inquiry.  The subject categories are the same for both societies and include civil history, ecclesiastical history, biography, geography and travel, religious miscellany, theology, philosophy and ethics, law and politics, English classics, natural history, criticism, and fiction, letters, poetry, Latin classics, Greek classics, German, French and Italian works. With faults, this is a rare catalogue of two provincial libraries, well printed and extremely informative..
