Description
New York: Works Publishing Company, 1955. Second edition. Very Good. Warmly inscribed by Bill Wilson on the upper free endpaper: "Dear Marylin, This in great affection and in [illegible] gratitude for your dedication to all that is AA. Always, Bill. 7/21/60." A Very Good copy. Publisher's blindstamped blue cloth. Some sunning to spine, spot of fading to edge of lower board, and a couple blemishes to lower board. Endpapers lightly toned. Still, a solid copy with an exceptional inscription by one of the co-authors. Housed in a custom quarter leather clamshell case. First published in 1939, Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered from Alcoholism has become one of the most popular books of all time, selling more than thirty million copies and inspiring one of America's most enduring social movements. William Griffith Wilson, also known as Bill W., and Robert "Dr. Bob" Smith were inspired to write the "Big Book" by their own paths to sobriety, a method that would later become known as the "twelve-step program." The Big Book has since been translated into numerous languages and was designated by the Library of Congress as one of the eighty-eight books that shaped America. The book went through sixteen printings between 1939 and 1955 before appearing in this second, revised edition, which bore the subtitle, The Story of How Many Thousands of Men and Women Have Recovered from Alcoholism. Very Good.

Description
38 pp. 8vo (190 x 125 mm.), early 20th-cent. cloth-backed marbled boards, title on spine. Paris: Dumanoir & Paillet, 1826. An uncommon auction catalogue describing the collection of Thibault (1757-1826), an artist and architect well-known for his vivid architectural drawings. He served as architect of the palaces at Neuilly and the Elysée, and was appointed professor of perspective at the Ecole des beaux-arts in 1819. Paillet has contributed a short biographical sketch for Thibault at the beginning of this volume. This catalogue describes 367 lots, the majority of which consist of paintings, preparatory and finished drawings, and prints done by Thibault. These works are categorized by their subject matter, such as aqueducts, mountains, bridges, interiors, bodies of water, etc. Lots 242-367 constitute Thibault’s choice library of the great works on architecture, decorative arts, Greek and Roman history, etc. In fine condition. Ownership inscription of Marcel Nicolle (1871-1934), curator at the Louvre and critic, on the title-page, and stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim on verso of title. ❧ Lugt 11291. Oxford Art Online.

Folio, 18" x 15". 109pp; half-bound in maroon leather with pebbled and blind stamped cloth over board, gilt stamped title to front cover; engraved and hand-colored maps, engraved illustrations in the text; 1 black and white engraving, 44 full page colored maps, many with multiple maps on the page and 14 double page colored maps; vertical creasing to front free endpaper and title page, (most likely from closing the volume improperly), light foxing to endpapers; very good plus in restored condition, see description of restoration. WorldCat libraries show 2 holdings of this edition. Williamson 9592. The atlas has been professionally restored by bookbinder, Julie Stackpole (Thomaston, Maine). The tear on the fold-out map of Maine (where it is attached into the spine across the closet quadrant of the map) has been repaired with paste scarf-joining sides of tear and Document repair tape, mostly on verso. The title page and last page have had Japanese tissue repair over the stapled areas and have been trimmed. Creases on the title page and front fly have been smoothed with Document tape over them. The board corners and spine have been restored with marron Niger goatskin; new cloth under old at corners where worn; a small tear in the backboard cloth was mended. A compilation of maps of the state of Maine with a listing of makers in the Preface; the title page states an 1890 copyright but the atlas front cover states the date as 1898-9. An exciting and important atlas in the growth and development of the state of Maine; timber maps give a glimpse at that important industry. Two double page maps from Frank Gray are included: Gray's New Map of the United States, 1897 and Gray's New Map of the World in Hemispheres..., 1879. An interesting campus map of the University of Maine is included. The last 5 pages are an interesting directory of "Business Firms and Professional Men in the State".

Description
Pittsfield, Mass: [The Church]; Chickering & Axtell, Steam Printers, 1877. Octavo (23.5 x 15 cm.), 87, [i] pages. Advertisements. Cover title: Cook Book. FIRST EDITION. An attractively printed church cookbook from the seat of Berkshire County in the westernmost region of Massachusetts, with some three hundred fifty unattributed recipes. Warranting notice: Black Bean Soup, Onion Pie, Vegetable Plum Pudding, (Baked) Raspberry Sandwich, Whortleberry Cake, Rice Meringue, Brandy Peaches, and Blackberry Wine. The graceful Congregational Church at 110 South Street had a rocky start, its original structure consumed by fire in September 1849 just before its completion. But completed it was, delayed by only a year. Twice subsequently (in 1859 and 1882) its steeple fell victim to gale winds. In 1877 South Church found itself unable to install a permanent pastor, and it may well be that the Cook Book helped to remove indebtedness and place finances on a secure footing – which in the event was achieved in 1885, when a new pastor settled into the post. The congregation not only recovered and rebuilt, but grew steadily, and flourishes still, famous locally for an ambitious pantry program that serves hundreds. Front hinge shaken, and some signatures pulling. In gilt-lettered, green publisher's; light wear to head and foot of spine, corners lightly bumped, otherwise near fine. [OCLC locates five copies; Cook, page 107; not in Brown or Cagle].
