Description
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1841. FIRST EDITION. With folding map, frontispiece in each volume, and 65 full-page engravings. Publisher’s cloth with gilt illustration on each cover, both volumes rebacked; minor foxing throughout, though some leaves with more spotting, most tissue guards present. First edition. Stephens was a pivotal figure in the rediscovery of the Mayan civilization. He here describes in detail the remarkable aspects of Mayan life, including the architecture, idols, tablets and other creations of the ancient civilization. Stephens was accompanied on his journey through Guatemala, Costa Rica and the Yucatan by the illustrator Frederick Catherwood. Stephens (1805-1852) was an American explorer, writer and diplomat. This marks the third of his “Incidents of travel” series, preceded by his first work Incidents of travel in Egypt, Arabia, Petraea and the Holy Land (1837) and Incidents of travel in Greece, Turkey, Russia and Poland (1832). This work is followed by his two-volume Incidents of travel in Yucatan (1843), like this book a classic of Meso-American and nineteenth-century travel literature.

Description
London: Longmans, Green, & Co., 1881. FIRST EDITION. With 2 full-page plates (the first being the frontispiece and in color), 116 text illustrations and 6 tables. Original publisher’s cloth; tear along upper portion of spine, otherwise an excellent copy overall. First edition of this guide to the diseases that can affect cattle, perfect for vets and cattle owners alike. The author introduces his subject with a general discussion on disease, treatment, therapeutics and materia medica, and follows it with more specific and focused chapters on diseases of the blood, of the circulatory system, of the digestive system, of the respiratory apparatus, of the urine and urinay apparatus, neurology, skeletal system and generative organs. Of particular interest is his discussion on wounds and other surgical conditions, and the book provides an index with a list of surgical operations and diagnostic means. Steel (1855-1891) was an accomplished veterinary surgeon who authored a number of books aimed at educating vets, among them on the treatment of medical issues affecting camels, elephants, horses and dogs, in addition to oxen. After graduating from Royal Veterinary College in 1875, he worked at London College as an anatomy demonstrator until he went to serve in India in 1882. Apart from producing treatises, Steel founded The Quarterly Journal of Veterinary Science in India and Army Animal Management. In Steel’s view, this journal was of crucial importance to the establishment of veterinary science in the Raj. Over the years, army veterinarians had gathered invaluable information on the diseases and treatment of animals, but as long as their knowledge remained concealed within private journals and notebooks, it was worthless to the profession as a whole.

Description
1861. Handbill. Very Good. A scarce example of a piece of Confederate electoral ephemera from 1861. A fragile, original handbill announcing the November 6th upcoming Presidential election of the Confederacy, with Jefferson Davis running for President and his running mate Alexander Stephens running for Vice-President. Also includes information on the "Electoral Ticket. For the State at Large (Virginia)" and "for the Districts" (the 1st District through the 16th, with all of the candidates' names and their hometowns printed alongside their districts) and "for Congress" within the Confederacy (candidate Roger A. Pryor"). The handbill is firmly printed on thin, light-blue paper and there can be little doubt that almost none of these has survived the 160+ years until this moment. The original handbill measures 4" wide x 6" tall and is bright and relatively well-preserved, in spite of having taken on a bit of soiling to the front and showing one small closed tear along the top-edge. At the rear of the handbill is a crossed-out pen signature and below this the same signature ("Madison Gill") completed. An impressive piece of 19th century political Americana and a look into the shadowy world of Confederate history.

1945. ABERCROMBIE, Patrick. Greater London Plan 1944. A Report prepared on behalf of the Standing Committee on London Regional Planning at the Request of the Minister of Town and Country Planning. X, 220, [1] pp. Illustrated with 89 photographs & 33 illustrations from drawings, diagrams, & maps (some in colour, 9 folding) plus a large folding master plan in 2 sheets inserted in envelope at rear. Folio, bound in publisher's cloth and dustwrapper. London: His Majesty's Stationery Office, 1945. "Following World War II, London was presented with an opportunity to amend the perceived failings of unplanned and haphazard development that had occurred as a result of rapid industrialization in the nineteenth century. During the Second World War, the blitz had destroyed large urban areas throughout the entire county of London, but particularly the central core. Over 50,000 inner London homes were completely destroyed, while more than 2 million dwellings experienced some form of bomb damage. This presented the London City Council with a unique chance to plan and rebuild vacant tracts of the city on a scale not seen since the Great Fire of London. Although the report was comprehensive in attempting to solve the issues facing London at the time, its implementation was not fully realized. The economic climate in Britain during the post war era simply did not allow for major infrastructure development on the scale that Abercrombie had suggested." Dust jacket worn, else fine.
