Description
London: George Redway, 1897 Introduction by Rev. F. F. Ellinwood. First British edition, first printing. Rebound in early-mid 20th century green cloth, with red label lettered and ruled in gilt to spine. Very good, with heavy toning to spine, a couple of tiny chips to spine label, offsetting to endpapers, British parapsychologist Alan Gauld's bookplate and ownership signature to front endpapers, and some tiny bookworm holes to page margins (text not affected). Overall, a great copy of this hard-to-find occult book. In Demon Possession and Allied Themes, John Nevius details case studies of supernatural phenomena - many witnessed first-hand by Nevius during his time in China as a missionary - and explores a handful of explanatory theories, ranging from pathological, to psychological, to biblical. John Nevius (1829-1893) was an American Presbyterian missionary whose Nevius Method, a "three-self" concept for the development of self-propagating, self-supporting, and self-governing indigenous churches, was instrumental to the rapid growth of Christianity in Korea. Alan Gauld (1932-2024) was a British parapsychologist and psychologist whose career spanned 65 years. He was the President of the Society for Psychical Research from 1989 to 1992, and the author of influential works on the paranormal, like The Founders of Psychical Research (1968), Poltergeists (1979), and A History of Hypnotism (1992). . First British Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.
