Description
San Francisco: The Arion Press, 1992. Limited Edition. Hardcover. New. Kitaj, R.B.. Quarto, 12 3/8" by 10", 64 pages. The type for the poetry and the introduction is Imprint, in Monotype composition by Mackenzie & Harris. The display type is Weiss Titling No. 3, handset. The lithographs were printed by Curwen Chilford in Cambridge, England. The paper is T.H. Saunders cream laid, an English mould-made sheet. The binding, done in-house, is hand-sewn, in two colors of Japanese cloth, a black with tan fibers and a gray-green, titled on the front cover and fore-edge. A triangular flap (reflecting the shape of the initial K in the title) encloses the fore-edge and folds into the front cover. Edition of 200 numbered copies, plus 26 lettered copies hors de commerce, signed by the poet and artist. Following the Grabhorn-Hoyem edition of Allen Ginsberg's "Howl" in 1971, Hoyem proposed to Ginsberg (1926-1997) that his second major poem, "Kaddish", about his mother, Naomi, be published in a limited, signed edition by Arion Press. He agreed, and as for the "Howl" edition, offered additonal material. For "Howl", he had included "The Names", a poetic fragment that identified and provided more information about people mentioned in the longer poem. For "Kaddish", he offered two additional poems, "White Shroud" and "Black Shroud", which were extensions of themes in "Kaddish". The artist R.B. Kitaj (1932-2007) made a lithograph, a double portrait of Ginsberg and his mother facing each other as if at about the same age, with Naomi seeming to be speaking to her son and saying: "Get married, Allen, don't take drugs." ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
Graz: Akademische Druck- und Verlagsanstalt, 1976. 165 x 95 mm. (6 1/2 x 3 3/4"). 255 leaves (in the facsimile volume). Two volumes (including commentary volume in German).Publisher's full dark green velvet, housed in original brown folding cloth box. With numerous decorative initials and line fillers in colors and gold, and with 76 attractive miniatures in gold gothic frames. In mint condition. This is a very pleasing facsimile of the prayer book given to Charles V, the future king of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor, by his aunt and godmother, Margaret of Austria, in approximately 1516. The text is in a careful Burgundian bâtarde done by a scribe of considerable skill, and the degree of artistry in the miniatures, which are in the Flemish style, is high, the figures being rendered realistically and sympathetically. Several miniatures are especially noteworthy in their subject and/or composition. Two examples: the resurrected Christ appears to his mother in a scene that beautifully echoes the composition of the Annunciation, and in the Flight into Egypt, the Holy Family pauses to rest on their journey, the Virgin in the foreground nursing her child and looking radiant, while Joseph replenishes a water jug and the donkey grazes nearby. Margaret of Austria was the owner of an impressive library which included a number of fine illuminated manuscripts, and she would have commissioned the finest artists to execute her nephew's coming-of-age gift.

John Sturm's big league baseball career lasted only one season, with the World Series-winning New York Yankees. He entered the Yankees starting lineup May 15, the same day Joe DiMaggio began his 56 game hitting streak, and his steady play at 1st and as lead-off batter helped to steady a struggling Yankees team. Later that year he became the first married player to enter military service for WWII. Due to an injury suffered during his service and later injuries playing ball, he never made back into another big league game. Roy Weatherly played 10 seasons in the bigs, with Cleveland, the Yankees, and the New York Giants. Traded to the Yankees after the 1942 season, he appeared in one at bat in the 1943 World Series. He missed two seasons, 1944-45, while serving in WWII. "I don't have to tell you that every ballplayer's prayers are directed toward New York and a job with the Yankees." - Roy Weatherly (1943) in Baseball's Greatest Quotes (1982)..

This was right at the time she had just won an Academy Award as Best Actress for FUNNY GIRL, had HELLO, DOLLY! in release and was making ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER.
