Description
"UN SUCCÈS IMMENSE" (GRATET-DUPLESSIS) Two parts in one volume, 8vo (153x100 mm). [8], ccxlvii, [1 blank]; [4], cxcii leaves. Collation: *8 a-z8 A-H8; †4 aa-zz8 Aa8. Leaf H8 is a blank. Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards dated 1558 and signed with the initials "A.K." (repeated in manuscript at the bottom of the title page), two clasps preserved (slightly soiled, spine rubbed). Stamp of "Menno P.W. de Limburg" on the front pastedown and flyleaf. A superb copy with some contemporary annotations and underlining in brown ink. Second edition (the first was printed in Frankfurt by C. Egenolff in 1541) of this fundamental and incredibly successful collection of seven thousand proverbs, recast in Swiss German by the printer, newly arranged by subject by Konrad Pellikan (1478-1556) and provided with an index for each part. Some of the German proverbs are accompanied by Latin equivalents. This second edition is the only one, along with the first, to include Franck's name in the title; all subsequent editions omit him. Gratet-Duplessis, Bibliographie parémiologique, Paris, 1847, pp. 326 and 328). The proverbs are taken from folklore, contemporary speech, classical languages and the dialects of north-western Europe. Fables and stories of common folk and powerful people complete the entries. Generations of writers have plundered the collection for ideas and phrases. In the Proverbs Franck conveys practical rules of life and wisdom for the common reader. At the same time, he places his theological program in a traditional cultural context by translating Jewish, ancient and national language collections of proverbs into German. "Sebastian Franck (Eleutherius) was born at Donauwörth, in Swabia, studied in Ingolstadt and Heidelberg, and took holy orders in the diocese of Augsburg. In 1527 he served as a Lutheran pastor near Nürnberg, but one year later he joined the Anabaptist community in the imperial city. This association did not last long either, and in 1529 Franck moved to Strasbourg, where he tried to settle down as a writer and private scholar. He maintained personal contacts with such radical religious thinkers as Kaspar Schwenckfeld, Hans Denck, Johannes Bünderlin, Johannes Cam-panus, and perhaps also with Michael Servetus, who came to Strasbourg in 1531 to debate with Capito and Bucer. Denck and Bünderlin seem to have exerted a decisive influence upon Franck, who became more and more critical of all ecclesiastical institutions and adopted a fully spiritualist position. After having been expelled from Strasbourg in 1531 he spent some time at Esslingen, where he tried to make a living as a soap-boiler. In 1532 he moved to Ulm, where he set up a printing shop. His writings provoked the wrath of the Lutheran preachers, and on the initiative of Martin Frecht he was eventually banished again in 1539. After further wanderings he settled in Basel in 1541. He acquired citizenship and again started his printing business, but after little more than a year he died. Franck's literary activity began in 1527-8 with a German translation of Andreas Althamer's Diallage against Hans Denck (Nürnberg 1528) and with the tract Von dem grewlichen Laster der Trunckenheit (Augsburg 1528). The Paradoxa (Ulm: J. Varnier 1534), the Guldin Arch (Augsburg: H. Steiner 1538), and the Verbütschiert ... Buch (1539) are the main reflections of his spiritualism. His historical thought can be studied in the Türkenchronik (Nürnberg 1529) and in the Germaniae Chronicon (Frankfurt: C. Egenolff 1538) but above all in the Chronica, Zeytbuch und Geschichtbybell (Strasbourg: B. Beck 1531; Ulm]. Varnier 1536). Among his other writings are the cosmographic Weltbuch (1533), a Latin paraphrase of the Theologia Deutsch, and the Kriegsbüchlein des Frides (Augsburg: H. Steiner 1539), which became important as a landmark in the history of pacifist thought. A number of Franck's minor writings were published in Dutch editions only. Sebastian Franck was one of the great religious individualists of his age; he was a lonely and isolated advocate of peace and an imperturbable critic of religious persecution, because he believed that God alone recognizes the true heretics. After many disappointing experiences with the Roman church, Lutheranism, and Anabaptism he dissociated himself from all religious parties; he had no followers and did not found his own religious movement. His life was a vagrant journey from one city to another because his attempts to settle down were thwarted almost everywhere. Franck respected Erasmus very highly and often quoted from the humanist's writings. His skepticism of dogmatic formalism and his pacifist ideas clearly show marks of Erasmus' influence. In 1534 Franck wrote a German translation of the Moria. Erasmus, on the other hand, did not show much appreciation for Franck's work. Franck's expulsion from Strasbourg in 1531 was in fact due to a complaint which Erasmus had submitted to the city government because the author of the Geschichtoybell had listed him among the great and unjustly persecuted heretics of Christendom" (H.R. Guggisberg, Sebastian Franck, in: "Contemporaries of Erasmus", Toronto-Buffalo-London, 1986, II, pp. 53-54). K. Kaczerowsky, Sebastian Franck Bibliographie, Wiesbaden, 1976, A-161; M. Vischer, Bibliographie der zürcher Druckschriften, Baden-Baden, 1991, C-1146; Gratet-Duplessis, Op. cit., no. 542, pp. 327-328; VD 16, F-2123.

