Description
Mainz: Peter Schoeffer, 10 September, 1474. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. A fine copy, in an impressive binding, of the first edition, printed by Gutenberg’s apprentice, Peter Schoeffer. Bound in contemporary Bamberg blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards [Kyriss 006, EBDB w000078, Bamberg Minoritenkloster], with flyleaves from vellum manuscript antiphonal, brass catch-plates with sphinxes, straps and clasps intact. Wormholes to both boards, endpapers renewed, binding a little soiled. Incipit and printer’s device printed in red. Rubricated throughout, some of the initials with flourishes, red paragraph marks and capital strokes. Text in overall fine condition with minor worming to first and last two quires, mostly little holes and two very short (1 cm) trails entering the text. Occasional fingersoiling and stains. Provenance: erased inscription on first leaf – acquired from Lathrop C. Harper, Inc, New York, 27 March 1956. 212 sermons on the Ten Commandments by the Dutch mystic Hendrik Herp, whose writings had a profound impact on later mystical writers, including Francisco de Osuna, who in turn influenced St. Teresa of Jesus. His works might also have influenced St. John of the Cross. Herp’s mysticism concerned the Inquisition, who placed his books on the Index. This edition was printed by Peter Schoeffer, who began his printing career as Gutenberg’s apprentice. Schoeffer is considered, after Gutenberg, “the most influential individual in the early history of printing in Europe.” From 1445, Herp was a rector of the Brothers of the Common Life in Delft and, later, in Gouda, where he encouraged book production in particular. In 1450, on a pilgrimage to Rome, he joined the Franciscan Observance (the Capuchin reform) at the Convent of Ara Coeli. Upon his return to northern Europe, he served in several posts for the Franciscan Observants of the Cologne Province, including as provincial of the Province of Cologne (1470–73), then as guardian of the convent of Mechlin in present-day Belgium, where he died in 1477. Peter Schoeffer: “After Johannes Gutenberg (c. 1397–1468), Peter Schoeffer was the most influential individual in the early history of printing in Europe. Born about 1425 in Gernsheim, near Mainz, educated at Erfurt University, and trained as a calligrapher in Paris, Schoeffer had become involved in the new art of printing by 1455, serving as an employee of Johann Fust of Mainz, who was then financing Gutenberg’s “work of the books” – doubtless the printing of the Gutenberg Bible. As Gutenberg’s helper, later as Fust’s junior partner, and finally on his own, Schoeffer remained at the forefront of Europe’s printers for the better part of five decades, producing an impressive array of essential theological and legal editions. Before his death in 1503, he had done more than any other to introduce important publishing innovations and to set technical standards that would shape the history of the printed word… “Peter Schoeffer’s role in the production of the Gutenberg Bible is not documented directly, but his training as a calligrapher, his close association with Fust c. 1455, and his expertise as an independent printer after Fust’s death in 1466 all suggest that he was a central participant in the early development of European printing.” (Peter Schoeffer: Printer of Mainz. A Quincentenary Exhibition at Bridwell Library, displayed from 8 September to 8 December 2003) Among Schoeffer’s accomplishments are, together with his partner Johann Fust, of the 1457 and 1459 Latin Psalters, the 1462 Bible, and the 1465 Cicero (possibly the first printed Classical text); and, on his own, the third printing (using Gutenberg’s types) of the Mainz Catholicon (ca. 1469).

Tancrede, in five acts and a prologue to a libretto by Antoine Danchet after Torquato Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberate, was first performed in Paris at the Académie Royale de Musique at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal under the direction of Marin Marais on 7 November 1702. Considered a 'chef-d'oeuvre' by Rameau, the work, Campra's best-known lyric tragedy, was performed regularly until 1764. It marks the first appearance of a contralto on the French lyric stage.

Copenhagen: Gyldendal, 1913. First edition. Near Fine. Octavo. Original publisher's pictorial green cloth lettered in gilt. Half-tone frontispiece (with tissue guard), black and white illustrations after photographs and line drawings throughout, large folding coloured regional map in end pocket. Extremities a little bumped, gilt on spine slightly dulled, otherwise an excellent, Near Fine example, internally fresh and clean and pleasingly not ex-library (as is often found with this title). An important account of Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, one praised and supported by T. E. Lawrence who was instrumental in the publication of the unillustrated English edition of 1916. The work stands as the lone account of Kuwait from this period. The journey cost Raunkiaer his health, dying from tuberculosis soon after returning in 1915. The large folding map is of Eastern Saudi Arabia (including Riyadh), Southern Iraq and Kuwait. "Early in 1912, the Dane Barclay Raunkiaer travelled in eastern Arabia on behalf of the Royal Danish Geography Society to reconnoiter for a proposed Danish expedition into the Southern desert. Various parts of Raunkiaer's route (Kuwait-Buraida-Riyadh-al-Hufuf-'Ujair) coincided with parts of the journeys of Palgrave (1862), Guarmani (1864), Pelly (1865), Doughty (1878) and Shakespear. Raunkiaer's scientific intentions were largely thwarted by practical problems, but his account of Kuwait in 1912 was praised by T.E. Lawrence, and he was the first European to visit Riyadh for fifty years. In Riyadh he met 'Abd al-Rahman Ibn Sa'ud father of Abd al-'Aziz Ibn Sa'ud. While in Kuwait Raunkiaer became seriously ill; he never recovered, and he died in 1915 aged twenty-five" (Cottrell, p. 119). Alvin J. Cottrell, ed.,The Persian Gulf States: A General Survey, 1980. Near Fine.

