Description
Paris: Roret, 1839. 3 folding engraved plates. Contemporary green sheep-backed marbled boards, edges sprinkled red. Some foxing, but a good copy in original condition. Only French edition of this scientific exposé of magic, illusion, and automata. The author, a Scottish scientist, asserts that governing bodies have long used “magic” to establish authority over an ignorant populace, and his book provides protective elucidation on their methods. He discusses the physiological mechanics of optical illusions, spectral visions made with lenses and mirrors, creating auditory illusions that harness vibrations in the air, automata employed by ancient rulers, fire control, and even alchemy. Throughout the text, Brewster provides anecdotal evidence for his scientific analyses. The folding plates feature 78 vignettes that illustrate the principles contained in the book. This book was published as part of a lengthy series of French encyclopedias and manuals called Manuels-Roret by Nicolas-Edme Roret (1797-1860). Price, Psychical Research 117; Clark, Conjuring 14.

Description
New York: G. W. Bromley & Company, 1934. Very Good. New York: G. W. Bromley & Company, 1934. First Edition, from an unknown number printed but with "No. 70" cut and pasted to front free endpaper. Oblong folio (30x43.5cm); original gray cloth stamped in red and black; [8]pp. index + 188 color plates with extensive pasted-in cancels, collated and complete. Boards soiled and edgeworn with minor fraying; binding sound; occasional spotting and chipping to edges, else a Very Good and sound copy. Incredibly detailed block by block map of Depression-era Manhattan, notable for the meticulous updates by hand to nearly every plate with paper cutouts (and adjacent glue smears) placed above the originals, presumably to account for the fast pace of change in the city's urban landscape. Bromley had last produced a Manhattan land book in 1930. Remarkable for its production, level of detail, and capturing New York in its skyscraper heyday.

Description
Venice: [Alexandrum da Bindonis], [1520]. Second Edition.. Later stiff vellum.. A very good copy; marginal staining to some pages (inoffensive); smudges on title page; loss of several letters on one page due to tear.. 8vo. A book of secrets containing an array of medical cures. It was written in the 13th century but not printed until 1519 and thereafter was always in print. The 1519 edition is almost unkown in collections. The 1520 edition, the only one seen by Ferguson, is offered here. He felt fortunate (see entry) to have located a copy for examination and inclusion in his collection. Eloy, Conring, and Portal all rate the book highly. Portal (who may be incorrect) identifies Varignana as a Jew who practised in Genoa. He is the only one to so identify Varignana. Durling # 2198 ; Ferguson, Secrets, II, p. 207 - ' ... of undoubted rarity. '

Near Fine
Description
New York: William Morrow, 2025. Reprint. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Lee, Alan. First printings of the illustrated editions of The Hobbit and all three volumes of The Lord of the Rings, and the last four volumes (Morgoth's Ring - Index), 2nd - 4th printings of all other volumes. Includes all five of publisher's slipcases. Third slipcase bruised on top and bottom fore edge with minor split to bottom seam, minor split to bottom seam of fourth slipcase (though no other damage evident, so it's uncertain how this occurred). The slipcases have served their purpose, though - all books and jackets are in fantastic condition. Bindings tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 2025 Hard Cover. The complete saga of The Lord of the Rings, from the beginnings of Middle-Earth in The Silmarillion, through The Hobbit and the three parts of LOTR itself, plus every volume of The History of Middle-Earth, including the Index volume first released with these illustrated editions. Originally published from 1984 through 1996, and based on Christopher Tolkien's arrangement and editing of his father's extensive notes, this is likely the most ambitious reference work related to a fictional world in the history of print. This illustrated edition incorporates color plates and jacket art by Alan Lee. Tolkien's world-building was a master class in both detail and scope, and these works help contextualize the novels that have become classics of epic fantasy. Includes: The Hobbit; The Fellowship of the Ring; The Two Towers; The Return of the King; The Silmarillion; Unfinished Tales; The Book of Lost Tales Part One; The Book of Lost Tales Part Two; The Lays of Beleriand; The Shaping of Middle-Earth: The Quenta, The Ambarkanta and The Annals; The Lost Road and Other Writings; The Return of the Shadow: The History of the Lord of the Rings, Part One; The Treason of Isengard: The History of the Lord of the Rings, Part Two; The War of the Ring: The History of the Lord of the Rings, Part Three; Sauron Defeated: The End of the Third Age, including The History of the Lord of the Rings, Part Four; Morgoth's Ring: The Later Silmarillion, Part One; The War of the Jewels: The Later Silmarillion, Part Two; The Peoples of Middle-Earth; Index.
