Description
Scroll (395 x 3955 mm.), seven joined sheets, all finely mounted on strong paper, inner wooden core roller. [Japan]: early Meiji. The Tokara archipelago is a group of 12 small islands (seven are permanently inhabited today) south of Kyūshū. They were originally jointly controlled by the Shimazu clan of Satsuma fiefdom and the Ryukyu kingdom, but in 1611, Ryukyu ceded its territory to Satsuma. The islands played an important role in the north-south maritime routes that ran from south China through Okinawa to Kyūshū. At the time this cartographic scroll was made, there were nine inhabited islands, all depicted here: Nakanoshima 中之島; Akusekijima 悪石島; Takarajima 宝島 and Kodakarajima 小宝島 (on one image); Kuchinoshima 口之島; Tairajima 平島; Suwanosejima 諏訪之瀬島; and Gajajima 掛蛇島 and Kogajajima 小掛蛇島 (on one image). Three further, uninhabited islands are not illustrated here. Each map depicts the geography (including volcanoes, hot springs, wetlands, streams, and ponds), vegetation and crop fields, landing sites, mines, paths, and villages, with place names in red. Distances to neighboring islands are given. A few careful repairs to the sheets, but in fine and fresh condition. Preserved in a wooden box.

Description
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1945 Illustrated by Garth Williams. First edition, first printing. Publisher's tan cloth, with Garth's illustration of Stuart Little tugging on a rope to the front board in white and green, lettered in white and green, pictorial teal endpapers with illustrations by Garth in white; in its original dust jacket, with Garth's illustration of Stuart Little canoeing down a stream to the front panel, lettered in black. Near fine book, with light toning to head of spine, a touch of rubbing to spine ends, some very light spotting to edges of front board, and corners lightly bumped; near fine unclipped dust jacket, with light toning to spine and panel edges, some wear to foot of spine, a very shallow chip and small closed tear to top edge of front panel, partially faded stamp to front flap ("E.B."?), and lightly nicked corners. Overall, a clean and attractive copy. Stuart Little is E. B. White's first children's book. It tells the story of a mouse named Stuart who is born into the Little family of New York City, which is otherwise composed entirely of humans. White, then better known as a founding member of The New Yorker, began writing Stuart Little "in the hope of amusing a six-year-old niece of his," but, as the dust jacket notes, "before he finished it she had grown up and was reading Hemingway." White's background as a columnist exposes itself in the novel's episodic format, which tells a series of Stuart's adventures rather than an overarching plot. As Malcolm Cowley proclaimed in his 1945 New York Times review, "To say that 'Stuart Little' is one of the best children's books published this year is very modest praise for a writer of his talent." . First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included. Illus. by Garth Williams.

Very good.
Description
[N.p., 1927. Very good.. 9pp. Gathered signatures, stapled. Minor rusting to staples, light soiling to margins of outer leaves. A rare pamphlet printing an interesting essay on the nature of race prejudice by one of the foremost African American minds of the early-20th century. Kelly Miller, a noted African American scholar, mathematician, and teacher, was a professor at Howard University and a well-regarded essayist on racial topics. Four of his books were collections of these types of essays, including Race Justice (1908), Out of the House of Bondage (1914), An Appeal to Conscience (1918), and The Everlasting Stain (1924). The present essay does not appear in any of these works, and by necessity must have been printed sometime during or after the latter two works, as it refers in the last paragraph to the number of French women who married "negroes" during the "World War." It is most likely an offprint of an article by Miller entitled, "Race prejudice, innate or acquired?" published in the July-August 1927 issue of Journal of Applied Sociology. Miller's essay argues that race prejudice is not innate, but rather an acquired "one-sided passion...stimulated by adult instruction...clearly modifiable by time, place, and circumstance...exhibited in varying degrees of intensity by the different sections of the white race." Further, Miller discusses "natural antipathy" among the races, especially with regard to "interbreeding." OCLC lists just three copies, at Yale, Emory, and the British Library. Work, p.596 (ref).

Description
Seoul: The Seoul Press, 1920. About very good.. [2],36,[2]pp. Original grey printed wrappers. Moderate wear and soiling with some loss to text on covers. Minor soiling at edges of text block. A pair of articles reprinted by the English-language newspaper The Seoul Press, operating in Japanese-occupied Korea. The first article praises the Japanese efforts to maintain control over and civilize Korea and Shandong in China. The second is an opinion piece against the anti-Japanese sentiment in California -- which also happens to condemn outside critiques of Japan's Korean occupation. An ad for the newspaper on the rear cover notes that this is "The only English Daily Paper Published in Korea," and is "widely read in Korea, Japan and Manchuria." An interesting piece of propaganda printed by the occupied press.
