In the 1840 presidential campaign Tyler, a Southern Democrat, ran with a northern Whig on the top of the ticket; he was chosen for political reasons rather than his suitability as a successor. Upon Harrison’s demise, most Whigs regarded Tyler as “His Accidency,” a usurper. Because the Constitution was vague about how to proceed in such circumstances, Tyler’s was a crisis of legitimacy. Yet, often imperious and tactless, he did not hesitate to assert, “I am president.” As president, he adopted a strong policy of rewarding his political friends and ignoring his foes.Here we see him rewarding a newspaper editor who had stuck with him. Autograph Letter Signed as President, Washington, July 14, 1843, to Mr. Shearer. “Mr. Lambert who will hand you this has proven himself to be a true friend for 12 months past. He has been the Editor of a paper in Wisconsin which has openly and ably maintained our course. He is poor and I have agreed to say to you that if he can be provided for I should be grateful.”The Lambert spoken of was Davis Lambert of the Wisconsin Enquirer, who is the only Lambert that shows up in ""Guide to Wisconsin Newspapers”. Description: n.p. [various]: n.p., 1935. Very good plus.. A handsome album compiled by Colonel Robert Theodore Cronau (1896-1996) during his career in the Army Air Corps. Cronau was commissioned with a Class A designation in May of 1917 and quickly earned a reputation as one of the most skilled pilots in the newly established Army Air Service. Internal clippings capture thrilling aerial exploits from his earliest service days. The headline of a 1917 article from Americus, GA about a flying demonstration involving Cronau reads: "Daring Aviators Thrill Throng." A Tampa Morning Tribune piece called his work in the National Air Tournament of 1921, "...one of the most remarkable pieces of work in army air service records." As a First Lieutenant he completed Air Service Photographic School in 1922, joining the 22nd Photo Section, capturing early aerial photographs and developing an aptitude with a camera clearly on display here. Cronau would serve as a Director of Air Corps Flying Training trough the 1930's, stationed at Kelly Field, TX and Langley Field, VA, and as Commanding Officer of the XXVI Fighter Command in the Canal Zone into the 1940s and the war. A stunning, rich document covering the dawn of U.S. military air service into the WWII era, replete with compelling aviation photographs and early Air Service and Air Corps ephemera. Oblong folio album. String-bound alligator pattern embossed leather covers. 42 leaves with 119 black and white photographs and dozens of documents and other scrap elements mounted both recto and verso. Additional supporting materials laid-in. Leather rubbed with some minor starting at hinges. Contents well preserved. Generally very good or better.

First American Edition, which consisted of 2000 copies and was published one day after Dent's London edition. Novelists covered by James include Robert Louis Stevenson, Emile Zola, Gustave Flaubert, Honoré de Balzac and George Sand. This was one of several James titles that was unfortunately bound for Scribner's in this unattractive olive-brown cloth that is very prone to soil and fading. This, however, would be a fine copy were it not for some cracking of the endpapers. The clean, unfaded exterior is due to the presence of the original dust jacket, in very good condition (edge-wear that is minor except for one chip affecting about one-half of "SCRIBNER'S" at the foot of the spine). "Dr. Willard soon discovered that his true passion lied in orthopaedics and thus led the effort to organize the nation's first freestanding Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. He was appointed lecturer in orthopaedic surgery in 1887, clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery in 1889, and professor of orthopaedic surgery in 1903. His contributions were instrumental in the establishment of both the orthopaedic ward in the Agnew wing of University Hospital and the Infirmary for Nervous Disease at Penn. At various points in his career, he served as chairman of the surgical section of the American Medical Association, president of the American Surgical Association, and president of the American Orthopaedic Association. One of his crowning achievements was the establishment of the Widener Memorial School for Crippled Children – an institution dedicated to the education and training of children maimed by disease. In recognition of his work, the University appointed DeForest Willard the first chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery – an office which he held from 1889 to the time of his death in 1910. The selection of memos -- from among two thousand file boxes of Selznick's papers -- was a monumental task, and although it was by necessity a highly selective process, at the end you feel like you've gotten a pretty comprehensive picture of DOS -- "at times pontificating and overly fussy," as the editor allows, but "also brilliant, knowledgeable, tasteful, painstaking, and possessed by what he was doing." The book itself was something of a landmark of cinema scholarship: never before had a book of film history (or biography) been presented as an assemblage of primary documents, and it's not saying too much to state that it raised the bar for future film historians' excavation of such archives. Quite fittingly included in the important bibliography "100 Books on Hollywood & the Movies." This edition contains a new introduction by Roger Ebert, as well as a series introduction by Martin Scorsese. (Thankfully, the original edition's introduction by S.N.
