Description
[Kanawha County, WV, 1915. [52] leaves, with fifty-eight full-page professionally-produced sepia-toned photographs, each with printed marginal captions, and six informational plates, most backed on linen. Oblong octavo, 5 x 8 inches. Contemporary brown cloth. Front cover lacking, spine and rear cover chipped and worn. Internally clean. Good condition. A fascinating annotated photograph album produced by the Lackawanna Coal and Lumber Company, a prominent early-20th-century mining and lumber company, highlighting its officers and the variety of its operations in West Virginia. The album begins with portraits of four of the company's mustachioed owners -- W.L. Connell, J.K. Griffith, Thomas J. Foster, and William Griffith. The preponderance of the album focuses on the company's activities in various locations, showing their Power House, Coal Yard, company store, and more at Mucklow; large barge shipments on the Kanawha River; exterior scenes and shots inside the mine at Upper Town; the Power House and Tipple at Greenbrier; various scenes at Paint Creek, including the Power House, Tipple, interior mine scenes (including "Miners Working in Paint Creek Mine Using Electrically Driven Undercutter"), their mule barn, and Hickory Camp Power House; scenes around their Nuckolls, Greencastle, and Grosstown properties; scenes inside their Foster Mine; and much more. Other photographs picture the various trees the company turns into lumber, some scenes around the company's Crescent Property lumber yard, and a couple of their new sawmill. The album concludes with a half dozen informational plates (akin to modern-day Power Point slides) providing financial information on coal land values, coal consumption, coal production, and details on anthracite and bituminous productivity. The album presents like a type of promotional brochure, couching the Lackawanna Coal and Lumber Company as a vital and dynamic enterprise with numerous opportunities for potential investors. We could locate nothing like it in OCLC; the Hagley Museum holds a 1914 album of fifty photographs comprising an inspection trip to the Lackawanna Coal and Lumber Company and Highland Lumber Company, which would be an excellent companion piece to the present album.

Description
1876. Taylor, Alfred Swaine (1806-80); Neil Arnott (1788-1874). Elements of physics, or, natural philosophy. Manuscript consisting of text pages, from an earlier edition, of the book's "Prefatory Note" and Part IV (Heat), sections 554 - approx. 643 and 699 - approx. 716, heavily amended in Taylor's hand, together with extensive autograph additions on separate sheets. Approx. 120ff. N.p., 1876. Accompanied by a cost sheet in a secretarial hand dated 3 October 1876, headed "Dr. Arnott's Physics 7th Edition," plus 3 receipts for expenses related to the book's production. Various sizes. Creased, some dust-soiling and fraying, but overall very good. Autograph manuscript of a large portion of Taylor's contribution to the posthumous seventh edition of Neil Arnott's Elements of Physics, co-edited by Taylor and Scottish philosopher Alexander Bain (1818-1903). The manuscript consists of text sheets of Section IV on "Heat," taken from an earlier edition and heavily revised in Taylor's hand, plus numerous manuscript sheets containing Taylor's additions to the text. Also included are three receipts for expenses related to the book's production, and an itemized cost sheet in a secretarial hand listing the estimated and actual costs of the book's composition, stereotyping, corrections, illustrations, printing, paper and advertising. Arnott, a Scottish physician and inventor, is best known for his improvements to ventilation and heating; his Elements, first published in 1827, was a popular textbook on physical science that went through six editions during his lifetime. Arnott had been friends with both Bain and Taylor since the 1840s and named the two as co-executors in his will. Taylor is best known as the founder of forensic toxicology but was certainly well versed in other aspects of sciences, as he was responsible for preparing the Elements' sections on heat (offered here) and electricity. Bain, Autobiography, pp. 322-323. .

Description
1930. Garden City NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1930. Original light yellow wrappers lettered in green. First Edition of this short story, being the American copyright issue -- 75 copies printed and privately distributed in August 1930 in order to secure copyright protection in America. The main story is the voyage, generally reckoned to have taken place in or shortly after 60 AD, during which St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island of Malta, then called Melita -- the account of which, given in Acts 27-28, has been said to be the most vivid account of a voyage and shipwreck in the whole of Greek and Latin literature. In Kipling's story that voyage is described in the conversation of three reminiscing seamen whose meeting provides a typically Kiplingesque "frame" for the main story [kipling.org]. This tale then appeared in the September issue of London Magazine, and was subsequently collected in 1932 in LIMITS AND RENEWALS, the last collection published during Kipling's life. A fine copy. Richards A389; Stewart 592. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.
