Description
London: Vizetelly & Co, 1886. First U.K. edition. Near Fine. The rare first UK edition of Tolstoy's masterpiece. Rebound in full blue crushed morocco by the Chelsea bindery. Top edges gilt, dark maroon end papers, front and rear cloth covers bound in at the end. Three octavo volumes, all dated 1886 on the title pages, collating: viii, 9-429; iv, 5-360, [32 p. publisher's catalogue, dated Sept. 1886]; iv, 5-387, [4 p. publisher's catalogue]; complete with all half-titles. A few spots of foxing on the early leaves, otherwise an excellent copy overall. Housed in a matching blue, lined slipcase. The first UK edition is notoriously rare on the market. The author's epic novel of the Napoleonic Wars, which gives them a human face through the poignant impact they have on several interrelated characters. A story of love and tradition amidst a crumbling society and a radically changing world. A novel brimming with enlightenment and modern theories. Virginia Woolf wrote: "There remains the greatest of all novelists-for what else can we call the author of War and Peace? ... Even in a translation we feel that we have been set on a mountain-top and had a telescope put into our hands. Everything is astonishingly clear and absolutely sharp." Undoubtedly a masterpiece of world literature, and in our opinion, the greatest work from the Russian literary canon. Near Fine.

Description
London: T. Cadell & W. Davies, 1801. First English edition. Calf-backed marbled boards; some light marginal spotting, small tear on first two leaves repaired, text unaffected, small stamp (discarded) from the Academy of Natural Sciences on title. Overall in excellent condition. First English edition of this scarce and handsome set of Fourcroy’s chemistry tables. The present work was translated by William Nicholson from the original French (Tableaux Synoptiques de Chimie, 1800), the first set of chemical synoptic tables ever published. The author intended for it to accompany his collected lectures and chief work, Systême des connaissances chimiques (1800), which Ferguson considers “the best account of the state of the science at the time.” While the extensive Systême des connaissances chimiques was written for the advanced scholar, Fourcroy felt the succinct large-format tables would summarize and clearly demonstrate the basic principles and relationships of chemistry for all students. They were originally created as teaching aids to be split up and posted on the wall of a laboratory or classroom, which likely contributed to the current rarity of complete sets. Fourcroy (1755-1809), noted French chemist and professor at the Jardin des Plantes, École Polytechnique, and the École de Médicine, was a dedicated teacher whose celebrated lectures were renowned for their completeness, clarity, and brilliant delivery. He joined with Lavoisier, Guyton de Morveau, and Berthollet in revising chemical nomenclature, which is reflected in this work. Nicholson (1753-1815), an English chemist, was a follower of Fourcroy’s antiphlogistic theory, and translated many of his works into English including Élemens d’Histoire naturelle et de Chimie (1782), Essai sur le Phlogistique (1788), and later Systême des connaissances chimiques (1804).

Description
Dublin: Printed by Brett Smith, for Richard Moncrieffe, No. 16 Capel-Street, 1784. The Third Irish Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 2 volumes in 1 (continuously paginated). xiii, [1], 310p. Contemporary (original?) leather. 18 cm. This copy lack the frontis (a portrait of Sancho). Modest scattered foxing, mostly on first few leaves. Former owner's bookplate dated 1925 inside front cover. Small brown spot with a hole at top of title-leaf and a lesser brown spot at same place on following leaf. The first edition of this book was published in two volumes in London in 1782 but is likely to have also been issued as a 2 vols. in 1. This is an appealing copy of the Third Edition of the Dublin edition. OCLC locates several copies of the 1st and 3rd Dublin editions, both dated 1784. No further Dublin editions or printings appear to have been published. We don't know if there was a Second Dublin edition. We also don't know if there were any textual or other differences between the First and Third Dublin editions. The Library of Congress has Thomas Jefferson's copy of the first Dublin edition. Sancho was born on a slave ship. He was taken with his parents to the Spanish West Indies where his mother quickly succumbed to disease and his father committed suicide. Sancho was brought to England at the age of two. Sancho grew up enslaved. The Duke of Montagu took an interest in Sancho and encouraged Sancho to read. After the Duke's death, Sancho fled his enslavement and became at least temporarily butler to the widowed Duchess of Montagu who left him a small inheritance and an annuity when she died. Sancho spent several years living on his modest inheritance. He later served for several years as a valet for the successor Duke of Montagu and married Ann Osborne with whom he had several children..Sancho and his wife were grocers during his last several years. Sancho, despite being self-educated, was admired as a witty and erudite correspondent whose letters were often preserved by their recipients. An exchange of letters between Sancho and Laurence Sterne was included in "Letters of the late Rev. Mr. Laurence Sterne" published in 1775. The letters in this volume were compiled and edited by Frances Crewe, one of his correspondents. A brief memoir titled "The Life of Ignatius Sancho" is found at pages v-xiii and was written by Joseph Jekyll.