Description
Baxter Springs (Kansas): M. H. Gardner, Printer, 1888. Broadside printed on cloth, 43 x 33 cm., employing several sizes and styles of bold type. Baxter Springs had been a major cattle drive town, but began to decline after the railroads were built. OCLC locates fewer than 25 items printed in Baxter Springs between the 1860s and 1900, mostly newspapers and journals, with only a couple of individual books or pamphlets, and no listings at all for this printer. The sale seems reflective of the cow culture of the town. Very good.

Description
Washington, D.C.: Buell & Blanchard, 1858. Good.. Twelve issues, each 4pp., printed in seven columns. Large folio. Old folds, varying levels of chipping, fold separations, foxing, and edge wear. Occasional minor loss of text from wear at crossfolds and in one case a tobacco burn. Some issues with ink notations at top left or in the top margin. A dozen issues, published over the course of a decade in the mid-19th century, of the abolitionist newspaper The National Era, edited by Gamaliel Bailey and John Greenleaf Whittier. The National Era was an important source of news and debate over the issue of slavery during its thirteen-year run, and continuously argued for the abolition of the peculiar institution until it ceased operations in February 1860. The most lasting legacy of the newspaper is its serialization of Uncle Tom’s Cabin in forty-one weekly installments between June 1851 and April 1852, the first appearance of the novel anywhere. The present collection of issues includes number 81, 97, 144, 167, 329, 342, 371, 383, 384, 400, 556, and 589. The issues provide a cross-section of the concerns of the newspaper during the volatile years governed by the Fugitive Slave Law and just before the Civil War, and include speeches by John Dix, John Calhoun, Daniel Webster, Stephen Douglas, William Goodell, Thomas Hart Benton, Gerrit Smith, Eli Thayer, and numerous others. The passages concern a wide range of subjects important to abolitionists, such as "Free Soil in the West," "The Slavery Question," "The Legal Tenure of Slavery," "The Fugitive Slave Act - Proposition for Its Repeal," "Rights of Free Negroes in Maine. Can They Vote?," "Slavery in Oregon," "Kansas - Slavery - The Lecompton Constitution," and more. There are also stories about the splitting of the Presbyterian Church in Alexander, Pennsylvania over the issue of slavery; a very long transcript of Congressional debate and other articles on "The Nebraska Bill," i.e., the Kansas-Nebraska Act which repealed the Missouri Compromise; numerous book excerpts and book reviews; news and machinations of the larger abolitionist movement; and so forth. One 1853 issue prints a story about a fugitive slave recovered in Kentucky named Tom Steel, noting he is "not the veritable 'Uncle Tom' of Mrs. Stowe notoriety." This illustrates the immediate popular thrust and wide dissemination of Stowe's great novel. The prospectus for the newspaper, printed in 1847, stated its intentions: "While due attention will be paid to Current Events, Congressional Proceedings, General Politics and Literature, the great aim of the paper will be a complete discussion of the Question of Slavery, and an exhibition of the Duties of the Citizen in relation to it; especially will it explain and advocate the leading Principles and Measures of the Liberty Party, seeking to do this, not in the spirit of the Party, but in the love of Truth - not for the triumph of Party, but for the establishment of Truth.” Issues of The National Era are rare in the market, especially in even small groups such as this one.

