Very Good binding
Description
Williamsburg, Virginia: The Students of The College of William and Mary, 1927. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. This William and Mary yearbook was the property of a Dudley Payne Terry, of the Sigma Nu fraternity, with his name on the front endpaper and an typed letter signed by the College President, Dr. Julian Alvin Carroll Chandler, pasted onto the front pastedown. The letter suspends all of the fraternity’s social privileges for a month, “with reference to the entertainment of young ladies in the fraternity house, and in view of the fact that a general, unwritten rule was ignored.” The tone of the letter suggests that the punishment fit the crime, and quite possibly a lady was discovered at the fraternity the morning after a certain social gathering. Pasted onto a front flyleaf is an advertisement to vote for “The Wythe Ticket”. At the rear two programs for dances and one for a fraternity banquet are pasted in, as well as four printed invitations to Fraternity dances and afternoon tea, two handwritten invitations to fraternity dances, one filled in form for a meeting of the Monogram Club, and two newspaper clippings concerning a cross dressing musical performed by the Monogram Club and the fraternity fashion fad of Heidelburg flat hats. Laid in are a program for the football banquet of ‘26, two clippings with photos of an academic procession, and the first two leaves of the first issue of the Sigma Nu “News” letter to alumni. The newsletter describes Mr. Payne’s roles in the fraternity, as well as his membership in the Monogram Club and the college’s “Flat Hat” Club. Bound in dark green cloth, with lettering and decoration stamped in gilt and blind. Wear to the extremities of the spine. Very Good binding.
