New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1863. Hardcover. Very Good. Fifth edition, revised and greatly enlarged. 12mo. 250pp. + ads. Charts and tables. Red cloth stamped in blind, and titled and decorated in gilt. Marbled endpapers and page edges. Boards with pervasive scuffing, spine-lettering dull, else a good and sound copy. Famous abolitionist Horace Bumstead's copy with his penciled ownership note: "Horace Bumstead. Mass. Rifle Club. Feb. 17, 1864." An educator and Congregationalist minister, upon his graduation from Yale with a degree in military science, Bumstead was commissioned as a Major for the 43rd Regiment of Colored Troops, a post he held from April 1864 to December 1865. After the War he began his pursuit of equal education for African-Americans, joining the faculty of Atlanta University, and eventually went on to serve as the school's second president.
