Description
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1903. First edition. Fine/Very Good +. First printing, with "July, 1903" on the copyright page. A Fine copy in Very Good+ dust jacket. Complete, with the frontispiece and ten color plates. Publisher's pictorial green cloth stamped in color. Pinpoint burn mark to p. 135. A clean, fresh copy throughout. Dust jacket with subtle tissue reinforcement to verso at folds. Some faint white paint spatters to front panel. A very attractive example of London's beloved novel. A Klondike Gold Rush adventure novel told from the point of view of the dog Buck, The Call of the Wild is also a consideration of the thin line that separates "civilized" creatures from their primal origins. Though he begins life as the pampered and much-loved pet of a California gentleman, Buck is stolen and forced into service as a sled dog in the Alaska Yukon. The lowest-ranking member of his pack, Buck faces abuse from his incompetent human owners as well as violence within his team as the dogs jockey for higher positions that aide their survival. Ultimately, Buck must relinquish his individualistic tameness to find his place as a trustworthy team leader and he must tap into the most primitive tendencies that lay dormant inside him. Fine in Very Good + dust jacket.

Description
London: Printed for J. Johnson, 1786. First edition. Very Good +. Octavo (leaves measuring 195 x 115 mm). [viii], 334 pp. A Very Good copy, remarkably clean and fresh throughout. Appears to be lacking upper free endpaper, otherwise complete, with the errata leaf and the blanks. Unrestored contemporary tree calf with some edgewear, spine a bit rubbed, with upper joint beginning to separate at head (still holding firm). Early armorial bookplate of the Earl of Clare to upper pastedown and small ink ownership inscription (dated 1972) to preliminary blank. Leaf O3 with a tear, neatly repaired, with no loss of text. Overall a very appealing example. The first edition of William Beckford's Gothic novel Vathek, first written in French and here translated by Beckford's literary collaborator, Samuel Henley, who also supplied over a hundred pages of commentary. This edition predates the first appearance of the text in French, which was published in Lausanne in December of 1786 (but with a title-page dated 1787). The novel, which tells the story of the titular Caliph's corruption by a djinn and his journey into hell, stands as an early example of the Gothic genre, appearing between Walpole's Castle of Otranto (1765) and the works of Anne Radcliffe in the 1790s. Vathek went on to inspire Byron, Keats, Poe, and Lovecraft, the latter of whom called the novel, "Classic in merit, and markedly different from its fellows because of its foundation in the Oriental tale rather than the Walpolesque Gothic novel...Beckford, well read in Eastern romance, caught the atmosphere with unusual receptivity; and in his fantastic volume reflected very potently the haughty luxury, sly disillusion, bland cruelty, urbane treachery, and shadowy spectral horror...His seasoning of the ridiculous seldom mars the force of his sinister theme, and the tale marches onward with a phantasmagoric pomp in which the laughter is that of skeletons feasting under Arabesque domes" (Lovecraft, "Supernatural Horror in Literature"). See Kenneth W. Graham, "Vathek in English and French," in Studies in Bibliography 28 (1975) pp. 153-166. Very Good +.

Description
King George V died on January 20, 1936, and his son and successor, Edward VIII, was proclaimed King the next day. The period of mourning for the dead King followed, and the new monarch’s Coronation was set for May 13, after mourning would be concluded. The Archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Church of England, traditionally officiates at coronations, and Edward would be crowned and invested with the regalia of Kingship.Edward was in a relationship with divorcee Wallis Simpson. He had never hid this fact, but he started flaunting that relationship the day he was proclaimed King. When he took her to the Mediterranean that August, acting before the world as if she were already Queen, many were horrified. With Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin and Geoffrey Dawson, the editor of the Times of London, he began a campaign to remove the King from office unless he gave up Wallis. The pressure on the new King escalated, and he abdicated on December 13. He was named Duke of Windsor, and after marrying Wallis, she became the Duchess of Windsor.Their official notecard, signed by him “Edward, Duke of Windsor,” and her “Wallis, Duchess of Windsor.”