Description
Florence: Société Calcographique, 1803. Very good. Two prints, matted and framed (frame sizes approx. 460 x 360 mm, visible portions: approx. 293 x 207). One print with dampstaining along left side (SEE IMAGE). These are original prints, NOT reproductions! TWO OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL TERRACOTTA PRINTS OF ETRUSCAN VASES FROM WILLIAM HAMILTON'S SECOND COLLECTION. Hamilton actually formed two collections of Greek vases; the first he sold to the British Museum. The present prints depict vases from his second collection, part of which was lost at sea. The surviving portion was sold to Thomas Hope. Our prints belong to the 1801-1803 Florence Société Calcographique edition of the "Peintures des vases antiques / Pitture de vasi antichi" (1801-1803) which is distinguished by the sumptuous TERRACOTTA printed ground onto which the black ink was applied directly (one has handpainted with highlights). Hamilton's second collection was first made known to the public through the greatly inferior UNCOLORED outlines of the vase designs, published in Wilhelm Tischbein's "Collection of Engravings from Ancient Vases [...] discovered in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies [...] now in the possession of Sir William Hamilton" (Naples, 1791-1795). As is well known, Hamilton's first collection was published in the famed "Collection of Etruscan, Greek and Roman Antiquities from the cabinet of the Honble. Wm. Hamilton" (in French: "Antiquités étrusques, grecques, et romaines tirées du cabinet de M. Hamilton" (1766-67) compiled by Pierre Francois Hugues (called d'Hancarville). The Société Calcographique prints are often (mis)attributed to the better-known d'Hancarville series; even Christie's London experts did so in the catalogue of their 13 Jun 2018 sale (lot 41, a collection of nine frame prints); despite this error, the lot nonetheless realized GBP 10,000 (!).

FIRST EDITION, complete 4to. run (later volumes appeared in 12mo. only) Collects the prize competition papers of the Royal Academy of Surgery from the 1730's to the 1750's and features a frontispiece (repeated in each volume) by Francois Boucher, considered the greatest French master of the first half of the 18th century, and probably the most productive and versatile painter of the century. As royal painter, Boucher could probably be called on to grace the prize publication of the recently created Royal Academy of Surgery; nevertheless, a medical work illustrated by an artist of his rank was no less an exception then as now, and should be valued on that basis. 1933. Garden City NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1933. Original light yellow wrappers lettered in green. First Editions, being the American copyright issues -- 75 copies each, issued two weeks apart in March 1933 (to coincide with their periodical appearances in French and in English). This is a series of sketches that together form a personal memoir documenting Kipling's lifelong affection for France, from a childhood trip with his father to the Paris Exhibition of 1878, to beyond the Great War. This title was published four months later in England, bound in blue cloth. Both volumes are in fine condition. Richards A412; Stewart 600.

Description
Paris: Quillau, 1742. FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH. With engraved frontispiece, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, and 2 folding tables. Contemporary mottled calf with gilt lettering and decoration on spine, marbled endpapers, spine chipped at foot, top hinge weak; interior excellent. Contemporary signature on title page, ownership stamp of Doctor Charreau. First edition in French. This fine work on the history of medicine, originally published in 1732, is divided into five sections, starting from the Greeks (heavier on Hippocrates), to the Romans, and to Arab practitioners through the Restoration, and on to the present time (with an emphasis on English medicine, especially Sydenham and Harvey). The last section contains the author's plan for improving the work; perhaps the reason for the blanks bound into the book. Of interest is Clifton's comparison of ancient and modern medical practices, raising issues such as why the ancients used bathing and exercise so much more than the moderns. Among his many topics, Clifton relates the need for observation, and discusses materia medica, methods of cure, and inoculations. In addition, he here states that Hippocrates had anticipated Newton in his idea of the system of gravitation. . Clifton (d. 1736) received degrees from Oxford, Leiden and Cambridge. He was a successful physician who practiced in London, physician to the Prince of Wales, and a Fellow of the College of Physicians and the Royal Society. He wrote on physiology and medical history, including translating Hippocrates into English. He ultimately left London for Jamaica where he lived until his death.
