Description
Venice: Lorenzo Basilio, 1728. SOLE EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in contemporary carta rustica. Untrimmed, with deckled edges preserved throughout. Fine condition with just a few leaves spotted. Extremely rare. OCLC and KVK locate 4 copies outside of Italy, only 1 of which is in North America (Harvard Law Library). The work has been attributed to Bartolommeo Melchiori, who also authored a book on criminal law, "Miscellanea di materie criminali, volgari e latine, composta secondo le leggi civili e venete" (Venezia, 1741). The author's name appears only once in the book, on the final leaf of text as "Bart. Melchi." Problems addressed in Part I include: examination, by the court, of murder victims (with a special section on identifying victims of poisoning); identifying a murderer via cruentation (the common belief that the body of the victim would spontaneously bleed in the presence of the murderer); where to try murder by decapitation when the head is found in one jurisdiction and the body in another; charging and incarcerating those accused of murder; modern versus ancient forms of punishment for the crime of murder; whether a person can claim ecclesiastical immunity from prosecution; punishments for accessories to the crime; whether causing the death of a child in utero, killing a deformed child, or causing the death of a child through exposure, are to be considered murder; whether killing someone willing to die or committing suicide should be considered acts of murder. Part II deals with problems such as: whether one who attempts murder be judged the same as a murderer; if a wounded person dies of wounds that were in fact curable (or if the victim dies because of poor medical care), is the one who inflicted the wound guilty of murder?; Whether killing in self-defense is justified; whether killing one's wife or husband for cheating is justified, etc.

Description
London: Sold by D. Midwinter, M. Cooper, A. Bland. and J. Nicholson, 1777. Fourth Printing. 185 x 110 mm. (7 1/2 x 4 1/4"). 1 p.l., 190 pp. 19th century dark brown sheep, raised bands flanked by gilt rules, maroon morocco label, newer endpapers. ESTC N8132; Sabin 14656. Rear joint cracked alongside top three compartments, front joint somewhat rubbed and slightly snagged at top and bottom, minor marks to covers, but the binding still solid. Front flyleaf and title page with indentations from a paper clip, persistent thumbing, small smudges, and minor marginal stains, occasional corner creases; a well-loved copy, but with nothing approaching a fatal defect. This rarely seen adulatory narrative of the five voyages Columbus made to the new world was apparently geared to a youthful audience that would be excited and inspired by his adventures--and perhaps encouraged to embrace endeavors to expand the British empire. Accordingly, the text reads more like an adventure story than a scholarly account. The unattributed text notes the contributions of other explorers, including John Cabot, who sailed to Newfoundland in 1494, and Amerigo Vespucci, who did not, in the author's opinion, deserve to have continents named for him. Footnotes explain which of the islands Columbus claimed for Spain now belonged to England. The book was first printed around 1750, and ESTC records four additional issues in the 18th century. Few copies have appeared at auction, most no doubt read to death by the boys for whom they were intended..

Description
1969. Hopper, Dennis. Easy Rider (1969) articulated a defining work of American countercultural cinema through its portrayal of motorcycle travel, anti-establishment identity, and generational conflict during the Vietnam War era. Following two bikers traveling from Los Angeles to New Orleans, the film situates its narrative within landscapes of open highways and communal encounters, examining tensions between individual freedom and social constraint. Its commercial success despite a modest budget contributed to a shift in Hollywood production models, demonstrating the viability of independently driven filmmaking and supporting the emergence of the New Hollywood movement. Dennis Hopper's Easy Rider. Culver City: Columbia Pictures, 1969. Archive of 6 original vintage silver gelatin photographic lobby stills. Glossy black-and-white prints measuring approximately 8 x 10 inches. The images depict scenes featuring Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda in their roles as traveling bikers, including campfire sequences, roadside interactions, and compositions centered on their motorcycles within expansive desert and rural environments. The stills emphasize costume elements, posture, and spatial openness associated with 1960s motorcycle culture. Each photograph retains printed lower margins with the film title, production credits, and studio copyright, consistent with theatrical display use; several versos bear "Movie Still Archives" stamps indicating later archival handling or distribution. Produced during a period marked by political unrest and shifting cultural values in the United States, Easy Rider contributed to cinematic representations of counterculture and disillusionment following the decline of earlier postwar optimism. Its influence on subsequent independent filmmaking and narrative style remains central to studies of American film history. Light handling wear with minor surface marks; overall very good condition. A cohesive set of exhibition stills from a film associated with the transformation of late twentieth-century American cinema.

[Kansas City, MO]: [Fred Harvey], 1935. Single sheet [46 cm x 41 cm] / [18" x 16"] Very good. Folds as issued. Promotional item produced by the National Park Service to tout the Grand Canyon and the surrounding environs. One side features 13 captioned photographs of "Places to See in New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado" that include images of the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, La Fonda [Santa Fe] and Bryce Canyon (in Southern Utah). The reverse features a pictorial map [23 cm x 41 cm] of the southwest and rates and descriptions of hotels and camps in the Grand Canyon. In 1876, Fred Harvey, Sr. and Charles Morse, the superintendant of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, made a deal that allowed Harvey to open restaurants along the railroad rent-free. This handshake deal is considered one of the most profitable partnerships in the early American West because at the height of its popularity, the Fred Harvey Company operated 84 Harvey House restaurants and changed the way railways and restaurants served their patrons. Harvey and his sons are considered marketing geniuses, and were at the forefront of the Southwestern tourism boom that began in the late 19th century and continued into the postwar era.

16mo (4 1/4" x 6 1/2"), red cloth, gilt title on top cover and spine, illustrated with maps, 430 pp. Some rubbing and extremity wear to covers, but still bright and tight, some aging and a little browning; otherwise very good. Karl Baedeker (1801-1959) was born in Essen, and attended Heidelberg University. His family was involved in the publishing and bookselling business, and around 1828 he entered the travel guide business. Baedeker created a different kind of travel book that opened up tourism for a new class of travelers, by guiding the tourist to the principal attractions in a country or area. This information was often edited by Baedeker himself, and sons would take over and expand the business after his death. This edition provides considerable information on Northern Germany, and includes many maps and plans. ODB.
