Description
Covelo, California: Yolla Bolly Press, 1992. ONE OF 35 COPIES BOUND IN VELLUM, 30 of these for sale, OURS ONE OF FIVE RESERVED for the Press (from a total edition of 130 copies, 100 of which were for sale). 373 x 262 mm. (14 3/4 x 10 1/4"). 2 p.l., 101, [3] pp.With commentary by John Fowles. Bound at the press in full vellum by Renee Menge, simple gilt cross on upper cover, white leather stitches along joints. Housed in a bay laurel and cedar wood box with a plain cross carved into the lid. WITH NINE WOODCUTS BY LEONARD BASKIN. SIGNED in the colophon by Leonard Baskin and John Fowles. Anthony Burgess, "Flame into Being," pp. 174-78. As new. Expressively illustrated by Leonard Baskin, this is one of five Press Copies of an elegant fine press edition of D. H. Lawrence's provocative novella of the Resurrection. David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) composed "The Man Who Died" (originally titled "The Escaped Cock") in two sections in 1927-28 as he descended into his final illness. In the novel, a resurrected Jesus embraces humanity and the flesh, turning away from his previous teachings to believe that the body is more important than the spirit. DNB tells us that the book is "a work of intense nostalgia for the body," written by the slowly withering Lawrence. That this openly sacrilegious book did not spark more controversy is surprising; Lawrence biographer Burgess suggests it is due to his care never to explicitly name Jesus in the text, or perhaps because "the whole work is so masterly a piece of prose poetry that it has the capacity to disarm even the faithful." Our edition, with its elegantly simple binding and box, both decorated only with a cross, has not shied away from the connection. From 1983-2001, our publishers, Carolyn and James Robertson, created hand-printed works on the finest handmade paper at their press in Covelo, California, adjacent to the Yolla Bolly Wilderness, from which their press obviously takes its name. As noted in the introduction to "Making Books in the Woods," Stanford University Library's 2002 exhibition of the press' works, "the design of each Yolla Bolly Press book is intimately tied to the nuances of the text, and is completed with great attention to craft. . . . The Press commissions original artwork as well as fresh commentaries by contemporary authors to accompany classic texts, offering an 'interpretation of the original text in a contemporary context.'" The text here is accompanied by commentary from writer John Fowles (1926-2005) and a suite of evocative woodcuts by Leonard Baskin. One of the preeminent American artists of the 20th century, Baskin (1922-2000) considered himself primarily a sculptor, but he is best known for his woodcuts, book illustrations, and the fine books created at the Gehenna Press, which he founded in 1942, while still a student at Yale. His woodcuts and sculptures were in the figurative tradition at a time when abstract expressionism was the dominant movement in art; his defense of his style, quoted in his New York Times obituary, seems especially applicable to the etchings here: "Our human frame, our gutted mansion, our enveloping sack of beef and ash is yet a glory. Glorious in defining our universal sodality and in defining our utter uniqueness. The human figure is the image of all men and of one man. It contains all and can express all." Rugged and emotional, these depictions, like the text, depict a raw and human Jesus, using closely cropped compositions and dark, uneven lines to draw out the visceral celebration of humanity in Lawrence's work..