Description
Chicaao: Alex T. Loyd & Co., 1886 First Loyd edition. There also exists a Chicago, Henry A. Sumner & Co. edition (1885), presumably printed from the same plates. OCLC records one copy of the present edition. Publisher's dark blue cloth. Gilt spine, with illustration from the novel below title/author (also in gilt) — all relatively bright. Front cover features a decorative pattern ruled in black, in the center of which is featured the series logo for "Lynch's Detective Novels." Back board, same, but ruled in blind. . Octavo. Frontispiece + 49 illustrations. With publisher's ads. Light shelfwear to head and foot of spine. Tips bent with very minor fraying of cloth. Small, light damp-stain towards foot of back board. Mild fraying/cracking to exterior front hinge — more prominent at hinge interior, but overall still sound. Likewise, very mild cracking to interior of back hinge. Decorative off-white endpapers with light toning. Small tear to top of first front free endpaper. Third front free endpaper features Christmas gift inscription to a previous owner (1887). Text generally clean and bright throughout. Binding tight, with the exception of two early gatherings which protrude slightly. A very good + copy. Emily "Emma" Murdoch Van Deventer (1853 – 1914) was an Illinois-born mystery author who published at least two dozen detective novels under the pseudonym "Lawrence L. Lynch (of the Secret Service)" — Lawrence Lynch being the name of her first husband. Van Deventer's oeuvre is known for exploring Chicago and its surrounding environs, and for frequent appearance of strong, female leads, including the titular girl detective in Madeline Payne, the Detective's Daughter (1884) and the raucous cast of Mountain Mystery.

Description
New York: Holt, Rinehart Winston, 1966. First Edition, stated. Signed and inscribed by the Author. Octavo, gray cloth (hardcover), lavender endpapers, 191 pp. Very Good, with light foxing (age darkened spotting) in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear. From dust jacket: Seven decisive days in the life of a young clergyman are powerfully and dramatically chronicled in Faith Baldwin’s story of an intelligent young man torn between the ministry and medicine. Assistant Pastor in a Protestant church, Ira Stevens doubts his calling to the ministry; as his life unfolds pleasantly enough in a small New England town, he is plagued by the loneliness of indecision and by an increasing sense of isolation -- from his work and from his own desires. He wonders if he should return to the medical training he once found so rewarding. In a week filled with introspection, bewilderment, and intense activity, Ira seeks an answer, his objectivity confused by his deep, troublesome involvement with one woman, and by his affection for another. He must, of course, tend to his parishioners as usual, among them, Mrs. Armstrong, who flaunts a menacing grip on the parish, and Ella Downing, whose lonely existence masks a tragic secret. As Ira touches extremes of joy, misery, tenderness, and even violence in these lives, he also confronts -- and accepts -- surprising elements in his own nature. At the end of seven days, he has made a final decision.

Statesville, NC: American Psychiatrists for Neutrality on Abortion, [1991-92]. Original broadisde, with text and illustrations printed in black on white bond, measuring 8.5" x 11". Horizontal fold smoothed-out at center, else Near Fine. Broadside issued by the American Psychiatrists for Neutrality on Abortion (APNOA), highlighting the conflict within the mental health community (specifically the APA) over the abortion issue. The APNOA "was formed after APA's President Elissa Benedak invited Planned Parenthood's President Faye Wattleton to address the Convocation at APA's 1991 annual meeting in New Orleans. Co-chairs Patricia Wesley of Yale University School of Medicine and Audrey Michal, M.D. found that many psychiatrists did not know of their association's promotion of abortion. Moreover even many pro-abortion psychiatrists opposed the APA's taking sides on this complex moral issue" (Maloof, George E. "Religion at the American Psychiatric Association." The Linacre Quarterly Vol.61, No.2 (May, 1994), p.12).
