Description
Moscow: Izobrazitel'noe iskusstvo, 1972. Very good. Folio (380 x 285 mm). Complete with 34 plates (of which 16 are double page), each of which has descriptive text in Russian on verso. TOGETHER WITH: 36-page booklet in Russian (cover with light brown offsetting from cardboard inside portfolio pocket). Original publisher's blue vinyl portfolio with a mounted enameled metal medallion on the front (short split at the top of the pocket). SEE THE NUMEROUS IMAGES ON OUR WEBSITE. SOVIET "SCIENCE FICTION" SPACE ART OF THE HIGHEST ORDER. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST GLORIOUS EXPRESSIONS OF THE SPACE RACE, A STRANGE AND WONDERFUL PORTFOLIO WHICH CONTAINS 34 SOVIET COSMONAUT FANTASIES, RENDERING IN SILVER AND COLOR THE FUTURE OF SOVIET SPACE TRAVEL AND COMMUNIST INHABITATION OF THE GALAXY. OUR COPY IS ABSOLUTELY COMPLETE AND IS PRESERVED IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION. Included are fabulous imaginary spacewalks, wild satellite constructions, curious spacecraft, dreamy constellations, and unexplored planets and moons. This is a masterpiece of Soviet propaganda of the 1970s in which is depicted in full color a sense of unbridled ambition, optimism, technology, and limitless resources. Whereas the first man on the Moon was obviously American, it is clear from the present portfolio that nothing could or would prevent the Russian government from leading mankind deep into the galaxy. On the verso of each plate are long descriptions of the illustrations and the hopes and dreams of the compilers. One of our favorites is Plate no. 5 (Cosmonauts); loosely translated, a portion of the text reads: "Man went out into outer space! A man is swimming in space, hovering over the planet! The significance of this event can hardly be overestimated. To create large orbital stations in open space it will be necessary to carry out extensive assembly and installation work. [In the future] there will be professions of "space installers" and "space assemblers." The daughters of the Earth will master them and create entire settlements in near-Earth orbits, which Konstantin Tsiolkovsky dreamed about. This is the meaning of the first step into space, which was taken by one of the authors of this picture. [Signed] Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov." NB: Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935) is considered the founding father of rocketry and cosmonautics. Although he never built a functional rocket, his theoretical work provided the foundation for the entire Soviet space program. The author was the pioneering cosmonaut who made the first spacewalk, exiting the capsule during the Voskhod 2 mission for 12 minutes and 9 seconds. He was selected to be the first Soviet person to land on the Moon although as is well known the project was cancelled. Arthur C. Clarke dedicated "2010: Odyssey Two" to Leonov and Soviet physicist Andrei Sakharov. Leonov worked closely with Russian space artist Andrei Sokolov (1931-2007) on this and similar Galleries of the Future. The work was issued on the 15th Anniversary of the launching of the Sputnkik. One of the images is Sokolov's painting entitled "Manned Orbital Station" and consists of two parts. On the left is depicted is the Soyuz 11 in full color, and on the right a future orbital station printed black and silver, indicating a connection between the real and the possible. The color / silver and black motif is expressed in all 16 double-page plates, with remarkable effect. For other equally fantastic paintings by Sokolov, see "Soviet Space Art: Soviet Space Program by Andrei Sokolov" and "Space Art: The Space Fantasy of Andrei Sokolov" (DrewExMachina website). ¶ Scarce: Worldcat lists only four copies in America (LC, Smithsonian, Univ. Georgia, and Northwestern (through our agency). PROVENANCE: Onscription inside front cover of the portfolio (in Russian): "Dina Pakharova on her 20th Birthday [the gift of] Olga & Sergey 27.09.74" MUST BE SEEN TO BE FULLY APPRECIATED.