Description
Birmingham: Printed by John Baskerville for J. and R. Tonson, in the Strand, London, 1761. 230 x 125 mm. (9 1/8 x 5 1/2"). Three volumes.. EXTREMELY PRETTY DARK GREEN MOTTLED CALF BY MORRELL (signed on verso of front endpaper), covers bordered with French fillets with rosette cornerpieces, flat spines ornately gilt in compartments with diapered panel at head and foot flanked by wide bands of closely spaced oblique lines, two compartments with ring cornerpieces and Neoclassical urn centerpieces, crimson and tan morocco labels, turn-ins gilt with dense floral roll, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With six engraved plates, including the frontispiece portrait of Congreve by Chambers after the painting by Kneller, and illustrations for each of the five plays. All volumes with the red morocco book label of William Burden to the front pastedown. Gaskell 16; Straus & Dent 46; Lowndes I, 510; Brunet II, 224; Graesse II, 250; ESTC T26067. ◆The slightest wear to lower corners, trivial imperfections only in the text: a very attractive set in just about perfect condition. In the preface to his 1758 edition of Milton, Baskerville spells out the aims that are to guide his--and after him, many another--special press: "It is not my desire to print many books," he says, "but such only, as are books of consequence, of intrinsic merit, or established reputation, and which the public may be pleased to see in an elegant dress, and to purchase at such a price, as will repay the extraordinary care and expense that must necessarily be bestowed upon them." One can easily see these remarks reflected in the present printing of the collected works of the Restoration dramatist and poet Congreve (1670-1729), the acknowledged master of the artificial comedy of manners. The highlight of the present collection is the group of such comedies, in which wit and fashion play a larger role in one's destiny than probity and moral fortitude. The most famous of his confections in this genre is "The Way of the World." Additional works included here are three other comedies ("The Old Batchelor," "The Double Dealer," and "Love for Love"), a masque ("The Judgment of Paris"), and an operatic libretto ("Semele"). And, for a major contrast, there is Congreve's most unusual and only somber play, "The Mourning Bride," a melodramatic tragicomedy that hands out happiness for the virtuous and punishment for the wicked, in just the manner called for by his contemporaneous critics Jeremy Collier and John Dennis. Included at the end of the third volume is a section of 273 pages containing the author's "Poems upon Several Occasions," and the set concludes with Congreve's even-handed and thoughtful work of criticism entitled "A Letter to Mr. Dennis, Concerning Humor in Comedy." The Baskerville Congreve is not a rare book, but a handsomely bound copy in particularly fine condition like the present one is uncommonly desirable. Our copy was from the library of William Armistead Moale Burden II (1906-84), a prominent banker, art collector, bibliophile, and philanthropist. He was Eisenhower's ambassador to Belgium from 1959 to 1961..

POTTER, Beatrix. Pleasant Trips by Trains & Ships to Little Folks' Country. A book of Pictures and stories for Children. London [&] New York: Ernest Nister [&] E.P. Dutton, [1896]. In addition, on page 60, there is one color illustration by Beatrix Potter. Publisher's color pictorial boards rebacked to style. Original decorated green endpapers, front free endpaper with neat early ink inscription dated 1907. Front free-endpaper neatly strengthened at fore-edge, small piece chipped away from lower corner. A couple of other pages neatly repaired in blank margins not affecting text or illustrations. Corners and extremities of binding a little rubbed - but still an excellent example of this exceptionally rare Louis Wain/Beatrix Potter compilation. A wonderful and unrecorded example of Louis Wain's art including a super double-page color illustration "The Cats' Circus" and seven other illustrations by him including three in color. The Beatrix Potter color illustration on [p. 60] was until recently unrecorded. "A Classic Nister compilation, particularly significant however for until recently unrecorded illustrations by Beatrix Potter, depicting a rabbit stepping out into a wintery scene with an umbrella at the ready. The oval design is a companion to the watercolour sold at Bonhams in 1997. The rabbit is in identical jacket with the same basket on his arm. Here he is putting up his umbrella, while in the drawing he is leaving with the umbrella raised, watched by his wife." (Bloomsbury Auction. Beatrix Potter collection of John R. Cawood. [Georgia], 1901. Printed broadsheet on pale blue paper, completed in manuscript and docketed on verso. Very Good. Zachary Taylor Binion 1846-1924] enlisted as a private with Companies D & H, 5th Regiment Georgia Reserves, in April 1864. He was a farmer in Hancock County, Georgia, for many years and later moved to Bibb County, where he worked as a carpenter. Charles Moses Wiley [1841-1927], a lifelong Georgia resident, was a colonel in the Confederate Army and served under Generals Lee and Jackson. After the war, he was a farmer and Macon's police chief before filling the position of Ordinary of Bibb County for 38 years. [Obituary in The Atlanta Constitution, Feb. 26, 1927, page 4.] Abner Flewellen Jones [1838-1926] enlisted as a private in Co. J, 2nd Regiment Georgia Cavalry, "Capt. Crews' Co., Lawton's Reg't" in May, 1862; he later served with Co. A, 2nd Regiment until about October, 1864. He worked as a merchant and grocer for many years in Georgia but was in North Carolina at the time of his death. William Ashe Poe [1851-1919] served with Co. P, Capt. Logan's Co., Cavalry, "White Country Old Men's Home Guards." The Confederate Cross of Honor was originally known as the Southern Cross of Honor. "The Southern Cross of Honor award, which later became known as the Cross of Military Service, originated on October 13, 1862, as an act of the Confederate Congress to recognize the courage, valor and good conduct of officers, non-commissioned officers and privates of the Confederate Army. Due to wartime shortages, however, the medals were unable to be made. The recipients' names were then recorded in an Honor Roll for future reference." The cross was later designed and issued by the United Daughters of the Confederacy beginning in July, 1898.
