Description
1648. Large woodcut printer’s device on each title & numerous woodcuts & illus. and printed tables in the text. 470, [7] pp., one blank leaf; 217, [1] pp., two leaves of dedication. Two parts in one vol. Large 4to, cont. binding from the south of France of red morocco (rather browned throughout as always with this book due to the quality of the paper, some minor worming towards end touching a few letters & carefully repaired), arms in gilt on covers of François de Rignac (1580-1663; see below), roulette border in gilt round sides, spine gilt. Frankfurt: J.G. Schönwetter, 1648. First edition of this collection of writings on the famous new star of 1572-74 (first part) and the equally famous comet of 1577 (second part); this edition, containing two of Tycho’s most important works, is rare on the market. It was his observations of these two astronomical phenomena — here printed — that compelled Tycho to abandon the Aristotelian theory of the universe and replace it with his own geoheliocentric system. This was an enormously important step in the acceptance of the Copernican doctrine. Many of Tycho’s instruments — sextants, quadrants, and various armillae — are well-illustrated here. This copy belonged to François de Rignac (1580-1663), attorney general of the Cour des Aides de Montpellier and bears his arms on the red morocco covers (Olivier-Hermal-de Rotton, pl. 1902). The binding of this superb copy is typical of the workshops of the south of France, especially that of Corberan, the binder for Peiresc. Though François de Rignac married a certain Jeanne de Fabry in 1627, she was apparently not closely related to Nicolas Fabri de Peiresc, a native of Aix, even though this copy could imply family ties. In 1682, according to Léopold Delisle, Colbert received a gift of one hundred and four manuscripts of Mr. de Rignac, councilor to the Cour des Aides de Montpellier and heir to the books of François de Rignac. In their Histoire du Languedoc Vic and Vayssète relate that in 1677, Étienne Baluze had already discovered the library of the “late Mr. de Rignac.” It is most unusual to see this book is such a fine contemporary binding. In this copy, the two leaves with the dedication are bound, as is often the case, at the end of Part II (like the Harvard copy). Preserved in a box. ❧ Houzeau & Lancaster 2704. For de Rignac, see Guigard, II, p. 413.

Description
2 p.l., ii, 20 pp. 8vo (202 x 127 mm.), modern marbled boards, red morocco lettering-piece on spine. Paris: Pérignon & Chariot; Amsterdam: Coclers; Antwerp: Beckmans; Brussels: Marnef; Ghent: Spruyt; Manheim: Artaria; London: Wood Burn, 1816. A scarce auction catalogue issued by the expert Alexis Nicolas Pérignon (1785-1864), who presided over a number of important sales — Constantin, Denon, J.L. David — in the 1810s and 1820s. He was also appointed the commissaire-expert des Musées Royaux, a prestigious title once held by the leading dealer and taste-maker Jean Baptiste Pierre Lebrun (1748-1813). Dufresne, the consignor to this sale, was a wealthy stockbroker. This catalogue describes 65 lots, including paintings by Bega, N. Berghem, Brauwer, B. Breenbergh, Dou, Dujardin, Metsu, A. & I. van Ostade, Steen, Teniers, Ph. & P. Wouwerman, etc. Some of the entries have extensive notes, and measurements are provided for most pictures. A nice copy. Sporadic and inoffensive foxing, and the half-title is a bit soiled. With the engraved bookplate of the Parisian art dealer and collector of early art auction catalogues G[eorges] P[annier] (1853-1944), on the front paste-down, and stamps of the Bibliothèque Heim on half-title and title. ❧ Lugt 8847.

