Description
Sacramento: State Office J.J. Ayers, Supt. State Printing,, 1885.. Early Rules Governing the Yosemite Valley, Before It Was a National Park "This is the earliest comprehensive compilation of regulations for the [Yosemite] grant. Also printed are the by-laws of the commissioners, the governor's proclamation appointing the first commissioners, the legislation establishing and accepting the grant, and a list of former and current commissioners" - Currey & Kruska. The rules and regulations mention a "guardian" of the grant, who supervises all daily activities in both the Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Big Tree Grove, is authorized to arrest visitors who violate the ban on camp-fires, and reports to the commission any commercial enterprises not sanctioned by the commission. The list of former commissioners includes luminaries such as Frederick Law Olmsted, J. D. Whitney, and Galen Clark (the first "guardian" of Yosemite). Uncommon in the market, with only this copy appearing at auction. OCLC locates copies at Stanford, the Huntington Library, the National Agricultural Library, the New York Public Library, and Yale; and Currey & Kruska add copies at the California Historical Society, the Bancroft Library, and the Yosemite Museum. 12mo. Original printed wrappers, stapled. Ex-Pioneer Society of San Diego County, with their ink stamp on front wrapper and titlepage. A bit of light wear. Near fine. CURREY & KRUSKA 40. ROCQ 5167. OCLC 228682625, 28167340.
