Description
London: Roger Norton for Robert Pawlett, 1671. 188 x 111 mm. (7 3/8 x 4 5/8"). 10 p.l., 452 pp. VERY PRETTY RED MOROCCO, RICHLY GILT IN RESTORATION STYLE, the central lozenge composed of four elaborate three-lobed fleurons bordered by two triangles made up of a multitude of densely massed tools, the cornerpieces similarly composed of a mass of scrolling tools, these interspersed with long curving foliate swags, all framed by an ornate floral roll, raised bands, spine densely gilt with floral tools and foliage, all edges gilt. Title page with engraved vignette depicting St. Paul's Cathedral in flames (appropriate for this copy!), signed by W[enceslas]. Hollar and dated 1666, two engraved frontispiece plates, one of King David and the other of Ezekiel. Front pastedown with engraved armorial bookplate of Rev. Horace Waller; front flyleaf with early ink signature of E. Hanford. Wing A-1100A; ESTC R172156. For the binding: Nixon, English Restoration Bookbindings, 62. The three endleaves at front and back darkened, apparently from damp, persistent, though very subtle, signs of rumpling in the text (no doubt also from slight dampness), extremities with some wear (top of spine with shallow chip all the way across), a couple minor black spots on covers, backstrip evenly faded, the volume slightly splayed; a fortunate survivor of a fire, but with minimal damage, the text fresh and clean, and, most important, the binding completely sound (with virtually no wear to the joints), and with its luxuriant gilt still bright. This is an excellent copy of a popular, if pessimistic, piece of 17th century religious thought, offered in a particularly pleasing example of period bookbinding. Our author, well-known clergyman and author Allestree (1619-81), composed "Causes of the Decay of Christian Piety" in response to a Britain he viewed as plunging into sin: he tells us in the preface that "vice [is] daily gaining not only strength, but impudence." First published in 1667, the work became hugely popular, influencing contemporary theological thought with its arguments for a return to a simpler, more devoted piety. This volume seems to have belonged to a notable 19th century English religious figure, as the Horace Waller who owned our copy was probably the Revered Horace Waller (1833-96), missionary and antislavery activist. Perhaps the evangelical Anglican Waller, who was deeply patriotic and concerned about spirituality and morality, found something that resonated in the similar concerns of Allestree two centuries earlier. The once gorgeous and still very attractive binding is an excellent example of Restoration binding. The tulip-studded roll border appears identical or nearly so to one used by Queen's Binder A, illustrated in Nixon's "English Restoration Bookbindings," and the quality and style of the abundant tooling is similar to that workshop and other leading binders of the period. While this volume seems to have undergone a significant trauma, the binding's appeal remains, and, not counting the endleaves, it is internally surprisingly clean and fresh..

Description
1965. Hardcover. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 12" x 8.5". Black cloth over boards. Contains 111 black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring 8" x 10" with typed captions on the verso. Album is near fine with some rubbing and fine linen-backed photographs. An extensive collection of press photographs documenting over a year, between 1964 and 1965, in the career of the then Secretary of the Army under Lyndon Johnson, Stephen Ailes. The photographs are housed in a large heavy-duty album that appears to have been assembled as a keepsake for Ailes. A few of the early images feature handwritten tongue-in-cheek captions. According to the Department of Defense the Secretary of the Army is responsible for "all statutory matters relating to the United States Army: manpower, personnel, reserve affairs, installations, environmental issues, weapons systems and equipment acquisition, communications and financial management." Throughout the album Ailes is seen attending events, such as West Point graduation, meeting with military officials, and awarding medals. Then Senator Robert Kennedy is seen in 11 of the photographs at functions with Ailes. In one section of images Ailes is seen being briefed on "the functions of some of the range instrumentation devices;" another shows Ailes visiting the White Sands Missile Range. One caption reads, "a static display of the Army's missile power is shown by a White Sands Missile Range officer...as part of the 11th National Conference of Civilian Aides to the Secretary of the Army." He is also seen awarding certificates to women at the Pentagon and discussing military tactics with an African-American officer. Stephen Ailes became his civilian military career in World War II with the Office of Price Administration after color blindness stopped his military path. After the war he became a lawyer in the DC area with the firm Steptoe and Johnson eventually taking a leave of absence to aid in a "mission to stabilize the government of Greece." From this he gained formal entry into civilian government positions eventually become Under Secretary of the Army under John F. Kennedy in 1961 and by 1964 was promoted to Secretary. He is often cited as the inventor of the Drill Sergeant Program and according to his obituary, "On his watch, the Army dealt with riots in the Panama Canal Zone, where Mr. Ailes helped negotiate a settlement. Army forces also provided disaster assistance after earthquakes in Skopje, Yugoslavia and Anchorage. U.S. troops were dispatched to protect Americans and end a civil war in the Dominican Republic, and Mr. Ailes helped negotiate an agreement with West Germany for joint development of a new tank." In a commencement speech given in 1964 he mentioned troops that had been deployed in Vietnam, though the comment was largely ignored. A large collection of press photographs documenting a year in the career of a top civilian in the military.

Description
Puebla: Imprenta de Francisco de Leon, 1692. Fair.. viii [of xii],138 [of 143]pp. Small quarto. Lacking title page, supplied in manuscript, as well as the second and final five leaves. Contemporary vellum, manuscript spine title, marcas de fuego on top and bottom edges. Text block unattached. Minor soiling to vellum. Moderate insect damage to initial leaves and some additional worming throughout, affecting top lines of text. Worlds collide in the story of Catarina de San Juan, reportedly abducted from South Asia and sold into slavery by the Portuguese, she eventually found her way to Mexico and the church. Catarina's original name was said to have been Mirra, and she is also known as China Poblana, because of her ethnic origins. The legends that come down to us are derived almost exclusively from hagiographies like the present work, one of three published after her death. Catarina is also credited with creating the China Poblana style of dress, consisting of an embroidered blouse, skirt, slip, shawl, and kerchief, a look adopted by denizens of Puebla was modeled on the South Asian sari or langa voni that Catarina brought to Mexico in the 17th century. The present example lacks the title page (supplied in manuscript facsimile), plus the second and final five leaves, and shows signs of biopredation to the extant leaves, somewhat affecting the top lines of text. A wounded copy, priced accordingly, but quite rare -- OCLC locates only two copies in U.S. libraries, at Harvard and Indiana. We also trace one other copy at auction, which sold at Swann for $11,250 in 2023.