8vo. (4) 179, (1) ff., including author portrait and 18 half-page woodcuts. Bound in contemporary limp vellum with title inked on spine, later endpapers, leaf 103 with repaired marginal tear. Some worming and staining to binding, some spotting, occasional foxing; several early ownership inscriptions scored on title; generally very good.Scarce first complete edition (with 19 woodcuts) of the second printed work devoted to the customs of the American Indians illustrated from life. This edition is augmented with a section on the Canary Islands and an extra plate. Benzoni's is one of the earliest accounts of the European colonial establishment in America by a writer who was not Spanish, and the spirited woodcuts (all but one of which show Native Americans) were among the first to give Europeans images of Indians and their activities. Their ethnographic value has long been acknowledged, and they were the source for the De Bry engravings (see Item X).The historical and ethical value of the work is also considerable: "Along with Las Casas' Brevissima relación de la destruyción de las Indias, the Historia is considered one of the two foundation stones of the Black Legend of Spanish cruelty to the Indian."Benzoni (b. 1519), a native of Milan, came to the Caribbean as a young man in 1541 and visited the Greater Antilles, the Spanish Main, and Central America, thereafter sailing from Panama to Peru.*Adams B 688; Sabin 4791; Sturtevant, "First Visual Images of Native America," and Keen in First Images of America I, 417-54 & 108; Penrose, Travel and Discovery in the Renaissance, p. 299.

Description
Folio. Completed in manuscript, in all likelihood by Helen Carter, the composer's wife. With the composer's full signature at foot. No date, but ca. 1945. In addition to requesting basic information such as name, address, and nearest living relatives, the questionnaire asks about the composition itself. Interestingly, in response to the question regarding date of composition, Carter answers "Partly in 1938 and partly 1944." Grove states that the work dates from 1938 and is unpublished. Slightly worn and creased overall; creased at folds; small staple holes and two file holes to blank upper margin. "One of the most respected composers of the second half of the 20th century, [Carter] has blended the achievements of European modernism and American 'ultra-modernism' into a unique style of surging rhythmic vitality, intense dramatic contrast and innovative facture ... Although considered by many America's greatest composer after Copland's death, Carter remained a loner on the American musical scene, affiliated with no group or school and indifferent to the changing demands of fashion and the market place. He once commented that the most radical work an American composer could write would be one like Brahms's Fourth Symphony, which assumed the most highly developed musical culture in its listeners. By the time he entered his 90s, his inspiration undiminished, Carter had produced half a century of just such subversively refined masterpieces." David Schiff in Grove Music Online.

Description
San Jose, CA: The Rosicrucian Order, A.M.O.R.C., 1934. First Edition. Quarto, illustrated boards (hardcover), [72] pp. Good+, with wear to edges and spine. From Preliminary Explanation: The Book of Jasher is one of the long-lost, and long sought for, sacred books which should have been included among the other books of the Bible but which was not because the original manuscript could not be located. In addition to the two references to the Book of Jasher that will be found in the other books of the Bible there are historical references to this lost manuscript and it is only natural that in recent centuries a great many stories should have been invented purporting to tell how and why the Book of Jasher became lost, hidden, or suppressed. In order that some of the mystery regarding the Book of Jasher might be removed, and, furthermore, for the benefit of those students of the Bible who sincerely desire to read another record of the events that are presented in the Old Testament, we have thought it well to reporduce the Book of Jasher in its original text as given to the world by the man who claims to have found it and prserved it. In order that our reproduction of this rare book should be without error or change, we have resorted to the very elaborate, complicated, and costly method of photographing each and every page of the Book of Jasher as issued by Alcuin and reproduce it in special paper by the rotogravure process. This, therefore, gives us a truly photographic reproduction of each page of the original book by Alcuin. We feel sure, therefore, that our readers will enjoy these reproductions beginning with the original title page of the book and noting not only the interesting style of typography and arrangement of matter but the original and excellent language used by Alcuin. The pages as they appear in this book have not been reduced in size or altered in any manner, and only the cover of the book, the first title page, and this explanation are original with us. Attention is called to the many uniqe phrases found in the early chapters of the Book of Genesis in regard to the creation of the universe and of man and woman. It should be kept in mind that the original author of the Book of Jasher was born during the lifetime of Moses and lived in association and companionship with him. Therefore the first part of the book was written by this author from the records and traditions that had been preserved by his ancestors. The latter part of the book is based upon what he observed himself during his lifetime. consequently we have in the Book of Jasher a new witness ot many interesting events and a new presentation of ancient records with a more careful translation and interpretation of the matters which were held sacred by his ancestors. The original introduction and explanatory matter which precedes the text of the book should be carefully read in order that the importance of the book and its translation may be appreciated.