Description
Paris: Librairie des Amateurs, F. Ferroud, 1912. Very good. 8vo. 54, [2] pp. Fine engraved frontispiece, vignettes by Leon Lebegue. Contemporary red niger morocco (upper cover with two light scratches), lower turn-in with gilt pallet-stamp "M. Marshall" upper cover with the monogram, crest and motto of the first owner Lily E.C. Routh, five raised bands on spine, title and date lettered in gilt in the second and sixth compartments, pale green and pink marbled pastedowns and endpapers, original printed wrappers bound in, t.e.g. With the large Pre-Raphaelite bookplate of Lily E.C. Routh pasted on the front free endleaf. A BINDING OF RESTRAINED ELEGANCE BY MAUD MARSHALL, MEMBER OF THE GUILD OF WOMEN BINDERS, FOR LILY ROUTH, COLLECTOR OF FRENCH ILLUSTRATED BOOKS AND PATRON OF THE GUILD. The name "M. Marshall" was known to Marianne Tidcombe (Women Bookbinders 1880-1920, pp. 171-2), who provided a very good preliminary assessment of "Miss" Marshall's career, noting her membership in the Guild of Women Binders, and that she was a binder and teacher, first in Bloomsbury Square (where Sangorski and Sutcliffe had their first bindery) and then in Denmark Street (where Cockerell had his first studio). However, it was not until 2024 that "M. Marshall" was positively identified as Emily Maud Marshall, thanks to the heroic research by Philippa Marks of the British Library published in her "Untold Lives" blog (17 Dec 2024): "In careers articles and exhibition reviews, women binders are often referred to as 'Miss' plus surname. Miss M. Marshall, the binder of Library's newly acquired copy of William Morris's Poems (1908) has proved difficult to research, but we can reveal her identity." Emily Maud Marshall was born in 1869 in Yokohama. Based in London during the first decade of the 20th century, she worked as a bookbinder in collaboration with Edith Gedye. Their binding styles were influenced by William Morris and T.J. Cobden-Sanderson's Arts and Crafts movement (as were many contemporary hand binders) but it is not known who taught them. The pair exhibited their bindings at Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society shows in 1903 and 1906. From 1904 to 1907, the bookseller Bain helped them sell their work. Newspaper articles indicate that they submitted their bindings to many amateur and professional competitions, and they regularly received first prizes, certificates and honorable mentions. Marshall contributed a noteworthy article on bookbinding in the Fingerpost "Guide to the Professions and Occupations of Educated Women" (1906). She writes: "Of the many careers opened of late years to women, bookbinding is perhaps the one most attractive in point of interest, combining as it does physical, mental and artistic effort. Whether it is a lucrative career must depend entirely upon the individual." A career in artistic bookbinding could certainly be an uphill struggle for women. Marshall and Gedye also offered lessons in bookbinding, which not only provided an increased income stream for the business but also gave experience to those not otherwise able to learn the craft (NB: women were not usually eligible for apprenticeships at this time). Marshall herself offered three-, six- and twelve-month courses of instruction. In 1910 it would appear that the pair had begun to work independently: Gedye moved to Bristol while Marshall continued to rent business premises in London. By 1921, Census records show Marshall in Ware, Hertfordshire, "not occupied for a living." She died in Aldingbourne, Sussex, in 1940. In this edition of Musset's "Les Nuits" appears a GORGEOUS Symbolist engraving by E. Pennequin after a design by O.D.V. Guillonet (1872-1967). This dark interior scene of the poete maudit and his Muse is completely opposite the dreamy and colorful beach and garden scenes for which Guillonet is best known. Ours is copy no. 399 on velin teinte d'Arches, from a total edition of 1000, initialled by the publisher F. Ferroud. PROVENANCE: Lily E.C. Routh (her monogram and motto on upper cover ("Incorrupta fides"; her bookplate on front free endleaf designed by E.M. Blake, 1907). IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.

Description
London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1953 Illustrated with 56 photographic plates, 8 in color and 48 in black and white, on coated stock. First edition, first printing. Publisher's blue cloth lettered in gilt, top edge stained dark blue; in the original wraparound pictorial dust jacket with illustration of Mount Everest by W. Heaton Cooper. Near fine book, with light dimming to spine gilt, gentle lean to spine, a hint of staining to top right corner of front board, top corner of rear board lightly bumped, light spotting to fore edge of text block, light offsetting to endpapers, and contemporary gift inscription to front free endpaper; very good unclipped dust jacket, with clean panels, light toning to spine, a few nicks to spine ends, and some wear to upper corners. Overall, a handsome copy. The Ascent of Everest is the story of the 1953 British Mount Everest expedition's successful climb of the mountain, recounted by the leader of the expedition, Colonel John Hunt. This expedition, the eighth attempt in 30 years to make mountaineering history, employed two sets of climbers; the first pair finished just short of the summit, but provided enough extra resources and information to enable the second pair, comprised of New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Tenzing Norgay, to successfully reach Everest's summit. The Ascent of Everest is divided into six sections that mirror the stages of the expedition: "Part I: Background," "Part II: Planning," "Part III: Approach," "Part IV: Build-Up," "Part V: Assault," and "Part VI: Aftermath." While the bulk of the text was written by Hunt, Sir Edmund Hillary authored Chapter 16, "The Summit." Hunt wrote this account in only one month to meet public demand for an account of the epic expedition.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