Description
Doniphan, Ks: Printed at the Crusader of Freedom Office, 1858. Very good.. Single sheet, 3.5 x 7.5 inches. Minor foxing, light edge wear. An uncommon form, printed at James Redpath's Crusader of Freedom office in Doniphan, Kansas. The Scottish-born Redpath originally worked for Horace Greeley's New York Tribune where he published a series of articles compiling Facts of Slavery. In 1855, he moved to the Kansas-Missouri border and reported on the slavery disputes for the Free Soil newspaper, the Missouri Democrat, before starting his own newspaper, the Crusader of Freedom. The motto of his newspaper was "I enroll myself a Crusader of Freedom until slavery ceases to exist." Redpath met John Brown immediately after the fateful Pottawatomie Creek incident and his interview with the fervent abolitionist was Brown's debut in the press with Redpath labeling him a warrior-saint. The journalist became Brown's most vocal supporter in the press, and his report of the Battle of Osawatomie helped take Brown to national prominence. He became friends with John Brown and one of the fierce abolitionist's largest supporters, writing in Brown's defense after his raid on Harper's Ferry. After Brown's execution, Redpath published a book on Brown, the proceeds from which went to the Brown family. Redpath was also famous for co-authoring a seminal guidebook entitled Hand-Book to Kansas Territory and the Rocky Mountains' Gold Region. He left Kansas shortly after the present work was printed, moving to Boston, where he eventually turned his attentions to encouraging emigration of African Americans to Haiti. Ostensibly, the present form was created so that local resident W.H. Bayliss could pay his Doniphan County taxes on July 20, 1857. However, it stands as a symbol of the abolitionist spirit in Kansas, which was deeply felt by people such as Redpath and Brown. The form is decorated with an engraving of the personification of Liberty, with the eagle and shield inside an elaborated framing device. We could locate no other copies of this form in OCLC.

Description
1st Edition. A complete set of artist-publisher Jake Tilson's multimedia travel and art serial, with texts in English, French and German, profusely illustrated throughout with tipped in plates and bound in extras. 4to. Very good. Illus. stiff wraps, extremities rubbed. [438] As featured in Eye Magazine, Winter 1990: "In 1985, Tilson's Woolley Dale Press published the first edition of Atlas, an occasional magazine whose title neatly encapsulates his obsession with mapping, or re-mapping, the world. Atlas has become progressively more assured with each issue. Lacking formal training in graphic design and reprographic method, Tilson has taught himself by trial and error as he goes along. He keeps marked-up samples of typesetting and annotates proof copies with tint specifications so he knows which effects to avoid or repeat. The process of research, commissioning (contributors range from the painter Antoni Tàpies to cartoonist Steven Appleby), writing, design and production is a one-man labour of love. Atlas 3 evolved 'organically' from Tilson's first sketchbook ideas to eventual publication, two years later in 1988, in a trilingual, offset litho-printed edition of 2,500 with assorted hand-applied extras."

Description
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1964. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. A Fine copy Near Fine dust jacket. Jacket with very slight wear at the extremities, retaining the original price of $5.50. This collection of Raymond Chandler short stories from the 30s and early 40s, many from the famed Black Mask magazine, was released after his death. In fact, Chandler did not want the collection published during his lifetime because he had re-used many elements of these stories in his longer novels. In addition to the titular story, the collection includes tales such as The Man Who Liked Dogs, parts of which were featured in Farewell, My Lovely, and The Curtain, which was re-purposed in The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye. "Raymond Chandler's pulp novelettes [stand high above the rest of the season], to some extent cannibalized in his novels but still important in their own right" (Contemporary New York Times review). Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

Beefcake photography took hold in the 1950s, characterized by a rise in published homoerotic photographs of nude male models and bodybuilders. One of the three photographs was printed blank on the edges, but the entire model can be seen. There is also some curling to the edges of all three photographs, but otherwise they are in very good condition. .

Van Dyke, Button Woods, White Mts., New Hampshire. Your letter of the 20th gives me much pleasure. Thank you heartily for it.
